I'm a Londoner, born & bred. I now live in Israel. When the initiative to create a mayor for London (town - as against the City of London - that institution is hundreds of years old & has had some excellent office-holders) was mooted, I voted against it from the start. It was obvious that a) it wasn't necessary and b)there were no candidates who were on a par with mayors such as Guiliani or Kollek. The camps in Gaza were set up by your loving brothers, the Egyptians; attempts by Israel after 1967 to rehouse the inhabitants of camps (who incidentally are not a majority of the arabs living in Gaza) were met by howls of wrath from the Arab nations & then by their supporters (who rely on their oil). It's their political weapon which they are more than reluctant to lose. Compared with the poor in Africa (not just Zimbabwe, Sudan) and the occupied/suppressed in Tibet, the arabs in Gaza have never had it so good. Linda, You forgot to add that the "palestinian" arabs (wherever they come from) are a special case [or maybe a basket case). Whereas all other refugees are dealt with reasonably well by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission fro Refugees), the arab "refugees" have their own special UN organisation UNWRA. Unlike the UNHCR which works within accepted norms to reduce the number of refugees, UNWRA works to build up the refugees. Back in 1948 they started with about 400K and now claim to be 3 or 4 million. This is one of the greatest corruptions in modern times; these people never die - but when someone is born to a refugee or marries a refugee then they get added to the swelling numbers.
