The idea of the veil comes from a society in which women are closely guarded and their male guardians are the way the interact with the public. Instead of wearing the veil, the women, if genuinely religious, will stay home and let their male relatives go out in public for them.

One big problem with Islam is that it is expansionist, taking over other peoples, forcing them into dhimmitude, destroying their rights. Muslims can no longer do this in Western countries -- they lack the military might. So, they have changed tactics, using Western freedoms to advance their agenda. Some Christians and Jews like to say, "the solution is Christian/Jewish values." In other words, to address the problem, we all need to go back hundreds of years in search of such "values." No, we don't. This move from the Dutch is a shot across the bow to Islam, indicating that Islam will not be able to conquer Netherlands with trickery. I hope the campaign expands. BTW, the Dutch, at least today, are tolerant beyond belief. I visited Amsterdam once. The food? Well, not great, except for Indonesian. The music? Great: the Concertgebouw is a fabulous orchestra, even with that buffoon Chailly conducting (the orchestra ignores him). The city layout is great fun, with all those concentric circles. Two major art museums have fine collections. (Forget about getting into Anne Frank's house -- lines are ridiculous.) The "coffee houses" offer homegrown pot (I don't even like pot, but I did try some, and it was great, for pot). And, my God, the night life is fully as raunchy as everyone says. It's amazing. For gay people, nothing compares. For all people, I'd guess. I wish this unique country well.

People seem to forget that holland is their own country and they have their own way of life and every right to preserve it the way they see fit. The way i see it immigrants must simply FIFO (Fit In or F#@! Hello, Lynne! I was beginning to wonder what happened to you. There is nothing wrong with the veil. Unfortunitely, some people use it and the male's headware, too, to conseal their identity. I am sure you have seen photos of protesting Muslims with their faces covered. I am certain you have read about violent men using female dress to escape, only to fight another day. This scares people. They want better security during a time of uncertainty. If it were not for that, no one would care. In the USA, many states now allow photo ID with the veil after court battles. Personaly, I don't have a problem with it. It just makes it far more difficult to communicate, read facial expressions, etc. It does make it impossible for the hearing impaired to lip read.

Until 9/11, I traveled to London almost every month for a period of six years. I stayed in an area that had many Moslems. During those years I did not see any moslem women with a full face covering. I visited London three months ago and was shocked to see many many woman with only their eyes showing. Some wore masks with 2 little openings for eyes. Theses Islam radicals are "playing" the western countries. The radical Islams are using their religion and the freedoms of democracy to set themselves up so that they can destroy the western culture. While in London I noticied that these woman (maybe they were men) using all the inventions of the West, such as cell phones and IPODS. It is absurd that they are using the freedom of a democracy to do everything possible to hate and try to destroy the West. I am glad that Holland is taking action, every country should do likewise. It is impossible to identify the person and terrorists are using this tent and mask for their terror activities.
