The only reason people criticize this as a 'near fatal blow to the peace process' is because the Palestinians have maintained this unreasonable demand for East Jerusalem as their capital. This is despite the fact that they keep on launching terror attacks, have a warring government, and keep on losing battles against Israel. If they dropped this demand (which they never can) they would be more easily able to negotiate (assuming they wanted to). They keep on holding on to this demand, rejecting peace proposals, and in the end they will get nothing.
