do you know there are circumcised men who are NOT JEWISH? So, what is your point?
32. #24
Lisa   (07.07.09)
it apparently happened only last week that they found out- how could the young man know the rabbinate would make such a fuss? Or does this happen all the time? You mean to say when you apply to get married you have to be prepared for ALL eventual and hypothetical possibilities of refusal? Just in case? How about Jews who have lost all the papers during the Holocaust? Are they non-Jews now? They couldn't get married? How could they prove that they were Jews? How can their children and grand children proof they are Jews? There must be thousands and thousands of people in Israel and all over the world who do not have the proper credentials- what do they do? Wow, and now they let mentally challenged people get married.
33. the mother
Lisa   (07.07.09)
this really is interesting. It says in the article Roman's mother is Jewish- so what is the exact problem here? A few weeks ago there was a long discussion on Ynet about this: if the mother is Jewish then her children are Jewish too- so what is this about? Wouldn't the mother KNOW if her son is adopted? Why are they talking about the father here? Anybody here who can figure this out?
34. The Geniuses know better?
Paul ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.07.09)
It's inconceivably sad how automated the knee-jerked reactions are to this article. How can anyone sitting reading this article comprehend or pass judgment on the issue. But, that doesn't stop people from denigrating the Rabbi's in the tradition of some of the most hateful anti-Semites. What the hell is wrong with you people? This is what we end up with after 3 generations of a spiritually depraved post-Christian education.
35. Rabbinate Inc
J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (07.07.09)
The Rabbis are not Jews, they are Erev Rabanim, descendents of the rif raf in egypt.
36. adopted or not? rabbis dont believe in dna testing? or
lemmings hotline ,   sd usa   (07.07.09)
they love bad press. Or, they ordered a dna test and the couple refused.
37. #34 incredibly sad, Paul?
Ruth   (07.07.09)
what is incredibly sad here is not people's natural reaction to this increbly sad story: two young Jewish people want to get married by a Rabbi- and they are not allowed because someone found a 'fake' document. And don't blame the Christians for this incredibly sad stubborn and authoritarian system. This is Rabbis who are using their knowledge to a t- and by the way: the Rabbi Landau says: in light of this.... document- WE SUSPECT.... he might not be Jewish.... what is the couple supposed to do? Live in sin? get married in a civil ceremony and tell the Rabbi to go to hell? Paul, You make a suggestion that makes sense, is fair and human.
38. is there benefit in deserting Jewishness?
(07.07.09)
ask the rabbi, for he knew very will that to joint Jewishness again (born again Jew) has all the benefit for the rabbi.
39. time to get rid of the rabbis. end their monopoly

40. what's important is, is he the son of his mother?
hannah ,   tsfat   (07.07.09)
Whether his father is his biological father is really irrelevant in terms of his Jewishness. If his mother is his mother and his mother is Jewish, then he is Jewish. End of story. If he was born here, surely that can't be to difficult to find out? As other people have said, a simple blood test should prove the man or the rabbinut right. Sometimes people do get adopted and it's kept a secret from them, but its a rare thing these days.
41. 28 correction: "Cutting Remarks" is the name of the lecture
Rivkah   (07.07.09)
by Glenn McWilliams on circumcision.
42. 31 Lisa: Order the lecture and listen to it,"Cutting Remarks
Rivkah   (07.07.09)
" is the correct name by Glenn McWilliams. If the father is not circumcised before the conception of the child, the child is not under the covering of the blessings of Abraham in the Jewish bloodline. Many people are circumcised outside the Jewish bloodline and that is pleasing to the Lord and can indicate that the person is grafted onto the Jewish faith with Jewish roots, but it might not. The cutting of the foreskin of the penis is a warning to the seed passing through the penis at conception that if the commandments of God are not obeyed, the person will be cut off. God can graft people onto the Jewish faith, but if the person refuses circumcision, then the children conceived from seed passing through an uncircumcised penis are not under the covenant.

Lisa   (07.07.09)
Rabbi Landau said in response: "According to the information we have, the son does not belong to his father .." well? why is there even talk about his father's "Jewishness"?- makes me wonder where the fault is- Ynet? the rabbis? , the young man? Why would anybody want to cheat and pretend to be Jewish when he is not? What does he get out if it? A nice ceremony?
44. Mati 24 . Refusal of DNA test ?

46. Claiming Jewish Is Not Enough
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (07.07.09)
You have to prove it.
47. #42 Rivkah
Lisa   (07.07.09)
I appreciate your TB Rivkah- but to my mind being circumcised is NOT a guaranty that a man is Jewish- in the States they used to routinely circumcise boys- because it was 'fashionable and healthy' it had nothing to do with being Jewish- some parents did not even know about it until afterwards... besides, it does not answer the question why the rabbinate asked for the father's documentation - if it is through the mother the 'Jewishness' is inherited. There is no talk about the mother in this article- which makes it suspect. During the Nazi era they used to take the circumcision as proof that a man or a boy was Jewish- and for most it meant certain death. For the rabbinate it does not seem to make any difference one way or another.
48. where is the mother in all this?
Jo   (07.07.09)
Is that not the important one? If she is Jewish and this can be proved then he is Jewish regardless of the father. This story is suspicious, why is the father so important a figure in this when Jewish law does not require this to be so revelant.

Yerach ,   Jerusalem,Israel   (07.08.09)
An Arabist pro-Fatah./proHamas Jew hater like yourself is the last person that should pass judgement on the rabbanut!!!!! The rabbis have their standards & if people don't like it too bad as this is the traditions & laws passed down throughout the centuries.
50. Do you not have paternity tests in Yisroel yet?

52. # 47
Birdi ,   Israel   (07.08.09)
Lisa here in Israel when a Jewish couple apply to get married, they both have to produce documentation of both their parents Jewishness. Both the future bride & groom have to produce papers from their Rabbis. This is especially for new immigrants who wore born outside the State of Israel.

55. birth certificate
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.08.09)
If this was the not "kosher" [ forged ] document , what had the Rabbanut to do ? To say :OK we'll marry you ? No , there are rules , and they have to be observed .
56. Jimmy 50 . I don't find a country called "Yisroel" on any ma

57. circumsion...
janie ,   israel   (07.08.09)
has nothing to do with anything rivkah, you're an idiot. jews are jews if their mother's are jewish whether they are circumsized or not.
58. Let D.N.A. test prove the "rabbi" is wrong.
jason white ,   afula,israel   (07.08.09)
If the "rabbi" is wrong, then he should be flogged in public and banned from ever entering a shul or yeshiva. We need to close down the rabbanut and the min of interior. They cause more harm than good.
59. so what's the problem get married on civic
ghostq   (07.08.09)

60. Jewish mother
Jew ,   Israel   (07.08.09)
One needs only a Jewish mother to be Jewish. It's not important if the father is Jewish or not.
