First off, Slander is spoken falsehoods. The book doesn't indicate any falsehoods and is embracing strictly historical facts. Secondly, this isn't libel because the book is only documenting historical events. Polish law might as well say, historians publishing Polands actual History from 1933 to Present are punishable by a 3 year prison sentence

As I said, I agree the law is very bad, but it will probably be abolished. As for the book - the controversy is not about the facts, especially given that Gross does not use any new data, it's about the interpretation and the theory he builds on the pieces of facts and data that are available to him. And this may be disputable and quite false.

Don't judge a nation based on internet forums because somebody may do it to us and judge us according to Onet talkbacks ;) Maybe most intelligent people decide they have better things to do - I often ask myself whether this is not the sensible thing to do. Living in North America, I met a lot of Jewish people – as students, teachers, professors, bosses or coworkers and never had problems with any. In fact many were extremely nice/intelligent (though I must say the sample is biased in favor of very educated people and in any case I don’t really believed in judging the “nicety” of entire nations). Some seemed very sympathetic to Poland including one Jewish/Israeli professor very renowned in his field; those who had visited it said they liked it and those who seemed to hold a grudge against it expressed it in a much more civilized way in face to face interactions. I also remember one Israeli student who complained because his father was kicked out from Poland in the 50s but at the same time he was trying to get the Polish citizenship because he wanted to study in the EU... :)

First off, Gross is not a historian, but sociologist. Secondly the book is not presenting 'stricly historical facts'. It's presenting some facts, ignoring others and is NOT objective, as any historic document should be. In the subject I put the name of a book (not sure if that is a correct English translation from Polish "Umarly cmentarz"). Kakolewski produced a lot of evidence proving that the whole pogrom was organized by Communist Secret Police and NKWD. All the strings were pulled in Moscow. It is clear that the culprit was not a wilde mob who was not even allowed to get closer to the place where events took place. Secret police and soldiers attacked that building in Planty St. and started killing Jewish inhabitants (religious Jews only). The did not touch Jewish UB (secret services) members and Communist Party officials (Jews too) living in the same building. More over Communist police pulled a few people out of the crowd a few streets away from the events and and took them to the police station for interrogation. By using torture they made them admitt that they took part in the killing. A few days later they were sentenced to death (innocent people!) for alledged crime. There was only one low rank policeman who killed a women and her child from a train station as he misunderstood the orders. That is why Polish public is outraged as Gross based his story on those made by force and torture statements. Hence all the facts he produced are just not true. Not a single person who did take part in the killing (apart from the stupid policeman) was sentenced. All culprits vanished without a trace. Not to mention that Jewish party officals new about the plen and did nothing to stop it. Why the whole thing happened? There might have been a few reasons: Stalin wanted to show the West that it was wise to keep Soviet troops in Poland to prevent wild antisemitism. Westerners got fooled easily and evidence for that can be found on that forum even today. He wanted also to turn away the west from Katyn massacre and falisfied ballots in Poland. As similar pogroms took place in other countries occupied by Soviets it is also said that Stalin wanted to force Jews out of Europe to Palestine to undermine Britain in this part of the world and to help Jewish communist to build Israel. That is also linked to the possible Zionist involvement who wanted to get as many Jews as possible to Israel for every price. It is understandable that you would wish to defend your country and your people. For that, you can be excused. But to call Eve sick is going beyond what is acceptable. History is history.
