How kind of you to write such wonderful things. You and Mrs goldwater-Amayreh don't invent things - you suppress historical truths. We are not actually debating who invented racism - we discussing the fact that jewish residents of Jerusalem are trying to prevent people of a different ethnicity buying property. Are you not capable of sticking to the point or is your hatred of Arabs blinding you? It must be galling for you to write and read only the language of the "British who invented racism". Is your Hebrew not good enough?

34. #14, Rustum, History isnt lies. You may not like, but facts
David ,   Boston, USA   (07.06.06)
I dont understand why you say history is a lie? Thats basically why there is no peace in the middle east, because the Arab world refuses to acknowledge factual history and Eurabia appeases it. Opinions are OK. Everyone has one. But history isnt a lie. Its the killing of truth by you and anyone else who refuses to acknowledge history that is preventing peace. You dont have to have the same opinions as Gabrielle, me, or anyone else, but dont you dear call factual history lies.

YOU KNOW VERY WELL THAT FOR GENERATIONS, THE JEWS WERE NOT ALLOWED BY THE ARABS INTO THEIR HOLY TEMPLE MOUNT AND OTHER HOLY PLACES IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY! ISRAEL RESPECTS ALL RELIGIONS. EVERYONE IS ALLOWED TO WORSHIP WITH THE UTMOST RESPECT. THE JEWS ARE NOT WANTED IN THE ARAB TOWNS AND VILLAGES NEITHER! THE PROBLEM IS THAT HAMAS, ALONG WITH MOST PALESTINIANS, CLAIMS THAT THE JEWS HAVE NO CLAIM AT ALL TO THE LAND AND WANT THE JEWS THROWN OUT OF THEIR HOMELAND. I AM SURE THAT YOU ARE AWARE OF THIS FACT, SO PLEASE, SPARE ME...
36. The haredim didn't want non religious jews also!

HOW REFRESHING TO READ YOUR OPINION. YOU UNDERSTAND THINGS AS THEY ARE AND YOU SEE BOTH SIDES OF THE ISSUE. WHO WOULD NOT BE NERVOUS. THE ARABS DO WANT TO KILL THE JEWS AND ARE TRYING TO DO SO ON A DAILY BASIS. HOW IS ONE SUPPOSED TO KNOW IF THEIR NEIGHBOUR IS ONE OF THE BAD ONES OR NOT? PEOPLE ARE SCARED AND WRIGHTFULLY SO. IN OTHER COUNTRIES PEOPLE DON'T WANT BLACKS, TURKS,CHINESE ETC. IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS. I AM NOT JUSTIFYING THAT, BUT IN ISRAEL, IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT THING. IT IS WAR, AND WHEN IT'S WAR, WHO WANTS THEIR POTENTIAL ENEMY TO BE THEIR NEIGHBOR?

In Hardei neighbourhoods anyone who buys an apartment must sign a document in which he promises to sell, if he sells his apartment, only to religious Jews. From personal experience, Ashkenazi Haredim are the most racist people in Israel, closely followed by secular ones.

I am not comparing Israeli society to that of the rest of the Middle East. You are correct in that analysis of lack of freedom of speech etc amongst her neighbours. However, freedom to choose where to live is also a tenet of democracy that must be adhered to. You can't compare Israel to her neighbours, she is unique. She is to be a beacon to her neighbours on how democracy in the region is to function, and these events only hurt her image both in the region and abroad. This is why there is a necessity for ISrael to have a Constitution. Israel is one of the only 'democracies' not to have one. As for the issue in Toronto, being Israeli there is a quiet segragation here in the city. It has started to come to light, but it does exist. The UJA in Toronto is a very strong supporter of Israel and Jewish Israelis living in Israel, but not of Israelis living in their own city. There is hardly any assistance given to immigrants to Canada. With Toronto being the second largest Israeli city outside of Israel, there should be more recognition.

"It must be galling for you to write and read only the language..... How do you know that English is not my language? Not only the Jews know their history, so here you are assuming again, Why are you writing in English, and in the Forum of an Israeli Newspaper? It's you that's not sticking to the point here, is your hatred of the Jews so strong that is is blinding you? You were altering Ms. Goldwater's name in order to insult her and at the end of your letter, I,m not sure, but this could have been a curse, I could be wrong. So hush up "rustum" there is no love in your heart for the Jews and the Land of Israel.

Eric, what you have not addressed is the inherent racism of the people who refuse to have Arabs living in their neighbourhood. You too probably live in a nice Araber-rein neighbourhood - and yet fail to notice that it is the mirror image of teh Judenrein territories which certain nations tried to create in Europe. That you do not learn from you own history - that racial discrimination in any form whatsoever is to be condemned, is a sad indictment of your standpoint. I can only say, I hope that one day soon the reparations paid to the uprooted Palestinians will mean that you too will have lots of lovely Palestinian neighbours and that you will have to learn respect and co-existence. Their is love in my heart for all, actually, for Jews, for Moslems, for Christians. There is no discrimination in my heart - so that's another one of your unfounded suppositions. As for my attitude towards Mrs Goldwater - her posts are full of the most vile, nasty rabid sort of racism which we all thought died out in 1945. Sadly not. However, I console myself that not even Israel generally accepts the sort of hard-headed, sneering, humiliating racist comments which she writes with great regularity from her safe haven in Geneva. My suspicion is that she is on the Hamas payroll, as no self-respecting Jew with a shred of humanity would write as she does. her latest beautiful effort is to tell teh father of the kidnapped soldier that he is a coward who should return to France. She's such a charitable soul. Not.

50. THE ARABS ARE ONLY MOVING BACK TO THEIR ORIGINAL NEIGHBORHOO
Ryan ,   Chicago, IL,USA   (07.06.06)
To all of you ignorant people out there, Arabs were KICKED OUT of their neighborhoods in 1948 and 1967. So what they are doing now is called a "comeback", which is a right of return of each single one of them that was kicked out. Jews who do not accept arabs going back to their home are racist, intolerant people who really do not deserve to live. Israel claims to be a democracy, but what kind of demoracy is based on racism and occupation. A failed democracy and an absolutely fake one! Wake up people and look up the facts on history.
51. W. Nablus is the place for them
Steven ,   San Francisco   (07.06.06)
If Jew's can't live in Nablus then Arabs should not be welcomed in Jerusalem. Every effort should be made to prevent them from moving to W. Jerusalem as well as encouraging them to leave Jerusalem altogether.

Linda Rivera ,   New York   (07.06.06)
THE SELF DESTRUCT DOUBLE STANDARD by Yoram Ettinger, January 20, 2006 Illegal Arab construction has become a norm, led by the Palestinian Authority (many PA officials reside in illegal homes), bankrolled by Saudi petrodollars and observed by the wide-closed eyes of Israel. Illegal construction has become an effective means to challenge Jewish sovereignty over Jerusalem, to undermine major infrastructure and housing projects in the Negev and Galilee, to limit the freedom/security of Jewish movement along major transportation arteries, to facilitate terrorism and to exacerbate crime. Over 1,000 illegal houses are built annually – by Jerusalem Arabs – since 1997. Only 30-40 are demolished by the authorities. About 10,000 illegal houses are built, annually, by "Green Line" Arabs in the Galilee, Negev, "Triangle", Lod and Ramleh. About 100 are demolished. Since 1967, there has been more Arab residential (largely illegal) construction in Jerusalem than Jewish construction in the capital of the Jewish State. But, Israel is enforcing the law in an iron-fist manner when it comes to a few scores of Jewish houses throughout Judea & Samaria and Hebron (built on a Jewish-registered property, which was ravaged by Arabs in 1929). Legal and governance impotence have characterized Israel's battle against illegal Arab construction, which threatens Israel's sovereignty and the rule of law in Jerusalem and all over the country. Palestinian documents, found at the PLO's "Orient House", highlight illegal construction as a key instrument in the campaign to erode the Jewish character of Jerusalem. According to the documents, the Palestinian Authority (PA) has enticed illegal construction in Jerusalem's Arab neighborhoods of Shoafat, Beit Haninah and A-Zaim, in order to prevent continuity between the Jewish neighborhoods of French Hill and Pisgat Ze'ev, and to avert the unification of Jerusalem and Ma'aleh Adoumim. Illegal construction is raging along Highway 443, the critical road from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, with the aim to transform it into an Arab road, threatening the security of Jewish transportation. While a 1999 Palestinian document anticipated that Israel was determined "to demolish 400-500 illegal houses in Beit Haninah and Shoafat", a 2000 document notified the PA that "no need to worry", since Israel would only demolish a few houses, and illegal construction could proceed with full speed ahead. For instance, illegal construction in the Jerusalem Arab neighborhood of Silwan has been a platform for intensified terrorism and felony. Forging real estate titles has proliferated in the Arab sector, robbing state-owned land as well as privately owned Arab land, fueling extortion, protection, gang-wars and the importation of illegal Arab residents from Hebron and other towns to Jerusalem – a fertile ground for terrorism.
54. Either you want to divide Jerusalem or you don't...
Deb ,   Negev   (07.06.06)
Either you want a divided Jerusalem (Jews on one side, Arabs on the other) or you don't. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If it's OK for Jews to live in Silwan, Muslim Quarter, etc., it should be OK for Arabs to live in Jaffa St or French Hill. The govt/city hall won't give building permits for the suburbs of East Jerusalem, so where do you expect young families to live (no, outside the wall, separated from extended family members, isn't the answer)? By the way, I once lived in French Hill for a couple of years. There have always been Arabs living on Haetzel St in the low rise buildings (that were theirs before 67, I guess). The flats owned by the university are across the road from houses already occupied by Arabs, so what's the big deal? I also lived in Tel Aviv for a while where my neighbours were Arabs from Jaffa. They were by far the nicest neighbours in the building.

56. Well, Jews can't live in Arab neighbourhoods either!!!
Ari   (07.06.06)
Jews are pulled out of Gaza just for being Jewish; Jews who want to live in East Jerusalem have to put up with huge efforts against them by Arabs; Arabs who sell houses to Jews in Arab localities are subject to death threats and often actually murdered... WHY DOES NO ONE SPEAK UP FOR THEM?!

Mary ,   Canada   (07.06.06)
I believe that Daniel is actually saying that it is much better that Israel does not intend to make the same mistake as Holland. Perhaps if you were to reread his statement you would see his use of sarcasm to relate a rather serious situation which has occurred in Holland. Some statistics indicate that within the next 10 years, the majority of people living within the major cities of Holland will be Islamic. I read in #1 that he was saying better to not just leave Jerusalem.
