31. I just sent the Ministry of Transporation an e-mail!!
Chaya ,   Bat Yam, Israel   (07.02.08)
Protesting this action by the Hareidim.
32. How 'bout the men sit in the back
Wendy in Chicago   (07.02.08)
but face the back of the bus, thereby avoiding looking at the women in the front. This might make them carsick, but a poor, hot pregnant woman might get carsick sitting in the back, too. Just disgusting! Control yourselves!
33. Go talkbacks go! Ynet
Eddie ,   TA   (07.02.08)
has done it to you yet again, ha ha ha. Ho ho ho.
34. Privilege? Modesty?
Beila ,   BB   (07.02.08)
To give the horny men a chance to look at them, that's the REAL reason. So many of these girls are beautiful, but I hope they make awful faces at them and poke out their tongues on the way to the back. The holy goons won't see this, as they're not supposed to be looking at them ....are they, joke joke.
35. #20
Talula ,   Israel   (07.02.08)
They make constant demands on the secular populations. They threaten and they riot. They don't get anywhere because they are treated with the contempt they deserve. And why are you so bent out of shape that this is in the news? Do you prefer young girls to be bullied and pushed around and no-one hear about it? Wanna keep it under wraps like all the other disgusting deeds? You're pathetic.
36. woa
(07.02.08)
And you guys make fun of Iran?!
37. Why don't we just stop having female children
(07.02.08)
alltogether. It would make men's lives better.
38. Girls to the back of the bus
Roxy ,   Israel   (07.02.08)
Why not men to the back of the bus, they are stronger and are not pregnate, why should a pregnate woman have to shlep to the back of a bus to make ultra orthodox men more comfprtable(since they claim they can not control their urges)! Let the men sit in back and enter through the back door. Women are not second class citizens of this country and should not be treated as such! This is just as bad as the segregation in the Southern States of America before the Civil Rights movement!
39. Religous coercion again
Jewish grandmother ,   Israel   (07.02.08)
Brainwashed Haredi girls cant fight this kind of thing, the rest of us sane and religiously observant Jews can and should. Men as well as women. A bus is not a prayer room. End of argument.
40. Where is the Jewish Rosa Parks?
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (07.02.08)
41. The reason for the table pounding Shalom is because
Jacob Blues ,   New York City, USA   (07.02.08)
First, this is public transportation. This means that public funds are used to support the busses, not just those on the individual bus line. Second, there is no restriction on who can travel on public transportation and where one must stand. Third, the Charedim seem to manage just fine on public busses and subways in New York City without such mishugas. Fourth, the idea that one group deserves special treatment for their inability to live life with other human beings is discriminatory. If they choose to eliminate any contact with women, then they can isolate themselves rather than forcing their whims on the general populace.
42. #37 Sure, then let's see what plan you men come up with for
a continuence of ,   life on earth!!   (07.02.08)
43. Now why would I want to convert to Judism with rabbis like
this?No love of God ,   displayed here!!   (07.02.08)
44. THE REAL ISEUE OF WOMEN SITTING IN BACK OF BUS
Ephraim Rubinger ,   Miami, USA   (07.02.08)
Do these people not understand how odious this is? Did they ever hear of Blacks having to sit in the back of the bus in the USA.? Do they know that this ended here forty years ago? There is absolutely nothing in halacha demanding that women sit in the back of the bus. . This has nothing to do with religiion and has everything tto do with Misogyny! -
45. back
Ilana   (07.02.08)
So they cannot control their minds or bodies. No wonder the young boys are the ones to suffer. Disgusting.
46. 'Rabbis' dedicated to Tora-Bora (not Torah)
Jake   (07.02.08)
Every now and then, one hears about some smelly, frustrated members of clergy that molest children and treat females like beasts. Sadly, Judaism is not immune to this affliction. These 'Rabbis' have no need to stay in Israel, where they are in danger of being overwhelmed with inferiority complex by those upstart Israeli women. They will be received with open arms by the Taliban in the caves of Tora-Bora, where they can dream of a world where all women are hidden behind Burqas and kept locked up in the house, chained to the kitchen sink.
47. To #20 - Because..
Be ,   Pennsylvania USA   (07.02.08)
Yes, YNET tends to highlight the Charadi absurdities more than say other absurdities, but the truth lies in that these are supposedly our people, they are Jews and represent a part of our society and so when they act or speak what is basically evil, we all suffer. We need to point out and embarress and show when they step over the boundries of decency and respect to the rest of us. Can not ignore evil.. by ignoring we become accomplices.
48. Theocratic Israel (Selma Alabama USA 1950)
World Citizen ,   the world   (07.02.08)
What is wrong with the religious fanatics running your country? In the eyes of enlightened civilization Judaism is a very mysogenistic and bellicose religion. This is why I laugh when I hear Israelis claiming to be part of the wall of Western Civilization standing against the Moslem onslaught. Your country's religious leaders still think its the Bronze Age.
49. Subtext
MN ,   USA   (07.02.08)
What about the subtext of having the woman ride in the back like second class citizens. Why not have the MEN ride in the back! This way lies insanity! Next they will be carrying around portable mechitza's!
50. back of the bus
shawn ,   los angeles ca   (07.02.08)
if a women has to pay in the front (of the bus)and pass ALL those men who can't control themselves to get to the back of the bus ....this is better??? Isn't it easier for the men if she would just sit in the front and not have to pass them as down that narrow isle?. Maybe we can just throw them off the bus when they try and ride it!
51. charedim victims of villification???!!!
noa ,   jerusalem escapee   (07.02.08)
Where do I begin? First of all, why do you think the charedim will stop with Geula and Mea Shearim? They continue to spit, throw glue, and curse at women not conforming to their codes of modesty in other neighborhoods of the city, so why should I consider that their mandated brand of bigotry and hate should be limited to black hat hot-spots? Additionally, this is public transportation under discussion, if I'm not mistaken, meaning that these buses are paid for by me -- a secular, tank-top and trousers wearing, tax-paying, WORKING citizen. Oh, did I mention working and tax-paying? Now who has the right to sit wherever s/he pleases?
52. Matt P # 30
bar ,   Israel   (07.02.08)
So you want to make the "mea shearim" neighborhood only for them ? I'll agree , if they also stay out of other parts of Jerusalem . Let them stay there , and we'll stay out of their neighborhood . If you want rights , you have to know that there are also obligations .
53. Matt P # 30 , I agree
bar ,   Israel   (07.02.08)
We , seculars and normal religious Israelis will not go to mea shearim , but , let those mea shearim inhabitants also stay away from our neighborhoods . OK ?
54. Segragation on busses
Shosh ,   Yerushalayim   (07.02.08)
Rosa Parks ARISE!!!
55. 30 Actually it's MY bus too
religious jewess   (07.02.08)
Every day I swich buses in geula to reach work, and can't stand moving to the back of the bus
56. what is this insanity?!
(07.02.08)
Wouldn't it be better if there were separate buses? Wouldn't it be just a dream come true of all women were taken out of school and locked up in cellars?
57. Would they *dare* make such demands in New York or London?
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (07.02.08)
New York and London have substantial ultra-orthodox communities, and even they ride the public transit. If they're averse to sitting next to a woman, they stand. If they want to enforce segregation, they establish their own bus service. I see little difference between those on this "transportation committee" and those radical imams who describe women who don't "cover up" as "uncovered meat". And just as Muslims in the west are becoming more assertive as their numbers rise, so too in Israel are the "ultras" becoming more assertive as their own numbers rise.
58. Here we go again!
NYC Girl   (07.02.08)
The problem is that when these incidents are given media coverage it makes Israel look ridiculous in the eyes of the world. And it isn't just Ynet. Believe me, the likes of the BBC and CNN love to jump all over these kinds of stories, and if this nonsensical behavior on the part of the Haredim continues, perhaps the Israeli government should consider offering a package of incentives to encourage them to move en masse to Brooklyn.
59. If You're Not Orthodox, Mind Your own Business
Thomas   (07.02.08)
From what I've read in n the article, the rabbis ares not dictating to the entire state to follow it's rules but are asking the women in their own communities to ride in this manner. They have their own bus lines where this is practiced but they are merely asking women who opt to ride on the "non-kosher" bus lines to sit in the back as they would on the kosher ones. Their other solution is for the transporation ministry to only send those "kosher buses" through their communities to make matters easier. This isn't religious coercion at all.
60. #48, YOU certainly aren't part of civilization
Jake   (07.03.08)
and you have a lot more in common with these medieval ignorants than with the civilized world. At least these people are only the bosses of their insular little neighborhoods (not of Israel), whereas you have annointed yourself "World Citizen". What a pathetic gimmick.
