1. scramble
peter ,   amsterdam NL   (05.31.07)
Quote: "Israeli visitors talk on their cellular phones despite unequivocal requests not to. They talk even inside the gas chambers, dishonoring the place, the museum said. ". It's possible to sramble the GSM reception in the area so no one can use a mobile phone there. But the behaviour of the Israëli youngsters on holiday generally or on Auschwitz tour specifically leaves a lot more to be desired. There is something seriously lacking in the upbringing and education('Chinuch') of Israëli kids-values and norms of decent civilized behaviour. Something both parents and schoolteachers should take to heart and the govt. should encourage.
2. how dare they!
Meni   (05.31.07)
"Polish officials have also complained about the Israeli youth who walk in the streets wrapped in Israeli flags. " tsk tsk
3. Calling from Poland
Voice of Reason ,   Here&Now   (05.31.07)
This time they are right, our children do not know how to behave. Aside from that why do we go anyhow we are just funding their Disney show of how they killed our people. Save the money for things needed here. Let the Poles wonder where the money went.
4. No shame!
Talula ,   Israel   (05.31.07)
It's not unusual to hear cell phones ringing during a service in a cemetary either. It's shocking. People should be fined for using them at inappropriate times.
5. Polish complaints
Rav King ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (05.31.07)
Oh all of a sudden they care about respecting Jews? Please. Maybe they respect dead Jews, but living ones they still hate.
6. how low can we get ?
Michael ,   Haifa   (05.31.07)
The nation that claims to be a "light unto the peoples" is plumbing new depths.
7. to rav king - education and memory
shimon ,   madrid   (05.31.07)
hey rav king don't you be so simple in your interpretation of reality. i know it's difficult to use the brain some time, but make at least an effort! i'm jewish, born in poland and with family in this country. there is still some antisemitism there, but, it's not stronger that this deep antipolish hatred i meet in many israelis. completely irrational, considering that the nazis murdered jews in poland but with german, austrian, ucrainian and other's help, but without a considerable collaboration by the polish inhabitants (even though there were well known examples of such a collaboration). Do you hate French people as you hate poles? I Suppose you know that French people collaborated with hitler more actively than the poles. And if you don't know, learn something before speaking. I love israel and its people, but i'm quite tired of this continous disrespect towards poland and poles. you just can't come to poland and treat them all as antisemites and idiots. And, after all, what the hell has polish antisemitism to do with the use of cells in gas chambers? just think a moment: what would you feel if a pole used a phone in a gas chamber? come on, man, being jews and victims of holocaust doesn't give us the right to treat other people as shit and to disrespect the memory of our victims
8. #5 They only respect dead Poles
MARK ,   USA   (05.31.07)
They do not care that Jews were killed there. They have respect for non-Jewish Poles only.
9. To nr 1 KEY WORD
DAVID ,   JUDEA   (05.31.07)
The root of the problem is precisely in the word Israeli. The sole focus since 1948 has been the creation of the so-called Israeli image. So anything to do with our past cultural or ethnical roots has been surprised or cut off. I worked for a number of years in the tourist industries in Amsterdam during the early 70’s; even then they were one of the most difficult groups to deal with. You ask for a change in education that is going to be difficult when the people in charge behave and set examples the way they do here. The fundamental moral and ethical code from our people is being denied and not thought, except to a minority of people. Change can only occur when people start taking personal responsibility and use our own resources for education. As you can see I stayed away from words like torah and Judaism, because the censors at Ynet hate the use of this kind of terminology. Anything that could point us in that direction, is considered sac religious by our fine liberal Zionists that has its roots in socialism also known as atheism.
10. Hooked on Cellphones.....
Hiram ,   tel-aviv   (05.31.07)
Israeli teens are hooked on cellphones in Israel too. This is a cultural item. The cellphone providers have managed to get the Israeli youth positively addicted to that gadget and this combined with an unfinished education deprives israeli youth of the basic good manners and expecially respect for such places as Oswiecim. I do not blame the administration of the Museum for complaining. They are positively right to do so. We owe the victimes who diedin the camps not only " rememberance" but also respect, and this includes not only the Jewish victims but also the Gypsies, the Political inmates, the Homosexuals, and all of the categories which were murdered by the Nazi regime. Israeli youth should work on their behaviour AND at home AND ABOVE ALL when travelling abroad. There is positively NO excuses for this kind of behaviour, especially coming from them. Additionally, displays of Nationalism are NEVER a good thing, would it be in Poland or anywhere else ! Shape up Kids !
11. Bravo Shimon! Bravo
Andre ,   TLV   (05.31.07)
Great talkback
12. Talmudistan is coming...
(05.31.07)
This is what happens you start teaching religion dogmas instead of religion values and cheap answers instead of questions. Israel is quickly turning into a brainwashed society... Talmudistan is near, talmudistan is near...
13. Israeli misconduct
Marjolein Rijnveld ,   Israel   (05.31.07)
Israeli youth and their parents / teachers should be deeply ashamed of them selves, This behaviour causes a lot of trouble and uproar. And later all of us are shouting " the whole world is against us, dirty anti-semethists". I think it will be a painful and well-earned lesson for these anti-social Israelies and I really do hope that Poland will close the doors for Israeli tourists to come in! It is disgusting and it shows how rotten our society really has become and to what extend the parents and teachers of children today are incapable of giving their kids proper guidelines and education, because they are so busy with their own needs and careers! Shame on us. Blame on us.
14. Misquided intentions
SP ,   Israel   (05.31.07)
Sending our children to Poland is misguided. Poland should not profit from its part in the extermination of our people. Our children can learn about the holocaust at Yad Vashem.
15. They should jam signals there so that visitors feel isolated
Shuki   (05.31.07)
No lifeline to the outside world. Just each other -- and the gas chambers... In the meantime, chaperones, do your jobs and smack your kids around so they show a little respect, okay?
16. Let's live the living live!
Andras Bereny ,   Kfar Tapuah, Shomron   (05.31.07)
Let's live the living live! For Jewish teens is OK to call mum from the gas-chambers or from anywhere else they want. The "museum" is for them and not the other way round. The memory of the perished is better served by lively and happy and beautiful Jewish kids, G-d bless them, rather than silent ones.
17. Reverence
Not Jewish ,   USA   (05.31.07)
Some things you do out of respect, like turning off your cell phones in houses of worship, at funerals and for sure at the death camp of Auschwitz. A visit to this camp where the evil Holocaust was inflicted on the Jewish people should be a dose of reality for Jews and Gentiles. Please turn off your phones at Auschwitz.
18. Mistaking freedom with anarchy is a common thing
Lednah ,   Europe   (05.31.07)
Thinking freedom means anarchy is not a patent of jewish youth. Remember the english and irish which travel abroad to get itself dead drunk and then start fighting and vandalizing. As for the kids using cellphones in gas chambers... well, they are kids after all. And this is not victims disrespect, this is just the childish "Wow! See where am I". You cannot expect the kids to behave like an adult. As for the youth walking on the streets wrapped in israeli flags - it is just kind of challenge. The youth still have to learn the life consists of compromises. Some of them will never learn it - and they will move either to extreme left of extreme right.
19. #7 Get a Spine
Yonatan Koss ,   Chiloquin   (05.31.07)
I don’t like apologists for Goy brutality or foisting religious X-tian values in historic sites. The Poles have all but hung crosses on those ovens. Oh dear, Israeli flags in Poland, to think a Jew not subjugated by catholic oligarchy would dare walk down a polish street! The Polish tacit acceptance of Jew killing as a norm is more than well documented. I doubt that you are even Jewish for trying to stifle the indignant rage in modern Jews over the buffoonery and still anti-Semitic reasoning of the Polish people. If you are a Jew, leave that unholy ground and go home to Israel. In any case stop being an apologist for a corrupt society that still hates Jews!
20. Leave cell phones at the security station
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (05.31.07)
Most other museums require visitors to check their cellphones. Never mind that it is disrespectful to the memory of the victims, IT IS JUST PLAIN FREAKING RUDE.
21. Famous Israeli RUDENRSS is growing EXPONENTIALLY
malcolm   (05.31.07)
22. let them talk!
Igor D. ,   new york   (05.31.07)
considering what jews went through, they should be allowed to do whatever they want!
23. #16
mark ,   ca   (05.31.07)
There is a place and right time for everything.Yad Vashem have a policy- NO cell phones and cameras.Aushvitz is not a place for Jewish children to be happy.
24. This is just a sign
Isac ,   Florida   (05.31.07)
of bad parenting. Nothing else. Kids not just in Israel do not learn anymore what boundries are. To all the parents and teachers: show your kids what decency and ethics are. And to the parents in general: be a role model!!!
25. Cell phones
charles ,   petach tikva   (05.31.07)
How would we react if a Pole , or an other Non Jewish , would use his [ or her ] cell phone in the "hall of remembrance" at Yad Vashem ? Not only the Youth , their parents too . Even at commemorations for the fallen soldiers in Israel's wars , you can hear them ringing . Sad , very sad .
26. Go on Israel..
Simon ,   Malha   (05.31.07)
Kudos to the Israelis they are showing the world that EUROPE really hasn't moved on.. it seems if your in EUROPE you have to do it their way unless your Muslim where you have to do it their way.. so basically, if your Jewish you have to conform and if your not their scared! Jews can decide what is right or wrong in places where thousands of JEWS were killed, I am sure of that.. I think if I had died there I would be so pleased for a living survivor to be on the phone in the place that was HELL to me.. it shows we survived! As for Shin bet going with.. well they need to ... just look at Europe its full of terrorists! So take the flags and even if your a secular JEW where your capel.. for your a JEW noless!
27. The Eastern European pseudo-politeness BS
Antonio ,   Haifa   (05.31.07)
So what if they talk on cell phones? What's the big deal? The Eastern Europeans are kings of tackiness, yet they find such simple things as taking on a cell phone or chewing gum to be generally offensive. What a bunch of preposterous stooges.
28. i was there
israeli student   (05.31.07)
during the time of the misbehaviour of students in the hotel.. it was the hotel i stayed in! and i do agree they need to shut off thier phones, the need to respect !
29. #26 Rubbish, it just shows Israeli disrespect
Donna S. ,   Netanya, Israel   (05.31.07)
Simon, were you brought up in a cave? Please, we do not get an "ishur" because we are Jews. What if it had been a holy site? Well...in a way it is. Israelis act badly all over the world, especially in hotels. I have seen it and it is disgusting. Using a cell phone in a gas chamber is REPULSIVE. Children in this country are NOT disciplined and parents like you are the problem. As far as the flags go, they should be restricted to Auschwitz. That is the place where the flags are a tribute and an answer to the horror.
30. Develop feeling for the horrible past – learn behavior.
H.H.M ,   israel   (05.31.07)
Being under the impression that the excesses in this behavior are unfortunately those of a rather large Israeli group youngsters. What has to be regretted is that the accompanying Israeli representatives don’t seem to be able to prevent “such misbehaviors.” – It is difficult to understand that these misbehavior did no cause the competent authorities to act against it. Especially as quite a number of grandparents possible victims of Holocaust - are still living witnesses on the other side from the organizers authorities insufficient preparation for these visits and learning about this an understandable historical Holocaust period in its various aspects and forms plus possible influence to our and world’s future We always claim the world doesn’t like to be reminded of the Holocaust is not informed sufficiently about it, to try to digest this historical facts. Here we in Israel seem to be suffering from the same “not being informed about the Holocaust and despite our national day of mourning!” - Our present lifestyle and approach to life in general doesn’t seem to be appropriately qualified to deal with our own families, past otherwise such excesses of Israeli youngster 14- 18 years old could not be happening! Simply it could be explained on lack of understanding, of own history and a flight from hard historical facts! At least these officially organized groups of “PILGRIMAGE i n t o HOLOCAUST must invest far more effort, time and knowledge to prepare the participants of the background of East European Jewish history and way of life prior to the Holocaust. In completion to this the preparation must also include the difference between the life of those in the East to those in Middle and West Europe. These educational preparations m u s t b e f r e e of ideological / political opinions! - Israel could also profit from those preparing for pilgrimage by learning general behavior / considerations. D O N ’T D O T O O T H E R S W H AT Y O U D O N ‘ T W A N T O T H E R S D O T O Y O U.“- P r e p a r e f u t u r e p i l g r i m a g e s b y h a v i n g t a u g h t b e h a v i o r / m a n n e r s a n d a l o t m o r e o f h i s t o r i c a l b a c k g r o u n d s.
