31. Someone from Beirut talking about disgusting?
David Teich ,   Rehovot   (05.07.07)
Yes, it's terrible, but Israelis are shocked and the papers are talking about it. Meanwhile, Lebanon's still in the 60 year long war it declared against Israel, has Shiites, Sunnis and Christians busy shooting and bombing each other and is completely dysfuctional. So Chadi, point me to a Lebanese English language news site where people can complain openly about what's wrong with the country -- and, of course, not get killed for doing so.
32. Thankfully we are all not like that, BUT
שילוה   (05.07.07)
times are changing and I have seen over the last few years we are heading in this direction of self destruction. Where are we going wrong? Is haShem taking us down a path that will cause us to beg for help, and then and only then will we decide to listen? When adults rise for the children, move out of the way on the streets for the children, is this prophecy a warning to us? Just might be so. Selfishness and money are the rule today unfortunatly. We are heading down a slippery slope.
33. If the shoe fits.........#31
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (05.07.07)
I'm not sure where I heard it or who said it, but I remember something about removing the beam from one's own eye before pointing at the mote in the eye of one's brother. Did I, in one fell swoop, just butcher the Old Testament, the new one, the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Vedas? Dang, I, too, seem to be wearing some odd shoes now and then.......
34. Some of you blame terror....
DR ,   Florida, USA   (05.07.07)
this is horrible... it would mean the terrorists have won. They have turned Israelis into heartless creatures with no regard or love for their brothers and sisters. What a horrible state of affairs. Israelis need to start showing the same compassion and love we saw 50 years ago. This is waht makes Israel great.
35. Whats the big deal?
freejay ,   Israel   (05.07.07)
You can clearly see 3 people coming to his aid so whats all the fuss? Do they expect every motorist to stop and cause another accident?More propaganda supported by ynet
36. #29 - Brauner's right (this time).....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (05.07.07)
this is anomolous. People in this country usually rush to help others in need. But we are so quick to judge ourselves, our country our government, etc. harshly. A healthy self-criticism is fine, but in this is not the Israel I know. Plus, it was a matter of seconds, in all fairness to the people who drove by. I don't know what they saw or thought.
37. # 35 Your "me...me...me attitude
Isac ,   Florida   (05.07.07)
is disguisting. I hope, that you won't need somewhere in the future yourself help from others may it be as a reservist in the IDF or in a traffic accident. You are one thing for sure: selfish and ignorant.
38. Israel and its Mad Roads
CC ,   USA   (05.07.07)
Have a good look at the streets of Israel and this junction in particular!!! WHAT is a Motorcycle doing in the MIDDLE of the road BYPASSING TRUCKS AND OTHER TRAFFIC!! Where are the designated lanes for motorcycles? Goodness me this is COMMON SENSE! Since when can you bypass at a JUNCTION! Who is the genius who designs these traffic roads? Moshe is dead because somebody has no common sense! Ministry of Transportation is just functioning on retarded brains. This is unbelievable - it is all common sense but they have none! Yeah - blame the folks who continue their journey - who is going to stop in the middle of a junction?? Without a camera to show the evidence nobody would believe this!
39. A few observations
Shai ,   Israel   (05.07.07)
1) it was a driver instructor (sic!) who killed himself trying to wend through the space between 2 trucks, which is illegal and dangerous. I'm not sure what that says, but it's not complementary. 2) I think the observations made had a thread of truth in them that has been overlooked. For the most part I think those who think Israelis are callous are way off the mark. You'vve missed the source of the problem. We live in a society where we have been conditioned to be passive and leave the thinking and doing to others. In fact, "others" like it that way, as it gives them room to maneuver. It's too easy to be taken to task by sticking your neck out by these "experts", even if you are a voter and merely want a say in whether your government stands, as we saw when the government ignored the demonstrations of last week.. It's here the major change has occured. The state was built by others, laymen and experts, and we're living off the equity. It's the curse of the 2nd generation and the only way to undo it and avoid its worsening is to give people the feeling that success depends on them, that their contributions matter, and that they are necessary not just to themselves and their immediate family, but to the entire family of Israel. To give them the belief that whatever is wrong with Israel can be fixed by what's right with Israel, and that obligation is ours. People have to be conditioned to act, or conditioned to be passive. It's the conditioning that's the probem. How that will happen with the patronistic political system we have that discourages a third sector (voluntary - not connected to government), I can't speculate, but that's what has to happen. We need a different kind of government and educational system than we have now, that's for sure.
40. selfish Israelis
andy ,   orlando,fl   (05.07.07)
I am Israeli. This is typical Israeli selfish nature.Whoever did not stop contributed to that mans death
41. #35
Adam ,   Manchester   (05.07.07)
you were probably one of the drivers....... Try and think of it in the terms of someone who YOU might love or care about more than yourself...........if that is anyone at all......
42. I am sure that this happens all over the world........
Adam ,   Manchester   (05.07.07)
but Israel has the technology to capture it on a motorway camera. Are you trying to tell me that this doesnt happen in every country every day to some extent. Whether it is a road accident, a person drowning, clearly suffering from a heart attack or a just cry for help. An advert was commissioned about 5 years ago in the UK to recruit for the police force. It was a 'real' situation of a man about to throw himslef off a pedestrian bridge in London at a busy time of day and its aim was to see whether people would pass by or try and coax him down. Sure it was edited etc but it did show scores of passers by just looking and casually walking by whilst only a few were captured on camera convincing the man to not commit suicide and tried to talk him down from jumping spot (I dont think that all the passers by were Israelis) ....this is humanity the world over, not just Israel.
43. Something does not add up!
CC ,   USA   (05.07.07)
Here are some observation of the clip shown: Accident happens at 14:08:10. At the bottom of the screen appears a person who seems to call in the accident! It takes till 14:09:50 or 1' 40 seconds for by passers to realize what has happened and to get to injured person. The person who has the accident is (of all people) a DRIVING INSTRUCTOR on a moppet. Don't you think he should know better than to bypass on a junction and to bypass a truck on a junction!? The voice reporting this accident is upset because the first car did not stop. One can see clearly that nobody wants to stop on the crossroads, which are normal reflections. 1) You do not expect to find a body lying on the ground at a junction 2) you do not stop in the middle of a junction. These first reactions seen are logical. While the speaker is very critical of the people who do not stop she doesn't observe that the streets do not have designated motorcycle/bicycle lanes. While watching 1'40" may seem long in reality this time laps is rather very short in real life (speak on the phone for 1'40") - Just think the commentary given here ( " the obvious indifference of the passers by") is very harsh and unwanted, painting a heartless and inconsiderate society. Maybe it is wise to refrain or think twice before adding emotional observations to an event which reflects on an entire nation? Hate mongrels love this and Israel can do without this sort!
44. THE GOOD SAMARITAN
Arik Silverman ,   MIlwaukee USA   (05.07.07)
'According to Rabbi Sherlow helping others is a moral obligation: "The halacha also tells us not to 'stand idly by the blood of thy neighbor' (Leviticus 19/16). You cannot see a man in distress and not offer a helping hand."' This makes one think of the Christian parable of Jesus rearding the Good Samaritan. A Jewish man was attacked by thieves and left by the roadside. Passersby, even a Levite, failed to help him. Then a Samaritan came by and helped the man, even paying for him to stay in an inn and heal. Note that Leviticus above qualifies help to "neighbor." Jesus used this parable to extend the meaning of "neighbor" to non-Jews. In this modern story, however, it appears that Jews won't even help fellow Jews, let along Samaritans. CAN THIS BE ISRAEL?
45. Truth Is - Nobody Gives a Shit
ys ,   Eretz Yisrael   (05.07.07)
about anyone else - so stop pretending.
46. Selfish Bastards
jj ,   Israel   (05.07.07)
There's no reason to keep up the charade. Either their be a complete revolution of this country INSIDE AND OUT - within each and every SOUL or else let the atom bomb fall and end it all.
47. Moshe Israeli what a common name as
driver   (05.07.07)
a symbol of any man/woman it could have been just you or me ..anyone and he was left there accept 2 other motorcyclers who stopped immediately as identification oneself with fellow motorcycler...The driver was rushing between 2 trucks who slowed down I heard he was a motorcycler driving TEACHER !!! with an old fashion helmet !! let him RIP.
48. Not the whole story
Jeff ,   Milwaukee, WI   (05.07.07)
At the end of the video people are starting to come around to help the guy. The cement truck driver comes into the scene as the clip ends. It seems obvious to me that people are stopping to help and other people are just trying to get out of the way. This road seems very busy and it would not be helpful to stop right in the middle of the intersection. It probably would take a minute or so to get to this guy to help out.
49. the good samaritan?
yeled ,   israel   (05.07.07)
now you know why the g.d gave us the torah to the jewish nation, we need it the most....love thy neighbour as you would yourself? here is 10000 mile per hour western lifestyle, versus a little moped ,long live the small things like careing and sharing and little mopeds.
50. Conspicuous Omissions
Jack Sprat ,   USA   (05.07.07)
I can't believe that the article included no mention of the fact that perhaps Israeli society is a bit concerned with terrorism!!! A body in the street may not just be a body in the street. Just like the guy on the bus wearing a jacket in June may not just be a guy wearing a jacket in June. The professor just blames capitalism and says there is a government solution. Typical elite with his head buried in the sand telling the rest how to live.
51. Yet, another proof that this is not a state
Salameh ,   Gaza, Palestine   (05.07.07)
A state built on an occupied land is not a state, it is just a collection of immigrants from every corner of the world looking for $$$. nothing binds them together, what s pity?
52. israeli values
barry ,   safed israel   (05.07.07)
had there been a $50 bill or even a 50 shekel note lying on that road junction,as opposed to that poor unfortunate victim may he rest in peace, you can be sure all the israeli drivers would have stopped sharpish.I am sorry if this is offensive but, alas, the truth hurts.yediot publish if you dare
53. Dying man in road
Bill ,   US   (05.07.07)
Many times it is a more dangerous situation when you have a group of people wandering around in an intersection. I would bet that many of the people that passed by called the police, which is the right thing to do.
54. Puh-leeeze!
Ariel ,   USA   (05.07.07)
The video showed that after ONE minute people showed up to help. During that one minute, really no one could have stopped in the intersection to render help without putting more lives in danger. Get real!!! This happens in Europe, and USA too. Stop this bullshit about Israeli society being soooo bad. I'll tell you a bad society that people should worry about: IRAN, ARABIA and NORTH KOREA.
55. israeli mentality
barry ,   safed israel   (05.07.07)
never mind some poor unfortunate bleeding to death in middle of road.the important thing is: was he askenazi or sefardi? was he religious or secular? what did he do for a living and how much money was he worth?plus...what is in it for me?
56. Lying in the street
Joe ,   Israel   (05.07.07)
I can picture it now. One or two drivers stop in the middle of a busy intersection to give aid. Within seconds, there would be a pileup of vehicles. Other drivers would not be able to see the person that was injured lying in the road. They would only be able to see the vehicles that suddenly stopped. Then others would have to "Rubber neck" in order to see what was happening. Bang! Another pileup. First of all, the people that should be condemned are the motorcycle and scooter drivers that weave in and out of traffic, take dangerous chances in order to pass, and put themselvs and other drivers in mortal danger.
57. Guilty, me too
Andrea ,   So California   (05.07.07)
Sometimes the situation can seem surreal, and it takes a few moments to wrap our brains around what we are seeing. I've been guilty too. A man walked up to me in a grocery store with arms outstretched & blood gushing from his eye sockets. It was surreal. I could not understand what I was seeing, so I failed to react appropriately. He was a pedestrian hit by a car. And notice on the video that even the other moped riders are a bit hesitant to react...no hand jestures to warn oncoming vehicles to stop.
58. to #37 and #41
freejay ,   Israel   (05.07.07)
I guess you 2 never looked at the video. Did you even bother to read my post properly? You can clearly see 3 people stop and help him, and those other drivers that didnt stop, only did so either because they couldnt or didnt see him, so whats your problems and whats the big deal???????
59. #51
Adam ,   Manchester   (05.07.07)
Trust a Pally to bring statehood into this tragic situation! Israel was legitimised by the UN on 29th November 1947 and was later recognised by every major and/or Democratic power. Who actually recognises 'Palestine'? No-one as it doesnt exist! LOL! Also, I forgot how 'humane' and 'civilised' the Palestinian people are..........
60. #51 Except in Gaza Salameh....
Lina ,   USA   (05.07.07)
Cab drivers are dragged out of their cars by carjackers who steal their vehicle and young women are dragged out of cars and beaten to death for sitting in a car with their fiance. You have nothing to contribute because you live in a chaotic society where no one values human life and violence rules the street.
