61. 55 - checkpoints are there because of security
NL ,   Israel   (02.22.07)
I'm sure the checkpoints are a hassle. Please note that they were established after the 2000 intifada and the subsequent massive rash of suicide bombings. THUS, the checkpoints are clearly there to stop terror (and terrorists concede that they hamper them). If the terror would stop, the checkpoints would disappear. This is an issue of security, not racism. Arab Israelis in Israel have the same rights as do other citizens. They have more rights and opportunities than Arabs in pretty much every other country in the Middle East.Yes, perhaps, in spirit, they are not implemented to their full potential, but that is the case in all nations (and with all minorites in all nations, for the most part). arabs receive leniency on many laws where Jews do not (illegal building, for example). They also receive a sort of affirmative action in order to combat some of the finanical inequality that exists. This is despite the fact that many of them speak out against the government and even against the state of Israel, conceptually. Perhaps some of the hard times they experience are experienced because they support terror emanating from the territories. Perhaps if they stopped thinking of themselves as Palestinians and started thinking of themselves as Israelis, they would find that their lot in life improved. Just look at the Druze if you don't believe me.
