Hitchiking has been popular in Israel since its beginning. The fact is Palesitnians won't let the Israelis live in peace. It's not the fault of the girls who are young and naive. B/c of Israel's vicious neighbors Israeli youngsters are not allowed to act like young people and have to grow up before their time. Look at the poor kids in Sderot. The Israelis elected Kadima, it is obvious they had no intention to stop the terrorism.
