J.K. ,   Brooklyn USA   (06.17.12)
I often vonder, who made the right decision in spain ?.the Jews who decided to convert and stay,or the Jews who decided to remain Jews and leave, and settled in Grecce, only 6500 of their descendants survived, out of 77000 Jews living in Grecce in 1939,the Germans killed more than 70,000 of Greek Jews, the Greek Jews were taken in cramped cattle trains in the hot summer of August to the death camps,Greek Jews had it harder than Ashkenazy Jews because they didn't understand German, when faith and live collide what is the intelligent thing to do ?.the Rebbe of Klausenburg (Transilvania) in 44 was oferred to save his wife and 7 children, but they have to pose as christians, the rebbe refused and his entire family was killed by the Germans, did the Rebbe ever regret his decision ?.

Imagine,A Hasidic woman in poland 1939-45, is able to have a conversation with God,she tells God,i know i have no chance to survive, but i can hand over my young children to my christian neighbors, the children will be saved, but will be raised as christians, what shell i do ?.what do you thing, what would God advise the poor woman ?.
69. Ora , there are many descendants
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.18.12)
of the Spanish Jews . They left Spain , and settled in different countries , Turkey , Holland to name only two . Some Polish Jews can also be descendants of the Spanish ones . My family came , more than 20 generations ago , to Poland from Turkey . There is a possibility that they too came from Spain . So , if not the Shoa , there would have been many more Judaism from Spain left .
70. JK 64 , Not only in Greece
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.18.12)
They settled in Turkey and Holland too . The Turkish ruler even send a sarcastic "thank you" to the Spanish king . He knew very well that Jews bring prosperity to his country . In Holland they developped a flourishing community .
71. 68 J.K.That s not the same as ...

converting herself,in that case she would give the message to her children, converting is ok. I think most children were saved after the war from catholic families and stayed at least Jewish ,if not religious.
72. 69 Charles,you are right...

i was not clear, i meant from the maranes

for practical reasons that hasidic woman couldn't convert, because of her heavy yidish eccent, even the cross on her chest wouldn't have saved her, after the war, our good friend pius the 12th ordered Kardinal Rancoly (later Pope John the 23rd) not to return the Jewish children hidden in monasteries during the war to their families,or to the Jewish community,Kardinal Rancoly defied the Pope and did return the children, but the hundreds of children taken in by families, very few were returned, the case of Enka Beckman in Holland, her parents were religious Jews, the woman who has hiden her refused to give her back to her aunt, when the court ruled against her,she vent into hiding with the child, vhen Enka turned 18 she converted, and received the inheritance, left by her parents,in France there was the case of the Fenaly Brothers, after a long struggle the court ordered the return of the children to their aunt, the children settled in Israel, the majority of children hidden by families, grow up as christians and married christians.

Many of the Marranos , also named "new Christians" or conversos , also emigrated to Italy where they could openly return to their Jewish roots . At least in some places . Did you hear about the "serajevo Haggadah" ? Was an Haggadah designed in Spain in the second half of the 14th century . Made also the journey to Italy , and then to Yougoslavia . Was sold in Serajevo [ from there the name ] to the local museum . It was a magnificent work , and i bought a facsimile of it in Brussels for the ridiculus low price of 10 Euro , 4 or 5 years ago . I knew what it was of course .

76. 75 Charles That s exactly what..

i wanted to ask.Do you remember how many Mtre Speyer Z"L got out of Christian families. One case got famous. I heard a lot of stories like that.

made some profit out of your great knowledge.
79. Ora 78 . I knew what the Serajevo Hagaddah was
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.19.12)
But nothing about the money value . This was told me later when i showed it to friends . Google it , if you have'nt seen a sample yet . You will discover some pages , the history of this unique book . And that was my "profit" : to own something beautyfull , with a history and of course , part of OUR History .
80. Ora , there were many cases of course
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.19.12)
But , can't you understand that families who received a baby , toke care for it during some years , want to hold this little child they see as their own one ? How would you feel in such a case ? And what about the little child who has to abandon people whom he knows as his parents ? . In our birth country there were lists of children given to non Jews by the Jewish defense comite . It's a very difficult problem , for both sides . I'm not defending those people ,, it's not their child , but try to understand them . The Finaly brothers were hidden in catholic institutions . After the war they wanted to hold them , send them to a cloister in Spain , were finally a higher ranked clergy ordered them to return them to their family . They were reunited with a aunt [ i think ] in Israel , and finished studies at the univs here . One a doctor , the second an engineer , if my memory is ok . A film was made of their story .
81. 79 80 Charles The Sarajevo Hagada..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (06.19.12)
is worth seeing again and again, and it s story is breathtaking, Did you never think of making a video out of it and giving a lecture .It might be a big success. You could give many lectures with all the knowledge you have.
82. Ora , You see why it's not the money side ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.19.12)
As it is a Sepharadi Haggadah , no "chad Gaddya" [ impossible because this was added later by Ashkenazim ] Ends of course with "next year in Yeroushalaim" . THe Story is the same as all the Haggadoth : freedom and end of slavery for the Jewish people . No sane person will deny that it happened . This Liberation is , i think , one of the reasons why many seculars hold a Seder . I was walking in Brussels , a little rain began , and i entered a big second hand bookstore , you never know .....And i found it quasi immediately , a lucky day ... I'm not interested in giving lectures . You see , people tell something but when you ask their source , they disappear [ this JK # 73 ] He's not the only one ....

Majority of those hidden children assimilated into polish society, otherwise you would have heard of a mass Aliyah by those who discovered their Jewish birth.Of course after the expulsion from spain the Jews settled all over the world, wherever they were allowed in,Morocco, the Balkans,Turkey, the Land of Israel,(Yosef Karo) Recife Brazil, new Amsterdam, liberal Holland,it was said, the more money one had,the further away from spain he vent,i just picked Greek Jews as an example for the decision their ancestors made 450 years before, the same can be said about the conversos who settled in Holland in the 17th century.

reason YNET did not publish my post,i tried again today, you have to understand,my means are limited,i can't force YNET to publish what they don't want to publish, maybe the topic is not politically correct.
85. JK . what you assume has NO basis . !
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.19.12)
How many were hidden in non Jewish families ?, how many were returned ? . That's what i want to know . I also have post not published , i copy them , and then , as you have already seen by me , they appear with a Try # 2 or 3 .

The title you give Israel doesn't matter. What matters is that all citizens have equal legal rights and equal responsibility. The must be only One Law in the Land, and that must reflect eternal Torah values as much as modern jurisprudence.

Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (06.19.12)
In history there have been Catholic nations such as Spain, Italy, Ireland, Poland at different times. Spain even executed non-Catholics. Before the Reformation Catholics saw themselves as one nation, such as the Holy Roman Empire. There are many Muslim nations that believe in one universal Muslim caliphate. Many nations such as England have their own national churches such as the C of E.
