92. 'Despite it all we Won' - Guy Benyovits
Nazim ,   Brussels, Belgium   (08.13.06)
If you are measuring victory on the basis of Israel having SPOKEN THE TRUTH and utterly ignoring the civilians killed on both sides of the conflict you are dead wrong. Honestly Israel has not achieved any of the objectives that it has stated at the beggining of the conflict. It said 'NO' to negociations with Hezbollah for a prisoner exchange; it set out to destroy Hezbollah in ONE week. And it has achieved none of those. I wonder how Guy translates the loss of more than a 100 Israeli soldiers at the hands of a 'RagTag' militia of 3000 in less than 30 days? The Israeli army invincibilty myth has been shatteed by a 'ragtag' militia speaks volumes for itself. And Hezbollah WILL eventually form part of the Lebanese Army and will be at the border. Israel can dream better dreams. Let there be peace in the Middle-East. Nazim
93. Victory
Aquila ,   Romania   (08.13.06)
Israel has clearly won the war through the way they managed the conflict (clearly superior to that of the Hezbollah), the number of military targets destroyed (again, superior) and the gains and losses after the war (Israel has proven to Hezbollah that any future attack will not be met with negociations and has destroyed many rocket launchers and bunkers of their enemy). I think sustaining the opposite is true is simply silly. In fact, I think discussing so much about the victory, when the situation is quite clear, is futile effort and a sign of the influence that the "I win" Nasrallah politics had on some of the readers. Strategic analysis of the war suffices to establish the victor.

required. Enslavement, are you for real. Go back and look at all the history in the region.. first the non acceptance of a bias division of land in 1948 and an arab attack. similar in 1967, when you lose a war of wars and you are the aggressor expect to lose lands.. research world war 2 you will see.. jordan and the palestinian people have a close relationship and there should be some mention of resettlement there as well at least from a historical pretext. Im not jewish and Im tired of hearing about occupied lands. That to me is a fallacy, both sides claim lands that to me are neither theirs. Thus, it makes it difficult to know who should own the land, but if I were a palestinian I would be much happier living in Israel owing to the economic situation.

country that respects human and civil rights, expect some turmoil and a potential change at the top. this kind of ineptness can not happen again. Israel has too much on the line for it to really lose a war.

Its scary to hear those words come from a fellow canadian. truly sad. where did you learn all these things from.
97. Who won?
Hilda ,   USA   (08.14.06)
Certainly not Israel. Not while there are still missiles flying over Haifa and Kiryat Shemona raining death and sestruction. Not while are still IDF men dying, not while Israel's kidnapped soldiers are not home with their loved ones. Not while the stinking UN sides with the terorists and allows them to rearm. Not while Nasralla and that nut in Iran still call for the end of the State of Israel and the death for Jews all over the world. Not while Condi Rice pushes Olmert the idiot to accept such a one sided cease fire.
98. IF THIS IS WINNING>WHAT IS LOSING
Henry Goldschmidt ,   Fort Lee NJ USA   (08.14.06)
The terrorists won the battle. Why fool yourself? For the first time israel has been beaten by the indecision of Olmert and his Quislings. SHAME ON THIS GOVERNMENT. AM YISRAEL CHAI
99. To # 44: nothing 'hysterical' but maybe too subtle for you..
Flavio ,   Sao Paulo, Brazil   (08.14.06)
...for I just wanted to show that Arabs are so intoxicated by their own government-controlled media and propaganda that they have to turn to Israeli media to get a realiable portrait of the facts - in other words, Arabs themselves don't trust their b.s.media, including Al Jazeera (with a 'z', not a 's' like you wrote). Israel is much, much more honest and transparent than Arav dictatorships, and communiqués blasting vitoty 'over Zionists' are clearly no to be taken seriously. As you see, plain facts of lie, nothing 'hysterical'. I hope you can understand the meaning of my previous post now; I haven't thought an explanation would be needed, but of course I was wrong...
100. Big Looser!!!
Austria   (08.14.06)
I cant believe that an educated and professional man like you are so ignorant that you cannot see the truth even if it bites you in your Ass!! If this a victory for Israel then I hate to see when you loose!!! You called yourself a winner when you bombed women and children and destroyed a country. Hitler would never do this. Am sure Hitler in Heaven now wishing that if he can come back coz he knew how evil the Jewish is. Israel actually need another Hitler coz you all didnt deserve to live with people with good hearts. The Jewish have no shame. You are proud to see other people sufferings and dying and homeless from your attacks. Fact is Israel and the rest of the Jews lost the war and if the Israel didnt behave you will get whip again by a stronger and better Hisbollah.

102. Who wan? an objective analysis
Robert Tilden ,   Sheridan Wyoming   (08.14.06)
Dont do a body count. We can compare winners and losers in other wars and see that some times the winners lose more soldiers while some times the losers do. in the American civil war as well as WWII the Russians + allies lost 10 to one to the Germans, did the Germans win? the North lost more battles then the south as well as lost more lives. The north wan. While it migh be 'unfair' to bring Lebanon to its feet from the air, I don't see the fools who claim Lebanon acturally wan because of this. Did the Japanese win WWII because it took not one but two nuclier bombs to get them to surrender? In a world with no UN, this war would have gone on for another month or two till Lebanon, like Japan would have jhad no choice but to do just as Israel tells it to do. And so, we are left with 1701. Since 2000, Hizbollah has been seen as the victor against Israel and as such carried 35 out of 128 seats in the Parlament. Should they keep that power, come next elections then I will have to agree that Israel lost. 1701 need not call for the disarming of Hizbollah, there is already a resolution for that, duplication means nothing here. Sadam Hussain had more than two resolutions against him and it mattered little. Will the UN act on its actions? Will the Lebanese people who don't give up and emigrate elsware keep on supporting Hizbollah. Those are the two tests that will deside if the Summer Vacation war of 2006 is an Israeli victory ala WWII USA vs Japan, or a stale mate like the Korean war, in which the mess is left over for another time. I fail to see how anyone can claim Hizbollah wan. The numbers do not support it, the devistation on the Lebanese does not support it. The almost non stop crying on the part of PM Siniora proves it. Wars are not wan on a Sympathy card. Israel is willing by all accounts to keep on at least the air strikes, which alone paralize the whole country of Lebanon. The country that Hizbollah ultimitly is duty bound to defend. For Israel to cut its losses is simple: not to use ground forces. Hizbollah has no such easy way out of facing losses. And one more thing. for over two weeks before July 12th there was a war in Gaza, it went on all this time, The Palestinians are clearly losing this war. The main reason for this is the loss of media coverage. When the London scare occured, Hizbollah had lost the media coverage, yes they would go back to it, but it would not have been the same. This is a largly unnoticed reason that Hizbollah was eager to get to a deal.
103. to Guy Benyovits
John ,   France   (08.14.06)
So you won the war?.. Pathetic, you remind me of the arab leaders back in the1967 when they kept claiming wining the war on Israel, at a time when Israel slashed them.. The war is far from ending.. so wake up and think peace.. real peace.. fair peace.. comprehensive peace!
104. Excuse me? you won the war?
KJ ,   London   (08.14.06)
Yes you won the war - Here is more truth for you: - You killed children in their sleep - You destroyed homes - You wrecked inncoent lives - You butchered a nation On that victory Congratulations and keep basking in the glory of your denial.
105. Guy Benyovits' "Despite it all, we won"
R. Vince ,   Ohio, USA   (08.14.06)
We wish in the states that what you are saying was true! Mind you, I am not Jewish, but read opinions in y-net. At no time did we (average non-Jew Joe's in the states) think Isreal was acting barbarically. Quite to the contrary in fact. However, with the help of my insane country, yours has signed on to an agreement which gives hezbollah exactly what they want -- a prisoner swap, which was why they did this, according to them, to begin with. Once again, bad behavior is rewarded and no civilized country seems to have the stomach to do what is necessary now.

Another victory like this one and there will be no more Israel. Think about it.
108. Nice try, but no cigar
Emma ,   New York   (08.14.06)
The article is a nice try at boosting morale and trying to keep the fact that Israel retreated and crumpled under world pressure at bay. The fact is, we did NOT win. We showed the vulnerability of the Middle East's most-feared army. Lives were lost, property was destroyed, families were ripped from their homes and routines. And for what? Why did so many have to lose their lives? What has been accomplished? The abducted soldiers remain in captivity, Hizbollah has gained in superiority, and all we are left with are bodies to bury, cities to rebuild, and further distrust in our government. Yes, the spirit of the Israelis during the conflict is commendable, kol hakavod. But to call this withdrawal anything but a shameful loss is not only counterfactual, it is outright reprehensible!
109. War Interrupted...#63 Right On
Rita ,   California, USA   (08.14.06)
No one can claim victory in a war that has simply been interrupted. As post #63 said, this ceasefire WILL NOT HOLD. Hezb'Allah has already said they refuse to disarm south of the Litani. In judging whose zoomin who, look at who was crying for a ceasefire from day one--hezb'allah. Nasrallah is in hiding, and Mr. Siniora is crying because he knows one wrong word against Syria or hezb'allah will send him to his maker (ala Mr. Hariri). The only thing going against Israel is her loss of spirit and resolve to do what has to be done.
110. simple analysis
Humanbeing ,   Beirut   (08.15.06)
hizbAllah is still able to hit rockets to north israel whenever they want, (eventhough the leb army and unifil will spread in the lebanese south) , hizbAllah will keep thier weapons, and olmert will make negotations for exhanging prisinors ( in the begining of war he refused the idea)....so just tell the public how did u win ? arab leaders are liers since they work for usa and "israel" but not hizbAllah and other islamic resistance...

0 of 3 Israeli soldiers captured have been returned more than "a few" tanks lost warship crippled several helicopters destroyed about 120 Israeli soldiers killed Hezbollah's rocket arsenal was never "seriously degraded" promise to destory Hezbollah in a week proved laughably wrong Israeli general relieved of command France now key player in Middle East Halutz sold his stocks when Hezbollah attacked Shebaa Farms now up for grabs Peretz calls for negotiations with Syria Poll shows majority of Israelis say war did not achieve goals Infighting among Israeli politcal and military leaders Nasrallah achieved legendary status a hero to Arabs No Israeli babies being named Ehud
112. To Esmail, Advocate of Genocide
Martin K ,   Washington   (08.15.06)
Esmail: You advocate genocide of the Jews. You are a terrorist supporter, if not worse. It is because of people like you that your country is isolated, your freedoms gone and that you are headed straight for the Middle Ages. Why do you hate Israel so? Because you envy its accomplishments? Its freedoms? Because of your Nazi-like anti-Semitism? I hope your hatred will gnaw at you like a cancer, as it is destroying your once-great civilization. Now, you are nothing but a barbarian advocating the destruction of a country that wants only to live in peace. Your pathology may also cause your country to suffer greatly. To hell with you.
113. we won
norman birnbaum ,   washington dc   (08.15.06)
A piece of adolescent boastfulness, totally lacking in grasp of the adversary as (as hard as it may be for the author to believe) also human, and--if an indication of the qualities of an ascending generation--a bad omen for Israel's future. It is the kind of thing one would expect from an intransigent defender of Israel safely installed in a Hillel chapter in a mid level US college....
114. To Alexander in Austin
Edwin Svigals ,   NYC USA   (08.16.06)
Time to talk peace? Have you been asleep these past decades? One can talk peace only to peopl who see peace as to their greater advantage...Hez is in perpetual jihad - they don't want any kind of peace - they perceive their advantage as killing Jews. What this war teaches is that we don't expect anything from the UN (already their ceasefire promises are being reneged), we dont give up one inch of territory (we need rocket-attack depth), and we shall crush the barbarians in a way that leaves them no hope ever of future success. So keep to yourself the smarmy comments about 'listening to wise voices from within'. you sound like Percy Dovetonsils...
115. So cheap
Paul ,   belgium   (08.16.06)
"We won because we're coming out of this war beaten, but on our feet. Lebanon will need long years to recover" if you call destroying Lebanon 's infrastructure a victory, i don't know what kind of people you're......

That's right! They are just big time losers that Nasrallah deludes his terrorists that they won because he is another arrogant sick minded criminal like Hitler.
117. If Israel Can Live This, It Will Be the Winner
Knave Dave ,   Honolulu, Hawaii, US   (09.04.06)
If Israel can consistently report its own actions, analyze its own actions and admit what is not working with absolute honesty, then it will wibm and this writer will be right that the other side lost because it believed its own lies. The Jews who wrote the Bible exemplified this. They analyzed their nation and reported the flaws they saw with honesty, but not out of self-hatred. That must be very rare in the writings of the ancient world, and may be why Jews are the only nation still alive from that ancient world. But it is a brutally difficult process. No one can see beyond their own blindness. They can only LISTEN to others tell them what they do not see. --David Haggith
