Meir Shetrit was the Treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Israel when Communism fell and the huge Aliyah from the Former Soviet Union began. Clearly he was a major party to decisions regarding who to bring on Aliyah (the Treasurer is a senior, political job in the Agency).

The last century witnessed events & conditions unprecedented in Jewish life. In particular, the rate of inter-marriage has been sky-high in many countries, particularly in the ex-Soviet Union. It's not much better in America or Western Europe. People's connexion to Judaism is quite subjective - and how to establish objective criteria without causing more harm than good is no easy task. In addition, people's motivations are complex, Zionism or an attachment to Judaism being only one element in a decision to make Aliyah. Then we come to the problems of conversions, another Pandora's box of trouble & controversy. Before making hasty & ill-advised policy changes (or even having any opinion), it would be wise to examine the real numbers involved, get the facts straight, commision some research on current immigrants, etc. There is no real urgency in making changes to the Law of Return - and anyway, I always suspect ulterior motives from our less than honest politicians. I'm sure there is more than meets the eye in this suddenly discovered emergency. We have far more urgent problems to deal with.

Here is a test for you Gabriela, name a democracy in the world that bars individuals from obtaining citizenship based solely on religious or ethnic background that you think Israel should emulate? And what exactly constitutes a quasi-Jew, anyone who converted to Judaism? And is anyone who is an Ashkenazi is a quasi-Jew as we know their ancestors were all converts and thus wouldn't the children of a quasi Jews to be quasi Jews themselves? We are failing at keeping a Jewish majority and until the diaspora are ready to come, we don't deserve to beat our enemies outright. On the other hand, we don't deserve to loose to them.
