61. Does he know?
Lior ,   London   (11.23.06)
Does the dear rabbi realize that many of the rabbinical decisions in the past he is wont so much to quote were made by rabbis who were converts? A larger number than one would necessarily believe could be so... And many of the strictures for conversion were not in place then.... in fact, conversion to Judaism was much more in line with current non-Orthodox practice. So, where does that leave him, quoting the convert Akiva - standing on one converted foot to recite the whole Torah - "Do as you would have others do to you"? Wobbling no doubt...

What has conversion to do with your writing ? Try to stay on the subject . Answer : what do our "religious" [ the ultra orthodox not the kipa wearing ]brothers know of the secular ? You see , typical Jewish , answering to a question with another question .

I am suggesting that if he is really interested in making better the Israeli society than the real problem is somewhere else. It seems he does not understand what is the most accute problem of the Israeli society today. The real problem are the Israelis who do not care about anything having to do with spirituality, Judaism, moral values and 'midot'.

Generally spoken i do not respond to anonymous [ even some names are fancy ] If i understand you , non religious have no moral values , are corrupt and so on . Religious will cry that i'm spraying hate against them , no important . Does amoral conduct or corruption not occur in religious circles [ look at the rabbinical court of Haifa ] Are there no drugs ? Of course , it happens in all the segments of every society . Not only in Israel . What i think , religious , have to be 100 % OK . Not corrupt , etc....And sad to say , some are not a fine example of behaviour . I , by myself do not need the Tora [ nor police ] for not to defy law and rules . I have moral laws . That many Israelis are unaware of a basical knowledge of Judaism , is sad . Knowledge , in any fields , give you a moral wealth . You have to know your History , old and modern , you can be very proud of the Jewish contribution to the world [ not only the Tora ] And finally , you have not to be religious to try to make a better world . Not an easy task !
65. Rabbi Amar
Even Eser Garcia ,   Miami   (12.04.06)
Rabbi Amar, you have no idea on the damages and misery you are imposing on Orthodox Converts; Yes, the one converted under Halakha. It is hard to be recognized as Jews as it is now. By you distinguishing between Jews by matrilineal lineage and a converts in order to amend the Law of Return, you are imposing on Converts a new burden. Who is going to marry our children if they are not Jewish enough to make Aliya under the Law of Return?
66. converts in Israel
sara ,   new york city   (02.18.07)
I would go a step further than Rabbi Amar and accept NO conversions for citizenship. People must achieve citizenship through civil means and THEN apply for conversion if they still wish to. It is scandalous that citizenship in a country should be based on religious belief or ritual practice.
67. conversion hysteria
Yael Gefen ,   Petach Tikvah   (01.28.14)
As usual we seem to be unable to view this subject logically as Rabbi Amar does. There is no polemic in his position. He likely knows his bill will not be passed and is raising an important issue. Allowing one group to take charge of who can make aliyah and another to take charge of who can marry whom will cause a mess down the road. Why all the emotion?
