62. Thank you Rabbi Amar.
Gabe ,   Canada   (07.12.12)
You are credited with the creation of a million secular. The devil must be laughing.
63. to #26, where is it written?
tom   (07.12.12)
in the Torah that I have learned, de'orayta, it is a mitzvah to earn a living, and to defend eretz yisrael from attack. in fact, not working 6 days a week is hillul shabbat. and making a living from Torah is forbidden, with very few exceptions (yeshiva bochers didn't make the list). as for joining the army, the 3 exemptions, house, wife, and vineyard, also don't include Torah study, probably because, a) you are supposed to make time for that during the regular day, and b) most people are not great scholars. moshe rabbeinu himself joined the battle against amalek. never mind that he was a great scholar. and never mind that he was over 80 years old. the (real) Torah teaches us that Bnei Yisrael couldn't defeat amalek unless moshe raised his hand to join in the fight. do these bochers really think they are more precious than moshe rabbeinu?!
64. a small lesson of the shoah...
tom ,   toronto, canada   (07.12.12)
for those who argue that Torah is enough to protect israel, i can only quote a prophet of our age: "you can get a lot further with a smile and a gun, than with just a smile". the nazis didn't spare women, or children, or Torah scholars. and neither would the arabs, if it wasn't for zahal. it is incumbent upon all jews to learn whatever we can from the shaoh, if for no other reason, than out if gratitude for having been spared.
65. The real evil is his cowardice...
Jake Stone ,   USA   (07.12.12)
...disguised by his pious religiosity!
66. A Case for the Devil?!
Taz Man ,   USA   (07.12.12)
There is a God...and, their is a Devil. All those not saved by the blood of Jesus Christ WILL go to Hell--period!!! One's denial of Satan will be their downfall, becauise that's what he wants people to think, so he can operate with immunity. The serpert (a form taken by Satan) in the garden of Eden was Satan. He has always been around; but, Jesus Christ will ultimately fix that. The way to salvation is John 3:16; choose wisely...your eternal soul depends on it. God bless, Israel and His Jerusalem!
67. To Amar & all his self-righteous cohorts
NO to Amar & Co.   (07.12.12)
Since you pretend to know Torah and Talmud...please refer to the pasouk "ushmartem meod ett nafshotech'em"! = You shall preciously guard your physical bodies against predations & damages! What does that mean in concrete terms? It means that US (all of us Jews) MUST guard/insure against any harm to our physical bodies. Why? To insure our survival and that of our Nation! How is that accomplished? Health care of course...that's regarding any individual's personal health & welfare. However the welfare of the Nation, that of our Medinah, Medinat Yisrael, that welfare is by/through the military or national services of its able-bodied citizens. Who are these individuals capable of assuring the welfare of our Medinah and its citizens...nobody else but our armed forces members and our national service workers. Our soldiers and National Service personnel are the ones who permit the plethora of useless BATLANIM to sit on their asses and pretend to be of some use to the welfare of Israel's citizenry. The problem with these WORTHLESS batlanim is that they are trying to shove their self-serving lies down the throat of the average citizen. Enough of these self-serving superstitious lies...the Torah was clear as to who should serve the Nation in time of need...it was EVERYONE who was able-bodied, Lamdanim and Yeshiva boys were NOT exempted then! Why now??? Certainly NO exemptions are called for or even permissible when our enemies are ready to pounce at Israel and kill every Jew alive here and in the Galut.
68. Religious Beliefs . . .
SD Charger ,   San Diego   (07.12.12)
Everyone has their own beliefs on what is righteous and what is not. The Levites were set apart to "do G-d's work" and were not sent into battle, according to Judaism. This was before The Messiah was sent to the earth. The Messiah, Jesus, is our High Priest and he replaced the sacrifice, according to Christianity. Everyone in Israel should serve their time in the IDF, according to most Israeli's. I agree with them. Free ride is over.
69.  The stormy comments here about ...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.12.12)
the Rabbi s words, makes a earthquake feel like a jacuzi.
70. #32 wrong
ahavasyisrael ,   israel   (07.12.12)
Rav Chaim Kanievsky was drafted into the army in 1948 and he spent the entire time LEARNING TORAH.. so chances are it's because of him being drafted and others like him that the war was won in 1948!
71. Maybe God was angry about Temple Mount desecration
Meir ,   Jerusalem   (07.12.12)
The Chief Rabbi was silent as the Temple Mount was desecrated last week, maybe the quake was Gods protest over his silence???
72. Joshua, you are lost in translation..

Jewish Haredim and Israeli Christians and muslims (they are call israeli -arabs) need to get their lazy asses in the army instead of pretending to be Israelis lol ! and you dont pretend to be a philosopher :-) have a nice day

1000 Tsunamis
77. Bunch of idiots
Gill ,   Montreal   (07.12.12)
This is a form of speech used very frequently among religious Jews. מעשה שטן. "Devils work". Does not mean that he refers to Satan himself. He is definitely one of the most intelligent religious leaders we've ever had. But but I guess any Time you ignoramuses get a chance to talk down but religious your jump on it.
78. Rabi's Amar comments
Amos Nir ,   Vancouver Canada   (07.12.12)
1). The children of Isrrael fought to take Israel. 2). The judges are heroes because they fought so is king David the Maccabim and even Rabi akiva sent his pupils to fight agaist the romans. 3). The haredim have to go to the army and the army will decide if they are needed if not they should do national servise .
79. #44 - You are mistaken
D. R. C. ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.12.12)
The original agreement that Ben Gurion made was to exempt 400 Yeshiva students from being drafted. It was NOT in the Declaration of Independence, and therefore cannot be considered as having been built "into the State's foundation". In 1963 Ben Gurion realized his mistake about this and wrote a letter to then PM Levi Eshkol saying that it was time to "revisit the question of men in yeshivas, if they actually do need to be exempt from their army obligation". He sited that these students were unruly and committing criminal acts, and as well that their numbers were multiplying to unreasonable amounts to continue the arrangement. Bibi better understand that if something isn't done soon, he will be voted OUT of office at the next election - and this is one thing he CAN do.
80. 76 Charles, aren t you exagerating...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.12.12)
a little bit the Rabbi s power?
81. Put torah in frame of life
Dan ,   KS   (07.12.12)
Torah study without knowing the way people live and the framework of life outside, the students will only know what they learn from torah study. Did Rash'i and the Rambam only know to study the Torah? How can a person become a leader(Rabbi) without knowing how many of the people live their lives? These students need a few years to learn - and reject - the live style of non-charidim.
82. Clarification
Beezelbub   (07.12.12)
As CEO of Satanic Enterprises Inc, I categorically affirm we do not do contracts that penny ante. It conflicts with our corporate image and we did not submit a bid on the haredi draft project, though invited to do so. Allegedly the contract was awarded to Samael/Lilith. Unsubstantiated rumor is that they are allegedly divorcing, so whether this contract proceeds or not is anyone's guess.
83. Unfortunately.
Gabe ,   Canada   (07.12.12)
Fancy clothing with fancy headgear never fails to affect the mind.
84. Age of Enlightmt. SKIPPED the shtetl
roxanne ,   Haifa   (07.12.12)

85. Respect for Rabbi Amar
Alan-Merida ,   Mérida, México   (07.12.12)
Past experience should caution all to beware hostile, supposed reliable reports regarding statements by R. Amar, R. Ovadiah Yosef, and other Sephardic rabbinical leaders. Typically, the reports inflame rather than inform. And the comment section of Ynet is heavily weighted down thereafter with fools rushing in to claim the Rabbis are ignorant of Judaism. R. Amar said nothing to indicate that Satan is an independent agent. Yes, Christianity and Islam generally hold the devil to be an independent agent. Judaism, back to the Tanach, views Satan as under GOD, but serving as a force -- or even a being -- as an adversary to mankind. I have much respect for Rabbis Amar and, for that matter, Ovadiah Yosef, though I agree with most commentators that the two rabbis are fundamentally in error in their stands against the military draft.
86. #85
Sailor ,   USA   (07.13.12)
Assuming Rabbi Amer's statement was quoted correctly, "The earthquake that hit Israel on Monday was cause by more than a mere geological reason – or so Chief Sephardic Rabbi Shlomo Amar believes," I would question his critical judgment. This is a man who has followers, who will not use their own critical judgment and common sense. He has a responsibility, and he is not fulfilling it.
87. Legal issues
Joseph ,   London England   (07.13.12)
When the first 'modern' Zionists arrived in Ottoman Palestine, the Haredi 'Old Yishuv' was here to greet them. When the Brits took over Palestine, they appointed Rav Kook as the first British chief rabbi of Palestine, but he himself recognised the authority of Rav Pesach Frank of the Eida Haredit and they worked together. When the state was formed David Ben-Gurion enshrined the rights of the haredim in the status quo agreement which is part of Israel's unwritten constitution. Any varying of the terms must be agreed by both sides. There should also be new elections to see if there is a mandate to draft all Arabs and Haredim. Rushing into such a cataclysmic change would be the Devil's work.
88. What the Devil?
Joe ,   Baltimore, USA   (07.13.12)
What's in a translation? In Jewish tradition we believe that the greater the forces of sanctity, the greater the equal and opposite forces of impurity. Satan is a Hebrew word describing the forces of evil that assail the world. In modern terms Rav Amar is saying the forces of insanity are trying to lead the govt into a head-on confrontation with Israeli Arabs and Haredim -- and secular draft dodgers -- for no genuine reason. The fall out will be harmful and the loony Left media will have a field day with Israel arresting Arab, Haredim, seculars etc. There must be an election and a temporary law until the issue is settled.
