The guy is right. How can an Arab fights and kills his brother Arab for an occupying power. The same happened in World War Two when the British enlisted Indians and other occupied nationals to fight and die for them.

But there is already a voluntary national service programme in place, where Arabs can do service as firefighters, paramedics, etc. Not military, but civilian services that benefit the country. Israel has the right to ask you to serve it in exchange for what it does for you.

There is a constant and appropriate demand from the Arab sector for equal rights in Israel. However, equal rights imply equal responsibilities. In reading this piece by Muhammad Halaila, it is quite clear that he does not agree. His piece here demonstrates a strong antipathy to the "Zionist" state - a state from which he has obviously derived significant benefit. His excuse is quite fatuous in light of the number of Arab's in armies that are occupying other Arabs - an issue that Mr. Halaila, as the voice of Israel Arabs, has no problem with. And even if I accept his argument that Arabs should not be required to bear arms against other Arabs, I don't see how doing other forms of national service - working in social agencies, hospitals, schools etc. - would lead to army service.

While pretty much all over the Arab/Muslim world (Syria, Libya, Iraq, Bahrain, Lebanon, Pakistan, Afganistan, Sudan, and so on) people are slaughtering each other and I don't see them bitching about military service, on the contrary they will gleefully take up weapons so they can take part on the bloodshed. Here the hatred of the state of Israel is what drives them, they won't do anything that might pertain to help Israel even it it amounts to losing their country...And it's their country, whether they like or not, and they are going to Palestine, not being expelled , they are going to abide by the law willingly or forcefully, one law for everyone.

Rights come with responsibilities. If you cannot protect the nation(please, arabs kill each other every day in the thousands) then you can do national service. Help in hospitals, help in darecare for elderly, plant trees, clean, etc. If you cannot contribute like everyone else then you do not deserve the extra rights given by the state, like welfare, infrastructure upgrade. Is that inequality? Yes, but inequity comes in responsibilities as well as rights. Why have one but not the other? Unacceptable. Should it continue then you're just not a part of the state and a transfer should be considered, not just for social and political reasons, but because this, in part, also affirms your poverty and the drag on the economy. You separate yourselves as well and become a state in a state, as you say, you're part of someone else's nation. A transfer for these reasons would be even more justifiable than the Greece-Turkey forced transfer of 1929, in which 2 million Greeks and turks were forcefully moved, to prevent a civil war.

The fact that the killers and the victims may both be Arabs means nothing to either of them. That is equally the case for Muslims who are not Arabs. I understand that you live where you live and you have a right to live where you live. But if you want to have the benefits of citizenship -- what you may call "equal rights" -- you have to bear the responsibilities of citizenship. Otherwise, there is no good reason why you, while being allowed to live where you live, should not be denied social security benefits, health insurance and access to courts. You really should take your fellow citizens' offer while they are still generous enough to provide national service as an alternative to the draft. They are showing you more consideration than I would be inclined to grant.

Israeli Arabs should be required to serve in the IDF, but they should not be required to serve in units that police the territories. They could serve in recon units protecting ALL Israelis from foreign threats, and they would be highly valuable as ambassadors to Arab countries.
