31. Things are actually worse than they appear.
Harel ,   TA   (06.13.11)
It is quite clear he is Mossad agent who spied on behalf of Israel but moreover he tried to incite against the US pushing Israeli agenda and promoting Israel importance to the US. Reminds a bit of the Lvon affair in the 50's..
32. #28 So that means that every American
Ish Kabibble ,   Delancey   (06.13.11)
that spies for America should be treated the same way, convicted before trial There are are many American out there that are spying on behalf of the USA, you, of course wouldn't be among them, due to one simple factor, lack of guts
33. Ridiculous
Chatich   (06.13.11)
LMAO! What the hell would Israel hope to learn by spying on Egypt? Recipies for kufta and fattoush? Or maybe how to run (away) in bare feet?
34. srkahn44@gmail.com
Yaffah ,   Washington, DC   (06.13.11)
So many of these comments are disgusting. If you don't know Ilan, then you don't know the context. The only thing he may be guilty of is naiveté ..this is a brave and honest young man who is NOT a spy. Making ignorant and mean-spirited comments is unnecessary and cruel. don't jump to conclusions and do not believe the Egyptian press.
35. Alleged Israeli spy a US citizen
DAVID ,   Tel Aviv   (06.13.11)
Doesn't look like Mossad. 1.Why would the Mossad want to get rid of Mubarak when Mubarak was better for Israel than the current regime? 2. Why would the Mossad let them man stand out in a protest demonstration when the Egyption intelligence are obviously looking into who is there. 3.Why would he post the pictures on Facebook and expose himself? This really looks like a guy who likes trouble. First he wants to go to war and get injured second he does stupid things in Egypt. Now I feel sorry for him having to go through horrible interrogations.
36. Spend tourist $$$ in ISRAEL you fool.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (06.13.11)
37. Disappearance 2 or 3 years ago a former FBI agent in Iran
Stephen in New York   (06.13.11)
This story reminds me of the disappearance 2 or 3 years ago of a former FBI agent now in business who went to Iran to investigate something for a client and disappeared. Jewish, by the way. Every now and then you hear something in the media, but it’s just another black hole. I always wonder why a Jewish, former FBI agent thought that he could safely visit Iraq.
38. Egypt as a tourist destination should be forbidden.
Rivkah   (06.13.11)
It is too dangerous with the Muslim Brotherhood taking over the country.
39. US citizen? then swap with Shiekh Omar
observer ,   Egypt   (06.13.11)
40. Amir's mother says; my son is not guilty
observer ,   Egypt   (06.13.11)
41. I Hate To Say It, BUT:
David H ,   Marietta, USA   (06.13.11)
What kind of a) IDIOT, b) Jew, c) American goes to Egypt these days? To see the Pyramids? Take in a Nile cruise? Get raped by a mob in the street (women only), or thrown into jail with big Mohammed for being a spy? The guy is either a total moron or a spy. Potentially both. Obama will take care of him, I'm sure.
42. US passport........never leave home without it
Cameron ,   USA   (06.13.11)
43. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT?????
Mark from Georgia ,   USA   (06.14.11)
What do you expect from country that has been killing Christians like it's going out of style. While watching the news today they showed some of the recent attacks since the so called freedom protests. They've killed literally dozens of Christians, raping the women, yet we don't hear about it. I happened to be watching the Glenn Beck show today, a show I rarely see. I was surprised at how many attacks, killings and rapes had been going on in Egypt. So why would falsely accusing a Jewish guy of spying be so surprising. As I said the "freedom" protests have had zero effect. Egypt is still a military dictatorship. They have no tolerance toward anybody who isn't a Muslim. Blowing up two churches, suicide bombings of Christians and on and on.
44. On law school assignment
Eliana ,   Haifa, Israel   (06.14.11)
The article states clearly that he was sent to Egypt on assignment for law school by Emory University. He was sent to Egypt because he can speak Arabic. Instead of posting such negative comments why not try rereading the article in its entirety before making fools of yourselves. If he was sent by a US University as a requirement for graduation then the US should 100% be required to secure his release. Just because he gained dual Israeli citizenship later in life does not mean he has disavowed his loyalty to the United States. Egypt is constantly sprouting paranoid propaganda against Israel and anyone who actually buys into it should have their head examined immediately. My prayers are with Ilan and his family and I hope that he will be returned to you as quickly as possible.
45. #42 Cameron - Fat lot of good it did
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (06.14.11)
for those Three American's that were arrested by Iran because they were supposed to have crossed the border Two are still in jail, one is out on bail, sort of sounds like a poem
46. re: american Garfel in egypt
joel ,   usa   (06.14.11)
is an american tourist/student considered now in egypt-MB controlled government a spy, such as Garfel? maybe egypt-MB needed bigger "aid" from pres obama? or we'll just let them "suck" iran;s oil and stop the US aid?
47. on #20
joel ,   usa   (06.14.11)
you need to remember that muslim arabs don't respect agreements or treaty, that's "comic" to them, so next time your defense must be ready in any moment with them? these guys don't even trust their own shadows?
48. As a Jew and a US Servicemember
Marine ,   Chicago, USA   (06.14.11)
I suggest we stop calling him a "US citizen" and expecting the US to come in and defend him. He chose to serve in a foreign army, at a time when the country he was living in (USA) was at war in two conflicts. He didn't bother to defend the US, why should the US step in to defend him. Let Israel do it. He chose to fight for Israel's freedom, let Israel fight for his freedom.
49. Spying fpr America
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (06.14.11)
Does anyone out there think that America is pristine when it comes to spying ? If so, you're delusional
50. #28 When the KKK rules the US then you can have your way
Ilan ,   Ariel   (06.14.11)
Until then even inbred bigots like you are entitled to US consular services.
51. #48 silly logic
Tahl   (06.14.11)
Using your logic, one would infer that in order to enjoy the benefits on an American citizenship (including the US doing the most to get you out of trouble abroad), one must not only be an American citizen, but also serve in the US Armed Forces. Clearly this idea is silly and ludicrous, as most Americans do not serve. The fact Garpel served in the IDF makes no difference, and does not rescind his US citizenship. Furthermore serving in the army of a friendly country is not against US law. Garpel is no different than any other American who chose to go to college instead of joining the Armed Forces.
52. Mossad and sharks
Ian ,   Israel   (06.14.11)
I'm just wondering when the next Mossad shark is going to attack tourists in Sharem.
53. Have a problem, sol: blame Israel
Egyptian girl ,   Egypt   (06.14.11)
even we, Egyptians, don't buy that stupid lie the supreme council is trying to make, I am not saying Israel is the city of angels, but when we blame everything on Israel, we are having some serious problem, I just hope the majority of Egyptians will be smart this time and refuse to believe that nonsense.
54. #48 Marine...... Well said.
Marco ,   Spain   (06.14.11)
55. Other revolutions
Moshe ,   Netanya   (06.14.11)
Look, Russian spring in 1917 was made by 2 Jews, Lenin and Trotzky, and one Georgian. Russians loved their Tzar but Lenin send several Poles to kill the whole Tzar's family. In 1930s, one Jew almost became an Imperor of China. Before that, he was the leader of the first putch in Germany in 1922. I bet this guy wanted to be the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Look, a Jew Shlomsky is a good frien of Hizbulah. Is Ahmenajad is partly a Jew? Or is he too agly?
56. Joining IDF he gave up US citizenship and rights.
naro ,   nyv   (06.14.11)
57. No surprise
Ben ,   Free world   (06.14.11)
It should be no surprise that an Israeli or an American was demonstrating for the human rights of people. This is what free people do. He should be thanked by the new Egyptian leadership for standing with them. Instead they choose to play the blame the Jew game.
58. #56 naro - Not quite true, not true at all
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (06.14.11)
Check the facts before you sound off. American's joined the Canadian & British Armies in BOTH WORLD WARS and still retained their citizenship Lafayette Escadrille (France), American's were quite prominently represented in that too American's (Flying Tigers) in Chinese Air force, WW2 Israel had quite a few foreign volunteers during it’s War of Independence, many of them American’s I served in the IDF and still have my rights and citizenship and VA services when I need them Almost forgot to mention, I also served in U.S.Army Combat Engineers Next time, before you let loose, it would help if you did a bit of research first
59. #48 Marine - Did it ever occur to you
BEN JABO ,   ISRAEL   (06.14.11)
that IF hw was spying, he was doing it on behalf of the USA ? which just happens to have a lot of it's own spies roaming around seekng information & whatever, quite a few of whom have been caught already
60. Well said.....Marine 48
Marco ,   Spain   (06.14.11)
Joining the military forces of a US best ally is an American interest. The guy is still an American citizen. His arrest was because of him being Jewish and Arabs will potentially do it to you too. Receiving accolades for your opinion from Antisemites doesn't bode well for your opinion.
