Hello readers of all views and attitudes While serving in IDF I had the opportunity to meet many people with varied backgrounds and affiliations. As a civilian, I hear many predictions about the future demographic makeup of our Jewish State, Israel. Ma HaKesher? What is the link, the connection? Many expostulate a grim future in the 20s or 30s of the current century. In their nightmare, the Jewish Haredim will have an elective plurality sufficient to demand or command the Defense portfolio. This dramatic phenomenon is not remote. Unless dogs are given the right to vote at the canine age of 7, the “Secular” population will proportionately shrink. National Religious and Charedi families are blessed with quantities of quality offspring, b’li ayin hara. Our secular brothers seek balance: either one father, one mother, one child and one pet, or alternatively, one mother, one father, one son, one daughter and then one or two pets. Neither of these generalizations are absolute. The Arab voters and leaders have much more in common with the religious populace than with the secular community. The Arabs do not officially embrace single sex marriages that some secular parties promote and promise. On the other hand, they likely appreciate neighbors who reject the authority of the Zionist entity and resolutely observe personal modesty of attire and commercial stimuli in public. In soldering a coalition, Arab MKs might easily be persuaded to join an Eastern oriented Shas led government which proposes to feed all poor children, Moslem, Jewish and Christian, in Israel. One problem which might traumatize the country and perhaps foster anarchy or civil dissonance is that secular high school graduates will refuse to serve in an IDF whose civilian chairperson, Minister of Defense, never served in uniform because she or he was studying Torah. We have to have an army. The responsible leaders of the religious institutions do not want to rely solely on the study of Torah and the recitation of Tehillim as an alternative to a strong, dependable and well-trained IDF, in tandem with religious devotions. There will be a need for an all, or majority, observant army, navy and air force. With this in mind, it would be wise for the secular establishment to provide massive funding and training to a completely Torah-atmosphere army wherein there are NO females, glatt kosher food, complete Shabbat observance according to halacha and reasonable periods each day for Torah diligence and lectures. All this, just in case the Haredim do achieve sufficient electoral strength to form a cabinet and government. In the event of war, Heaven forbid, these Haredi soldiers would be expected to join in the military effort to both repel and defeat the enemy in the same admirable fashion that our Hesder soldiers have consistently done for almost a Jubilee, or more. Do not tell the Haredim to leave. They will not. You might wish to leave when they become the Government. I hope they will not tell you to leave.
