31. Red not allowed ... but in "Eishes Khayil"
Amy ,   off rt 40   (01.02.07)
the line "ki khol beyta lavush shanim" is sometimes translated "her entire household is clothed in scarlet wool"? (Full disclosure: Artscroll translation.) Scarlet is just another name for red. So what's the problem with red again? Am very frum, BTW.
32. Girl in picture
Deedee   (01.02.07)
looks dressed for the Jerusalem chareidim who don't care what Rav Eliashiv thinks...they seem to always know where to find her...
33. girl on the left looks hot :)
aj   (01.02.07)
34. Haredi dress code
Robin ,   USA   (01.02.07)
Who cares what the secular community thinks about the Haredi dress code . Are they asking you to dress that way . There is no reason that a secular newspaper should even be writing an article about this.At least the way the haredi community walk around dressed is mODEST and with SELF PRIDE . the Israeli secular population walk around dressed half naked looking like toal TRASH and with out a drop of DIGNITY! And why does Ynet keep using that outrageous picture of Rav Elyashuv he is the kindest man and every other picture of him in the world is of him smiling and portraying goodness and kindness it is unbelievable that ynet dragged out this picture to portray this giant otherwise ! An utter shame and disgrace.
35. hareidim hatemonger fools
eddie ,   london Uk   (01.02.07)
for manyyears, the haredi rabbis mocked the religious nationalists styyle of dress, saying their long skirts were too fashionable. now their haredi peversion has been paid back , where their own daughters are dressing in immoral mini skirts . so the rabbis are misleading peopel from one extreme to anohter, and causing hatred as a result of their own peversenes
36. The Jewish Mutaween
Paul ,   Austin USA   (01.02.07)
How retarded. Saudi Arabia, much?
37. Down the slippery slope to intolerance
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (01.02.07)
It's hardly a surprise that this latest dictum should come out of Bnai Brak. It's the poorest city in Israel according to government statistics, beating out number two Jerusalem, where we've also seen "modesty" campaigns. What do they have in common? A high proportion of ultra-Orthodox, large families, and low economic participation consistent with an ethos of self-isolation. Seeing themselves and their culture as under threat, and ever afraid of the temptations of sex, they put up one more barrier after another: television, the Internet, a college education, taking gainful employment or, heaven forfend, serving in the defense of their country! They add to sinat hinam by trying to gender segregate buses, beaches and sidewalks and obsessing about fashion. Is this really our tradition? Our texts speak openly of the beauty of of our matriarchs and of many of their successors- that they were "very beautiful" or of "beautiful form" -. That would hardly have been evident if they were wrapped in the shapeless garb promoted by the ultras. Note too that many aspects of "traditional" garb was either local custom or reflected restrictions imposed by Christian or Islamic authorities to reflect the subordinate status of the Jews. Is that really something we want to perpetuate?
38. Seeing RED!!! (and to # 12)
Helen ,   Cape Town, SA   (01.02.07)
Have you noticed for yourself how many times you used the "was"? Clearly, these rules were all 'man-made' based on the times of the day. Times have changed. Quite honestly, if Haredi men cannot control their own physical urges every time they see a woman dressed in red, then it is something that they have to address within themselves and not try to eradicate the concept of the colour red and women together! I mean really! On one hand, red is associated with royalty, but at the same time with prostitutes??? Where does that leave the rest of us??? The fact that this is even considered as a topic worth spending the slightest bit of time on in relation to the rabbi's, is a joke in itself - not to mention totally insulting to women!!!
39. # 7 - Halacha vs. Commentary
Helen ,   Cape Town, SA   (01.02.07)
This ruling is not original Halachah (Torah). It is pure commentary (and perhaps subsequent legislation) from the rabbi's of the day. The Talmudic law should be something vibrant and in touch with the times, although still keeping within the realms of the Torah. This 'red' ruling however, is just a totally misplaced initiative for waning influence.
40. Is there any value in forced 'modesty"?
Ibrahim ,   S. Arabia   (01.02.07)
If modesty does not come from the heart, it is totally useless. It is as if a policeman orders someone to make a charitable contribution, to avoid arrest: Worthless charity that can't fool God. I guess it's easier for chauvinistic males to blame and restrict women for their own moral looseness, instead of taking responsibility for what they feel and what they do. It's not exactly a great statement from the "religious" males to say "We can only be pure if we are not tempted by women."
41. Zoe # 11
charles ,   petach tikva   (01.02.07)
I'm wondering that no tb has called you a "self hating Jewish antisemite" . You have maybe a little bit exagerated in your wording , but it is very difficult or impossible not to react as you did . They are crying that seculars hate them . But they are masochist i think , by their behaviour they can only attract such , at least , not too friendly reactions . There is a difference with saddam hussein , they are still alive .
42. I'm wearing red right now!!
Chaya ,   Bat Yam, Israel   (01.02.07)
My husband loves me in red!! Red is the color of a rose! God created colors for us to enjoy - every one of them!
43. # 40
Helen ,   Cape Town, SA   (01.02.07)
Ibrahim - I couldn't agree with you more!! Thanks for that sentiment of yours...
44. Let them do whatever they want!!!
Gidon ,   california   (01.02.07)
45. Rahab and the scarlet cord
ami ,   usa   (01.03.07)
Rahab used the scarlet cord to protect Joshua and his men from the leaders of Jericho. What's with the Ultra orthodox Jewish men and the color red? They are just as bad as the Pharisees in New Testament, always nitpicking about everything, burden people with the traditions of men. I know for a fact that kabbalah used red cord to ward off evil eyes. This is a totally superstition - I refused to listen any of their talmuds - but to torah, the writings and psalms. If these modern day Pharisees are really bent on lock and load on women, what comes around will come around and bite their kosher butts!
46. To all complaing....
Herut Zion ,   UK   (01.03.07)
They are not telling YOU what to wear or not but to people in their community who share the same values. Instead of having a go at Jewish living as Jewish you should stop and think if you need to please the goyim or Hashem.
47. its all backwards
yoni ,   jerusalem   (01.03.07)
i dont kow if anyone noticed here but everyone who has written a talkback so far putting down the rabbis and chareidim is totally preverted in their comments and this is probably why they dotn see eye to eye with the rabbis. what everyone should remember here is that chareidim are trying their hardest to get away from the modern day hedonism and preversion of all morals. women who will stand up to wearing red and cant see why selling their bodies is wrong are in trouble. in general women wear less and more revealing clthing than men in order to show their bodies off. this is what we want to get away from. just because you dont have values and cant relate to our values doesnt mean you should put us down
48. #47
Joseph ,   NY, USA   (01.03.07)
Apparently , according to the article, those values also include burning down clothing stores and assaulting women with bleach. Dress yourselves the way you choose, but your values don't give you the right to assault people or committ arson.
49. Instead of being so critical of Jewish living like Jewish,
Herut Zion ,   UK   (01.03.07)
Instead of being so critical to Jewish living like Jewish and not like the Gentiles, you should all do teshuvah instead.
50. dear yoni
eddie ,   london UK   (01.03.07)
thanks for your statement - but as i tried to point out, the Rabbis are nto very rational, and as long as thier dati-leumi competitors women were wearing long floor length skirts, the haredim allowed shorter skirts, exposing more legs. hence the rabbis themselves are the biggest enemies of modesty, be it intellectual or physical
51. #9 Ode to Lady in Red
tma   (01.03.07)
Leonie, you are wasting your writing / poetic talents in ynet talkbacks! I hope you are doing something with your writing abilities.
52. #41
tma   (01.03.07)
I suspect is a member of the infamous neturei karta, for all his venom directed at the religious Jews.
53. Not only haredim
tma   (01.03.07)
My daughter learned in an ulpana and the girls were not allowed to wear red. So it's not only the haredim. Some national religious adopted this halacha as well. In one of my sons' high school yeshiva, the boys were told they can't wear red, as it's "immodest". Some of the boys were wondering why and asked their rabbi, why, since they're not girls! The prejdice towards red clothes must have some historical background most people forgot about and can't explain. European royalty wore red capes, but did the ancient Hebrews do so as well? If it's due to the attention drawn, well, this is true of many other colors as well, any bright color for that matter. I think it's silly in any event. People should be free to wear whatever color they wish, so long as skin is covered.
54. #9 Good on Ya, Mate (End)
Michael ,   Haifa   (01.03.07)
55. Charles
Diana S.   (01.03.07)
is being lumped together with and being labelled neturei karta!!! You've made my day, tma, great work. He truly deserves it. Lesson to be learned here, folks.
56. charidi lessons
charles ,   petach tikva   (01.03.07)
how to behave curse , to be loved by seculars . 1 ] throwing stones , many lecturers 2 ] separate sidewalks , resident of Beth Shemes 3] hurting women in buses 4] No red clothing by a great rabbi 5] disgusting insults , special guest lecturer , tma 6] Not human behaviour , same special guest lecturer tma this tma pretends to be a "father" , poor , poor childs .
57. dear tma
NC ,   Here   (01.03.07)
to most of the talk backistim/ot, your 'ulpana' daughter ( and our similar grandchildren in mamlachti dati, yeshivah tichon, and amit bar ilan schools) are all lumped together with chareidim and even neturei karta. Sit back and be amused at the 'open minded, tolerant' comments.
58. modest clothing
charles ,   petach tikva   (01.03.07)
In french there is a proverb : l'habit ne fait pas le moine . The robe do'nt make a monk . If people are wearing "modest'" clothing , are they modest ? or are they "moral" ?. You do not need to wear such "clothes" to be modest or behave morally . On the other side , many people want to wear other clothes , even that you can see very much of their body , if this is good for them , why not . They are certainly not less "moral or decent" , sometimes even much more .
59. No matter how loose or baggy the womens clothing becomes...
(01.03.07)
you will still be able to see a womens beautiful womanly curves! Now tell me Mr. Haredi man, how are you gonna cover-up her curves? Get real all of you, woman are beautiful human beings, the men need to take a cold shower and control themselves! We're here to stay boys!
60. Santa Claus on B.A. flights wore red
(01.03.07)
so chareidim 'saw red', ha ha. Viva El Al. A chareidi could have even been Santa. Off with the black, on with the red...and christmas pudding to you all...
