I think a name cahnge is very inappropriate. Since the camp has historical significance it should carry its orginal name. Yes, the poles were victoms of the Nazis. No one will dispute that. But the Poles, like many other groups were willing collaborators in carrying out the Nazi Final Solution. No matter how much a people are suffering, they can aways be counted on to victimize the Jews!

i'm a polish jew living in spain, but part of my family is just polish catholic, and my grandfather was in a german concentration camp as a pole. nobody wants to deny polish antisemitism, but auschwitz, where some else of my relatives died, was a german invent, set up and run by germans. So, it hurts to read some really ignorant people, also jews, mainly from the U.S. who speak about poles and nazis as if they were exactly the same thing. Everybody has to assume his own guilts, but not guilts of other people. There's no comaprison between the shoah and what the poles suffered, but we should remember that three milions polish catholcs died during the war, mainly in terror actions carried out but the occupation forces, shot dead or in concentration camps. Speaking about polish concentration camps hurts the memory of these people and, after all, should hurt our jewish memory too.

It's complicated, I know, but nothing you've written justifies the proposed name change. I am an American Jew and I never forget all the people in WWII, including others who did not die in battle. Poland was a victim of nazi Germany. Thousands upon thousands of polish Jews and and anyone who seemed Jewish were murdered on the spot or sent to Auschwitz and Birkenau. Also the resistance and the handicapped or disabled. Of course there were collaborators in Poland but there were collaborators in germany and in the death camps.

Poland is one of the few countries in Eastern Europe which STILL hasn't returned private Jewish properties to Jews which were confiscated by the Nazis and nationalized by the Polish government after WW2! These properties are worth billions of dollars. There can be NO normalization in Polish-Jewish relations before these properties are returned to Holocaust survivors and their offspring. The Poles shouldn't rob the Jewish people -- they did enough by cooperating with the Nazis in WW2.

“Auschwitz Concentration Camp” To the “Former Nazi German Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau,” Everyone knows that the concentratoin camps were Nazi Concentration Camps. This doesnt really change anything. It doesnt change the fact that there is a village right next to the death camp, or that the Nazis chose to put it in poland because the polish people would not be as repulsed by it as the Germans. I have no problem with the name change at all, it is simply more discriptive.

I wasn't around, but my Jewish American grandparents were. Both sides of my Jewish American family came to America in the 1800's. Anyway, those eligible to fight before the USA even entered WWII joined and those eligible to fight after the USA had entered (i.e. after Pearl Harbor) ran to join the allies in order to help.
