There is nothing wrong with being attracted to someone your own shade or culture at all. Some are attracted to the same, some to opposite. But it is wrong if one finds fault because of it. Prejudice based on skin colour/ethnicity has no place in Judaism full stop. And to those who keep bashing Haredim, it is just as much a secular issue; maybe more. It was Ben Gurion who said that they needed their blacks too, when encouraging ME Jews to make aliyah. Israel should be more vigilant and speak out against this type of persecution.

Absolutely Mike, I see in our shul dozens of Ashkenazim who are much darker than my Sephardi husband and I know perfectly well that Indians etc are Caucasian/Aryan. I was simply making the point that most Ashkenazim believe this rubbish that they are all pale etc etc & therefore better. Jews are Jews & we need to live to a higher standard- that means being colour blind. This type of colour/ethnicity comparison is not acceptable in any civilised society & should be doubly unacceptable in the Jewish world.

I read through the talkbacks where everyone is either condeming or mocking the writer's point of view.I am shocked by the negative remarks made. Racism in Judaism is a serious issue. My own personal experiences of having people question my Jewishness due to the fact that from a demographical point of view I am in actuality a jew of color who is American born, and I was raised with Sephardic minhagim in an ashkenazi community that 20 years ago accused our family of not bein truly jewish for eating rice, etc during pesach...My parents spoke with the community's leaders...and they told my parents that yes they were aware of these minhagim...but they had never seen then...and therefore to be able to get their children married one day, they should change their minhagim to adjust to the community. My parents did just that. As an adult I have been able to "reclaim" my sefardic minhagim and teach my own children (who look white...with an ashkenazi last name) to be proud of their Jewishness no matter what! And I have introduced them to mizrachi/sefardic customs. I understand what this writer is complaining about. However, I think that many Jews regardless if they are in Israel or in any other Jewish community around the world, it does seem that the worst offenders are indeed the religious individuals. My personal belief is because those jews of European descendant do not fully comprehend that Jews are Jews by culture first and for most. NO matter where they have lived. Most Jews except the Europeans have made a very strict policy within their communities to not mix with non-Jews. The biggest offenders to that rule is the European Jews. The day that the European Jews can accept Judaism as it is: the Torah tha Moshe Rabainu gave us on Har Sinai, and they remember that the Torah is about dinim of ben adam l'chavaro as Hillel said, and that the rest is commentary .....klal yisrael will THEN be zoche to recieve Hashem's love for us and we will have geulah and a world peace. In the meantime, we neeed to continue to bring these issues to the Jewish public and have us look at ourselves as Jews and as the world will look at us and mirror our attempts at being better people. I agree with your views, as in India, its the same problem where people are differentiated/discriminated on the basis of their Religion/Caste/Colour etc., but the problem is that if you try to push this topic furhter or you try to go against such customs (obviously man made not created by God) you will lasheh back by the fundamentalists.
