61. To all "Benchwarmers" with a wife and kids.
Galit ,   NYC   (05.18.07)
Sha na na na, Sha na na na...GET A JOB.
62. where is it written?
tom ,   toronto, canada   (05.18.07)
this is the first generation, in jewish history, where studying is considered to be a viable way of earning a living for an entire generation. even the great scholars of the talmud had "jobs" that fed them and their families, and didn't rely on handouts. and in europe, only the most exceptional students could expect to be supported by the community. nowadays, yeshiva students outside of israel are encouraged to learn some kind of trade alongside their studies, but this isn't so in israel, where most rabbis actually discourage students from such a "waste of their time". why is it okay for a yeshiva bocher to be an accountant in new york but not in b'nai brak? it is sad to see people living in poverty, but it is also difficult to help someone who will not help himself.
63. to #44
tom ,   toronto, canada   (05.18.07)
"im ein kemakh, ein torah" i didn't invent that. the torah ALONE is not enough to preserve the world. it's time that the hareidim acknowledged, publicly, that they depend on the support of *all* of am yisrael, without whom there would be no torah.
64. Slaves in Mitsrayim
Russel ,   Tlv   (05.18.07)
And one that is not known chutz laratz. So many people concerned with the "inside", not the "outside" and we are too shallow ot recognise this fact. This is why Israel is in a hole. Like Egypt. Slaves in Mitsrayim No Spiritutality. No love for it's brothers and sisters.
65. #49-60: Where can I get some of that Turkish arak?
Besalel ,   Kew Gardens, NY   (05.18.07)
Man, you're nuts. What a riot! I would watch that reality show: Tali meets a drunk Attila for an hour conversation about his daughter while his wife watches. It's like the Best of Jerry Springer.
66. "PEOPLE OF THE BOOK" ??!
Rick ,   Open Range, USA   (05.18.07)
Okay, all you Hebrews will have to tolerate a stupid question from a goyim. What is meant by "People of the Book"? This is terminology used by Muhammad and Muslims. It means "Jews and Christians". Tali, did you mean that? You want to entrust the study of Torah to Christians as well as Jews?
67. #43 Gabriela, you made my day!
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (05.18.07)
FARTSQUASH! LOL you read my mind, babe.
68. #38 Ever heard of Lev Leviev?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (05.18.07)
He is Haredi, building synagogues and yeshivos all over the former USSR and Israel, in addition to all his other businesses.
69. #39, I am not offended. You can't be both Haredi and a Jew
Barry   (05.18.07)
Haredi, whilst you state that a "Chared Lidvar Hashem" cannot support Torah transgressors, you do not explain why both Agudah and Degel Hatorah insist that these Torah transgressors support them through welfare. Welfare (as opposed to Tzedaka) is not a Torah value but a modern social democratic practice (like allowing freedom of religion and non belief). Haredism, like any other cult which seeks to keep its followers from outside influences is the very opposite of Judaism. It is not "Torah True" but a modern phenomenon. The suggestion that its ignorant, thuggish and corrupt "Gedolim and rabbis" are Charei Lidvar Hashem is blasphemous. Haredism by creating a schnorrer society is a slow Jonestown which survives only because no Jew wishes to see the children of even those who despise them starve.
70. THE PLIGHT OF STARVING TORAH SCHOLARS
DANIEL RICH ,   RECHOVOT   (05.18.07)
THE RELIGIOUS PARTIES HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO SUPPORT THEIR FOLLOWERS
71. Men should both study the Torah AND Work
Prof.Michael Stutzer ,   USA   (05.18.07)
Working for pay enriches a man's ability to live a Jewish way of life. I look forward to Torah study after working, and applying it while working. People who spend full-time studying anything are making a mistake. More masters of Pilpul aren't needed. More outreach is, and work is a good way to both implement and spread Torah. I'd be glad to donate funds to assist male haredim who need to acquire job skills.
72. dont you have anything good to say
Rueven ,   NYC   (05.18.07)
your always crying and whining. Ynet uses you like the shabbos goy of the religous world. You dont represent datim you represnet your checkbook. That aside, you are pretty sexy.
73. TALI, THERE IS A SOLUTION !

74. #66 THE GOYIM HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO STUDY THE NOAHIDE LAWS

NOAHIDE LAW S AS INTERPRETED AND PUBLISHED BY A ORTHODOX TORAH PUBLISHING COOMPANY ONLY
75. ATILLA'S HON
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (05.18.07)
ATILLA, U DA KILLA!
76. These so-called "orthodox"
Gal   (05.18.07)
All these so-called "orthodox" who think they speak for Judaism -- they are just fashion jews who blindly follow the letter of the law while ignoring the law's true spirit! They do not represent the Jews! Do you think that 2,000 years ago the Jewish sages, priests and prophets in Jerusalem dressed like a bunch of merchants from 19th century Lithuania? These so-called "religious" "haredi" orthos are just a drain on society -- they do not contribute anything, they do not serve their country in the army and their beliefs are primitive and embarassing to a modern Jew. The greatest Jews of modern times -- Einstein, Freud, Herzl, Kafka, etc. -- were deep believers without being orthodox. They are the true representatives of the Jewish People!
77. About time someone says it the way it is
David ,   NYC USA   (05.18.07)
78. Yup Yup Yup Yup Hm Hm Hm Get a Job
PAm Beesley ,   New York, New York   (05.18.07)
The tanaim had jobs. The amoraim had jobs. The Rishonim had jobs. Shlomie from the Mir should get a job. Work at least three hours a day.
79. Bankropt Torah Society
Avraham ,   New York   (05.18.07)
I am ultra orthodox, I guess, but I do work 8 hours a day, and I do study for 2 hours a day and I learn with my children for about 1-2 hours a day. Unfortunately, the leaders of today's Jewish community are corrupt and blind. They advocate only Torah learning, everything else is Goish and despicable. Well, obviously I disagree, and there are many voices in this forum who clearly believe in Torah principles of combining work (derech eretz) with Torah studies. Yes, the religious world today is a bit crazy, they study and while studying thinking of how they can support their families and thus really not studying very well, I would even say that those studies are very useless. And eventually they ran away from the study halls into the street to bag, to do a primitive job or even to start not very Kosher businesses. Obviously the religious people are threatened by their own society that claim that if person is not religious enough – he/she will not find the shidduch, or if he teaches his children a profession – those kids will not find a shidduch, etc. It is a pure LIE! Nobody wants a shiduch with the boy that is just a bench warmer, or who would want to marry a girl that brainwashed to work all her life and have 14 children and support her husband all life. This is a pure perversion of Torah, advocated by current corrupt Yeshivah systems. How to stop this? Prayers could help. Stop lying to oneself- could help. A real Jewish education - that is a combination of Torah and simple human literacy - will help. Tshuvah of the BIG rabbis and change the world towards a True Derch Eretz could help. The main thing, Orthodox people - stop lying to yourself, stop having fear of stupidity, be yourself, truthful to G-d and his Torah. If you are courageous to learn all day long - kol ha kavod, but if you are not - get real, get an education, get a job and learn Torah for full 2-4 hours the best you can, you can accomplish much more this way! Imagine, you, my religious brother, that you are learning Torah and you are respected by all the people (religious and non-religious) – isn’t it a bigger Kiddush HaShem! Shalom.
80. Atilla, does this mean you are no longer obsessed ...
sk ,   USA   (05.19.07)
with the idea of being PM?
81. get a job!
Steve G ,   Kew Gardens, NY, USA   (05.19.07)
Hillel devoted himself to studying the Torah while also working as a woodcutter. Are you better than Hillel?
82. GODLESS HAREDIM WANT THE STATE TO PROP THEM UP
(05.19.07)
You want to avoid humiliation? You want cheese cake on Shavuout? Stop acting Holier than the rest of us - go to the army, get a job, and work for your money. Stop you incessant whining - we don't want to help you because you HATE us.
83. Nisht af Shabbes gerent
Mush DeLeon ,   Brooklyn, New York   (05.19.07)
It's almost Shabbat in Brooklyn, why must you bum me out? That shayne punim should be telling us good news.
84. NOT ASSIMILATING HAS ITS PRICE
Dr. Rick ,   USA   (05.19.07)
Torah study is wonderful and should be part of a BALANCED SPIRITUAL LIFE. Life requires obligations to G-D our families, our friends, to the society we live in, and also to ourselves. Life evolves and so should we. Regular dedication to Torah study is important and admirable. Putting down the BOOK from time to time is sensible and necessary to apply principles and to engage with life in a practical and BALANCED WAY. Denial of modernity, new ways of seeing ancient principles, and unwarranted fear and guilt are no way to live, thrive and prosper, and in the end prove unhealthy to oneself and society.
85. the real pity
Meni   (05.19.07)
is that those talmud scholars cannot put their brains to work supporting themselves. everybody has to work. its a fact of life. they could work part time and with their brains could actually generate enough income to make their shopping carts over flowing, and still have enough time to study torah.
86. Torah Now
steven stein ,   Bayonne USA   (05.18.07)
After the Whole IDF thing, Tali You need to become a goyim. What are you doing Torah Now
87. Torah world is starving
Joe ,   Afula   (05.19.07)
Perhaps these people SHOULD GET JOBS LIKE THE REST OF US!!!
88. Daniel V.D., Avraham [ NY ] and others
charles ,   petach tikva   (05.19.07)
You are both , and the others too , religious , ultra Orthodox or Charidi . You wrote that you are working , and also study . This way allows you to leave the supermarket with a full caddy . Very fine . My question : if You , and many others can combine earning a living and study of the Tora , why do not more people do it ? or is it , as Gabriela writes , below their status ? I think , and know it from Antwerp , that abroad ,many very religious men are working , make a good living , and certainly also study . I think that their status is much higher , that they deserve more respect than most of those "benchwarmers" in Israel .
89. "Torah world is starving"
Very anti Haredi ,   Beloved Israel   (05.19.07)
Starve ! Start to work and start to be pragmatic. Stop living in a dream world of fantasy. Start to be responsible members of Judaism and society. Stop poisoning the minds of your young from birth and encouraging them to become useless leeches and parasites. I have a great love for Israel and its people. I have a great contempt for the haredim who have nothing whatsoever to do with Judaism, ancient or modern. They are a strange anomoly in a sea of normality. They have an emetic effect on me as they do with most normal Jews. When society demands the stoppage of budgets to support their abnormal useless life they will slowly disappear. The laws of nature dictate that an entity or organism which does not adapt to its surroundings will become extinct. I personally would like these people to go back to Poland and Lithuania from whence they came. They do not belong to Judaism.
90. Women to take charge
Genie ,   UK   (05.19.07)
Why does anyone actually think the haredi have 'brains' in the academic sense. Most of them don't work because it's the easy option - lazy and living off the state. There are plenty of dati people who work to support their familes AND study Torah. The women should take over - things would soon change.
