Only 2 mosques were torched and not by rioters. This a real intifada and not riots. Islam is obviously the problem. I grew up in a city in which we had important communities of poor immigrants from Portugal or Spain. We never had any problem with them even if they were facing the same difficulties that Muslims immigrants. Inasmuch, the children of these immigrants were not among the rioters even if lots of them arrived in France 30 years ago with Muslims.

Noach Klieger's first premise--that an "intifada" is a Muslim revolt--is simply incorrect. The word "intifada" has no specific Islamic connotation. It means "sloughing off," and simply refers to Israeli occupation. (Though, yes, Palestinian Islamists have attempted to "Islamicize" the second intifada. It's nice to see Noach Klieger is in agreement with the Islamists here.) Secondly, for the sake of argument, say the revolts in France are an "intifada." How many of the suburban youth were killed by French forces? The two who were accidentally electrocuted at the beginning of the riots; one other death was reported, which I believe was at the hand of rioters; and that is all. Compare that with the response of the IDF, in which there were massive Palestinian casualties in Oct. 2000, before the armed Palestinian militias took over and the suicide bombing wave began. The French police have a reputation for being nasty, but compared to the IDF response in the first intifada and the beginning of the second intifada, they were benign. And Sarkozy's "scum" comments don't quite match Rabin's promise to "break their bones" during the first intifada. So, Noach Klieger, do you really want to stick with the "intifada" analogy?
