You are very mistaken. The rabbis are dictating to the female population that happens to be in 'their' neighborhoods. They are not 'asking,' but are instead mandating (and if I have to tell you about the social pressure on dissenters in these communities, I will be upset) second class citizenship. This doesn't make matters easier for women, but instead enforces a religious separate and unequal policy. If they are to have a separation, then men to the back....great solution.
62. Girls should sit in the FRONT on buses and the males in the
Rivkah   (07.03.08)
REAR of buses becauses most attacks on females on buses occur in the back of the bus where it is more difficult for the driver to see. For safety, I try to sit near the front of the bus as close to the driver as possible. Religion should want to protect females instead of exposing them to greater hazards.

64. What if woman is a seasick?
Michal ,   Jerusalem   (07.03.08)
Personally, I feel VERY sick driving on the back car seat or at the back of the bus. So, should I just die there???
65. Thomas
M ,   TLV   (07.03.08)
This is city, not 2 countries separated by the border. Some buses pass via charedim and normal areas. What the rabbies want this time is that the busses will be also kosher, meaning female got into the bus in non charedi area will have to move to back once bus enter charedi area... and we all know how charedi behave if female refuse. But, yes, this is not religious coercion - it have nothing to do with judaism, just small group of fanatics and preverts trying to get things work their way.
66. Back of the bus?
Shira ,   Maaleh Adumim   (07.03.08)
Let these parasites walk (eyes down, of course) if they have a problem.
67. back of the bus?
shira ,   maaleh Adumim   (07.03.08)
Let these parasites WALK (eyes cast down, of course), if proximity to women unleashes their "base" instincts. And haredi women-- wake up and smell the coffee: you are simply vessels for more and more kids and a free meal ticket to boot. Women who stay silent agree. I pity you.
68. #62
(07.03.08)
This is not about protection Rivkah, it’s about men being unable to control themselves apparently.
69. I agree with #13, just how one track minded are these haredi

ilan ,   ta   (07.04.08)
that they want girls in the back when homos like myself will be in the front with them.
71. They should stand up and say "Hell no we won't go,hell no we
won't go,hell no we ,   won't go"!!!!!!   (07.04.08)

bar ,   Israel   (07.04.08)
I hope that you can make your choice amongst nicer guys , or do you like men in black ?
73. Light train
Norman Green ,   Los Angeles, Calif   (07.08.08)
Won't somebody explain why they say they can't ride the trains?
74. What abt standing up for the elderly?
shira_z ,   j'slm, Israel   (07.13.08)
What abt standing up for the elderly? I can't stand seeing a full bus, with young ppl sitting and elderly standing. Its disgusting. Also, heres my (haredi) brother's solution - he has a regular hasaa, which takes him from his neighborhood to kollel. It ends up costing him abt the same as a bus would, and he avoids the whole issue. Therefore he risks neither giving offense nor being offended. PS lol @ 70
75. "the back of the bus"
tom ,   toronto, canada   (07.19.08)
times sure do change! it used to be that the schwarzes had to ride in the back of the bus, but now they ride in the front, and the girls ride in the back. but what hasn't changed is that it's the second-class citizens that are being told where they can and cannot sit. this has nothing to do with modesty, and everything to do with manipulation and power. and it is shameful to make second-class citizens of your own daughters, because some dirty old (or young) men can't be trusted to control their urges.
76. Girls in the back
Barbara Rubin ,   Lake worh fl, USA   (08.13.08)
As a woman, jew and american I find the concept of women sitting in the back of a bus both repulsive and undemocratic. As a jewish person I find it disgraceful. If the orthodox don"t want opposite sexes sitting together let them refrain from using public (and I stress the word public, transportation.
77. The time for rational discussion is soon passing
norm depalma ,   new york, usa   (08.29.08)
Every Rav who doesn't publicly decry such idiocy is complicit. And if the rabannim avoid their responsibilities, it is up to the rest of klal yisrael to do the right thing. Which is, sadly, to bash chareidi heads in --- like you bash the head of a man not willing to give his wife a get.
78. "Girls,go to the back"
chava ,   toronto,canada   (08.29.08)
Boys, go to the back. Men, go to the back. Boys and Men, if you do not like the walk to the back of the bus, with parcels and babies in hand, and being bounced around instead of sitting down in first available place, why would you subject girls and women to "go to the back"? Boys and Men, since you are holier than anyone else, you do the walk to the back.
79. Islaminsanity, Christinsanity, Judaeoinsanity!
Rob Fox ,   Edinburgh, UK   (09.08.08)
The resurgence of insane 'Abrahamic' religious misogyny isn't altogether surprising given the plain sense of the Bible (or the Koran). What is shameful, though, is the willingness of the non-fundamentalist majority to capitulate to one puerile religious demand after another in so many Western, secularized countries. Aren't these the guys who refuse to work for a living so they can spend all their time filling their heads with Bible-babble at the expense of the Israeli taxpayer?
80. Back of the bus
Miriam Wolf ,   Eldridge, California   (11.28.10)
As I understand it, Halachah calls for separation of women and men during prayer. Good call. We distract one another. But on a bus? Get a grip, Rabbis.
