1. new rightist party
Jason Gold ,   New York, USA   (06.21.07)
Dr. Breiman. You are almost correct. What we need is faith-based leadership that can appeal to the secular public that under the surface, respects Jewish tradition and values. That leadership has a name; Manhigut Yehudit and Moshe Feiglin.
2. well said : i'd prefer Landau/ Feigelin to BIbi
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (06.21.07)
the important point we should all agree with is that we need to get together no matter what, that is if we dont want to bury the last remnants of Israel. Religious or not - who cares ? Look what Baruch Marzel did by taking thousands of votes down the drain We dont need to vote for a party that meets our taste but the one that will save the country Real power means controlling media, as leftists have been doing ever since, even during Bibi's tenure. Take that ministry, TV everything.
3. What are we going to do with the arabs who live there....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (06.21.07)
Dr. Genius? Rule over them forever? Expel them? Just settle them out of existence? Your warmed over, discredited ideas of the past will bring not hope, but a guarantee we continue this conflict for generations. We need to tough this out and keep fighing, smash them when we need to , until the Palestinians (and yes, Palestinians do exist as a nationality) are smart enough to produce leaders who accept compromise. There is no other alternative, and our persistence, knowing the rightousness of our cause, a democtric Jewish state will allow us to prevail.
4. Call it the secular orange party
Steve ,   USA   (06.21.07)
B"H For some region "religious" just does not bring in the pie unless the party is Shas. So the party has to define itself as "secular" in order to be legal and get any votes. Really there ought to be planning on the platform and explanation on the coalition principles given so people feel that this is a solid move with solid people behind it to can carry the day. It is a big trick because "disengagement" put the orange people at the bottom of the social caste in Israel which is very stratified, denying people rights so that even the post office does not deliver letters the same for the disengaged versus those who live in Tel Aviv. The disengagement really was about the "disenfranchisement" of a huge sector of Israeli society, and the orange movement is a social-justice movement as well as a settlement-of-the-land movement. I think there is some momentum. I definately see the vacuum as there is no visible representation in this area. The current Kenesset seems to have fallen in line except for MK Hendel. Now there is an idea. Maybe one of the foundations can be to support those Kenesset members who already believe in a sane policy. We will have to see how much honey this project receives from the electorate. It needs to be transformed from a protest movement that was put in prison to a movement that is vocal for rights and makes progress. It is a big task at hand.
5. No Jason (1), Manhigut Yehudit is NOT what we need.
sk ,   USA   (06.21.07)
Please review my TBs on the linked article: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3325076,00.html Feiglin believes in religious coercion, even though he denies it. His comments last year about the pride parade (including, on Arutz Sheva that the pride march was more important than Iran's nukes) show why he his appeal will always be limited. Breiman is correct that Israel desperately needs a secular, orange/pro-orange party. More generally, Israel needs a party that supressess all internal conflicts so as to concentrate on the Arab (and Persian) menace.
6. RIGHT NOW I AM FOR SMALL DEFENCE CHANGES
Meir Weinstein ,   toronto, canada   (06.21.07)
The PA is not capable of helping their voters and I think that helps deflate the demographic problem. More could be done from the IDF and we should focus on this just demand. I think we are wearing our enemy down. Many Arabs would like the IDF to re-occupy the PA areas, this is a trap. Build the fence and give more freedom to the IDF and wait and see.
7. To Andy # 3
Mohammed   (06.21.07)
Understand there is no green line. All of Palestine is Muslim. There is no compromise on our homeland. Go back to Europe or America where you come from. We will not stop fighting until all the land is liberated. Zionism is racism and must end.
8. sounds nice in theory
RobertK ,   Jerusalem   (06.21.07)
I'm just not convinced this "secular orange" public exists. Seculars in central Isael who support the settlement movement in the territories? Maybe Mr. Breiman knows these people, I don't seem to meet them or find them anywhere except in rare exceptions. A "secular securitist" public may exist, concerned about the security importance of the territories rather than their historical-religious dimensions, but even that is hard to detect outside of non-Orthodox but traditional, non-kippa-wearing, often working-class Mizrahi Jews. Most of the seculars are typical citizens of a Western democracy looking to preserve or salvage an easy life and eager for anything the politicians will sell them as "peace."
9. That day is coming professor....that day will soon arrive.
j ,   jerusalem, israel   (06.21.07)
10. To Andy #3 re Mohammed #7
Yisraeli   (06.21.07)
There you go moron, when will you finally learn something? 14 yrs of carnage not enough for you Andy? You still want to wait till these barbarians see the light? Not in a thousand yrs. Your ways have been done to death Andy and has only brought more death even to the other side, all because you cant learnt the simple lesson Mohammed #7 is trying to teach you. But no matter, you and all you lefties are almost fried in the sun, almost everyone is sick to death of all your silly delusions. Mohammed makes alot more sense then you do Andy. At least he states to all what the score is. The score that I have known all along as many do. But Andy I dont expect you to grow up either much like Mo here.
11. in answer to # 3, well what did the arabs do to the jews in
(06.21.07)
all their countries? they threw them out.....why shouldnt we be more like SA and the other 23 islamic nations that do not tolerate jews.....we have only one state, ours. le the arabs go to back of their 23 other nations.....i see nothing wrong with this way of thinking. a complete zioinst state. I am with Herzl
12. Andy, pay attention to #7
sk ,   USA   (06.21.07)
The "Palestinians" are a pawn of outside powers, and have been carefully raised to be pure in their totalitarian, jihadist temperament. Their only purpose is jihad against Jews. Israel is losing ground against this enemy, even though Israel's technology is becoming ever more complex. YOU need to tough this out by understanding that people are NOT people the world over. Muslims do not play well with others, and "Palestinians" are the worst of the bunch. What will Israel do with them? Settle them out of existance. Disengage them from Yesha, just as Jews were disengaged (I'm sure you supported that). They must be denied all services, including water, electricity, health care, trade. They will need to look to Egypt or to Jordan. The land must be inhospitable to them so that they leave. They must know that there is no hope for them in Greater Israel: they will never bring Israel into the House of Islam. These aren't pleasant things to say, but the truth isn't always pleasant. Buck up and tough it out--or Israel will be lost.
13. Hey, Andy ! Mohamed answered to you...
Ezra   (06.21.07)
.. expel them before they expel you ! No need to be a genius to understand it.
14. agree, but...
yosef   (06.21.07)
When elected, Sharon and his government were very Orange. They lied, implemented the Meretz platform and set the Yassam against any protestor. No one cared about this antidemocratic brutality from the Supreme Court, through the Attorney General down to the common people. What Professor Auman wrote a few days ago in YNet is correct. The Jews do not need another political party but to get rid of the ghetto mentality and choose to survive.
15. Hallucinations
Merle ,   Raanana, Israel   (06.21.07)
How low can we sink. Not much lower than to expect someone of the "stature" of the N guy to save Israel, Judaism, Christianity, and the Western World (not to mention cure Global Warming). I wish I could only pity this dumb headedness.
16. the problem is convincing 75% of the jews to vote right
(06.21.07)
17. Another golden calf?
abdulla ,   germany   (06.21.07)
Doesn't the author think that his idea is more of a "golden calf" than any of the other "leftist" ideas that he opposes. At least in the biblical sense of the metaphor. 1) His intentions are "good", so were the intentions of the biblical golden calf makers. 2) By suggesting a secular party he indicates a movement composed of people who lack absolute faith in G-d's redemptive plan for the Jewish people but rather trust their own intellectual and material capabilities to ring it about - just like the biblical golden calf worshippers. 3) Even if he suggested a religious party, it would be much the same, since the main goal of the party (if it is to survive) would be to achieve immediate "right-wing" political goals rather than to help people return to the absolute faith in G-d. 4) But perhsaps the religious party unlike the secular would be honest and make clear that the end result of the right-wing agenda is not so much peace or security but a breathing space from the enemies to allow the opportunity for the tshuvah and that this alone will bring the longed for peace and security. A secular rightwing party is certainly a golden calf. A religious one, perhaps not, but it is a fine line.
18. Excellent column Mr Breiman
Howard K. ,   NYC   (06.21.07)
Just a few suggestions. Make electoral reform part of the platform. This would be a major point of interest for a wide variety of voters. This new party will have to be secular but uphold basic conservative values, and that will require a lot of compromise on both the religious and the seculars. Don't get distracted by special interests, those that will demand privileges in exchange for support. The answer to them is: Let's save Israel first, then there will be plenty of time to discuss your particular interest. The leader that you choose must not have anything in his private life that can be used against him. Someone can easily control a whole number of key people in a country just by using something as simple as blackmail. Whatever your platform turns out to be, let's hope it's one without political correctness. You can either be nice and charitable to the enemy, or you can keep your country. Can't have both at this critical moment. Considering the devious intentions of those Israel is dealing with (UN, EU, Arabs, etc.), being nice and charitable to your critics and the enemy will not work in your favor. I wish Israelis the best of luck in pursuing what is no less than rescuing Israel from the road to self-destruction. Go for it! Don't look at the difficulties. Be positive and just focus on your goal and press ahead.
19. #7 - what you are saying is that.....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (06.21.07)
Meir Kahana was right. And you're right: there is no green line - its now gray, made of cement, several stories high and when finished will wall your asses out of here so you can wallow in the sewage that is Palestinian government. You will never defeat our military or our spirit., and won't win - despite the noisy muslim propaganda machine. Give up the fantasy and compromise with us or you will be expelled. As the majority of the talkbacker posts reflect, Israel has already lost patience with your lot. You don't have much more time to screw up your future and that of your people.
20. We Don't Need More Political Parties.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (06.21.07)
We're dysfunctional enough, thank you. Too many parties is one of our dysfunctions. We need ACCOUNTABILITY - brought about by comprehensive electoral reform.
21. Sorry, but Landau etc are all big shots
sara   (06.21.07)
when they're in the OPPOSITION. They are little 'tattelech' when they get the power they are too frightenend to use and do NOTHING except smile idiotically, especially when an brave answer is/was expected of them. What short memories some of you have, especially the more intelligent ones, at whom I'm really surprised. Prf Aumann way of thinking is the correct one, I don't get the impression he'd 'cave in' like all other macho righties. When the going gets tough the tough get going. Andy saying smash into them is the right one, but then he'll sadly or happily discover we are all only safe when they're 'down there' with their 6dozen virgins( My Gd how I pity those poor girls up there... but I presume they are all potential scum terrorists anyway, so I change my mind)
22. Can I take you out for a beer?
Eliyahu   (06.21.07)
I found this article to be inspirational. YES!! We are so sick of the left wing sellout. REVOLUTION!
23. #16: Wake up! Israel is not majority left.
Eliyahu   (06.21.07)
Kadima won with the smallestr percentage of the vote of any party in Israeli history. It was questionable that there was a mojority of Israelis supporting the pullout from Gush Katif. Olmert now has less than 0% support (Not a euphemism, Fact!) and less of the public supports further unilateral land for peace action (Is that a stupid concept or what?). I've got news for you, the majority of Jews don't eat pork. And you will say they aren't religious. How did Sharon win? The left wing vote? NO!! He won with a landslide right wing extreme hawkish majority, and lied about what he was going to do. The media is a disgusting shame that doesn't print news, or retractions when caught with their pants down. They make it seem like everyhting is peachy in the majority left wing camp. Surprise. They lie.
24. #3: what are you going to do with the jews in Israel.
Eliyahu   (06.21.07)
Oh, I forgot. Transfer is only an illegal concept when dealing with Arabs. Jews who are in the way of leftist agendas get transferred. And that's moral. The left wing is evil. By their own definitions.
25. #17 Andy - Ramat Hashshron
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (06.21.07)
Mohamed illustrates very well why leftists are delusional. It all sounds good, all the liberal rhetoric & fine ideals. It's fine as long as you're talking to nice, Western people, meaning that you're talking to yourselves. The whole thing breaks down when it comes into contact with reality - as well represented by our friend Mohamed. And there are an awful lot of Mohameds out there.
26. #17 Abdullah - Very well stated !
Moussa ,   USA   (06.21.07)
27. When Feiglin becomes PM, transfer will become a reality
Jo ,   Karmiel   (06.21.07)
28. No, no no, that is not what we need!!
Meir ,   Beit Shmesh   (06.21.07)
We need unity on the right, people must compromise a little, the reason Meretz did so well in 1992 was because 3 small parties (Mapam, Shinui, and Ratz) came together, whilst on the right there was Techiya, Tzomet and Moldedet. Now here comes another saviour who cannot vote Likud or NU, so wants to create another party. More wasted votes, and we'll have Olmert/Barak again. No, what is needed is maximum 2 right parties, Likud and NU, preferably a united block. Of course both the NU are Likud are full of people who care more about themselves and their ego, than the future of the country, so I know it will not be easy.
29. New party
Malcolm Schrader ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.21.07)
Dr. Breiman's idea is great in principle. However, will the "machine" fly, or simply split the right wing vote, and install Barak once again. Remember Tehiya?
30. necessary but not sufficient
sk ,   USA   (06.21.07)
I think a secular Orange party is necessary. But, as others here have said, electoral reform (specifically, direct voting for the Knesset) is necessary. Other things are necessary, too. The Israeli media must be confronted, as they have real power AND they do not have the protection that official politicos have. I'd start with a massive compaign to defund Israeli "public" TV by refusal to pay the tax that supports it. There is no need for a government provider. The same should be done for all radio stations. The utlimate goal is to create a truly free press in Israel rather than one that is a tools of the Left.
