Can you imagine the head of surgery excusing a collegue who was drunk during an operation by proclaiming that it's OK, a lot of surgeons are doing the same thing. Or the head of the American Bar Association excusing a lawyer attempting to bribe a juror by saying it's OK, a lot of lawyers do it. After all, there is commercial pressure. It's not surprising that the NYT employs Erlanger because he shares their historic philosophy and agenda. As another responder reported, the NYT deliberately withheld or minimized information about the Holocaust. The self-hating Jewish owners of the Times, the infamous Sulzbergers, didn't want their paper to be known as a Jewish paper so they closed their hearts to the millions of European Jews who were being slaughtered by the nazis. They were and remain creatures without a soul or conscience. Several years ago, they even admitted that they behaved inexcusably during the Holocaust but their mea culpa was obviously not sincere. Thus, Erlanger is an appropriate mouthpiece for such a despicable organization. As a matter of fact, he is both stupid and despicable. Basically, what he is saying is that since Israel refused to embed his reporters, he didn't know what was going on so he based his stories on the Hezbollah version of what happened and reported obvious lies as the truth. He shows how cold-hearted he is towards Israel by actually criticizing a country that was taking thousands of missile hits(all directed against Israeli civilians) of not caring about Lebanese civilians even though Israel dropped leaflets warning civilians to leave. Is Erlanger a self-hater, a delusional leftist, an antisemite or just a garden variety psychopath?

Laughable at best. Nic Robertson, CNN's signature reporter in Lebanon was completely fooled by his manipulation at the hands of Hizballah during his famous report in Lebanon. Even his colleague the more credible Anderson Cooper spoke about how journalists were manipulated by HIzballah. Why can't Israel's advocates accept that not everything is perceived as they see it and that someone can disagree without being an anti-Semite? Hardly half of Lebanon was flattened. The media mostly showed the same area in Beirut, while 99.9% of the city was unharmed. If the IDF didn't try to minimize civilians deaths, would you really expect, after a month, as many Lebanese casualties as there were? (And I wonder how many of them are Hizballah in civilian clothing?)

Partly because their prespective is their happy, threat-less, abode. From afar it's easy to be sure diplomacy is the way to pacify everyone. (Also see Iran.) And they assume, for that reason or another, that the underdog is the one that should be sympathized, regardless of the rest. I guess that's good for dramatic effect.
