Shimshon when the Torah was written there were no such things as buses so therefore there could not be anything written in it about women having to sit in the back of one! Also Why not the Men at the back and the women up front, after all a woman is frail and shouldn't have to walk to the back of the bus!
32. Degredation of Women
Roniet ,   Israel   (03.03.08)
Small minded intolerant people will say that Women are only to be seen in their"proper place" They assign us that place; they don't let us do it ourselves nor will they allow us avoice in that decision. They will not allow that we have ahead to think, and a heart to feel and a soul to aspire....You degrade us and then ask why we are degraded.... you shut our mouths and then ask why we don't speak. You try to shut us away from Torah learning and then ask why we don't know more! It is degrading to be forced to sit at the back of a bus, just ask Rosa Parks who couragously refused to sit at the back of the bus inAlabama 1955! '
33. 28...I'm not sure but you might be nuts...
(03.03.08)
34. 25...while I appreciate your disgust, you are not helping...
(03.03.08)
and if you are not helping you might be hurting. Sometimes how we express ourselves is as important as what we express...just food for thought
35. bus ride
tami ,   jax, florida   (03.03.08)
if it's not about demeaning women then why can't they choose left and right instead of front and back. Everyone knows what "sit in the back of the bus " means-not just Rosa parks.
36. I think this woman is wrong.
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (03.03.08)
There are many mixed buses she could have taken and not this especific one. I think that -specially in Israel -we must respect all Jews in the ways they wish to live.We should respect their wishes if we want them to respect ours. They are in their home as well as this woman is.One can not impose in the other their wills. We should love our brothers.I love my religious brothers and wish them all the best the same way I wish to a secular Jew.I wish them all to be happy in Israel and to love each other.
37. Ah,and by the way...
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (03.03.08)
It was a woman who asked me once to go to the back side of one bus because that was a bus especific for religious and she didn't seem unhappy or revolted, just the oposite. So there are many women who agree with the system, what should be respected.
38. harsh journey
noor ,   hyderabad - India   (03.03.08)
it is really very painful that a woman can not travel without fear in her own land. we should fight agianst the forceful implementation of rabbis dictates.
39. You go, girl!
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (03.03.08)
And to all of you writing from the US, I'd like to see one of you, whether ultra-orthodox, atheist or anything in between, ordering this old woman to the back, the front or the middle of any public conveyance. You'd be lucky, if I and most of the other riders only laughed you out of there. And if the sight of a normally attired woman brings on sinful thoughts, that's your problem. Stop by a peep show and do whatever or take a cold shower when you get home.
40. To #28
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (03.03.08)
According to old fables, Lilith was created on an equal basis with Adam. He, not god, was the one who got upset, when she refused to submit to his demand for sex. (Maybe she had a headache.) And if ancient men made her out to be a demon, well, what's the surprise in that? Surely you're not saying that omnipotent and omniscient god screwed up creating Lilith???
41. bus segregation
jo moor   (03.03.08)
Despicable religious autocracy. Egged = public company. They should buy their own buses (with their own sources seeing that they dont have time to work to earn a living..... and then have the chutzpa to dictate how other people's taxes are spent!) Sounds like Yasser and the boys from over the fence! Fanatics undermine everything from left or right irrespective if "what is left is right". Duven dont guven!
42. Well Bill Handel
Jacob Blues ,   New York City   (03.03.08)
Real rabbi's should have better things to do with their time than come up with narishkeit like the bus seating chart. Say perhaps teaching their followers how to show respect to grandparents on a city bus would be a good start. Maybe get them to figure out how to cook a meal might be a second.
43. 28# - whatever happened to Eve?
Connie ,   Virginia   (03.03.08)
I know you read and study alot but that sounded like something off the sci-fi channel. All mankind what affected by Adam and Eve when they disobeyed God. It's called our sinful, carnal, fallen nature. What the cure. Being born-again and filled with the Holy Spirit. Will we be sin free. no. Mankind will always have to contend with this sinful nature but the more time that is made for God and His Word, the more we are transformed into His likeness.
44. Bus Ride
Michael ,   usa   (03.03.08)
God bless you. This is why American Jews are losing faith in Israel. It is no longer --love thy fellow Jew ...The damn Haredim who have stolen our religion. Keep sitting in the front of the bus...and vote for the candidate who will not sell out to the fanatics for political gain.
45. To # 33 , be sure , she is NUTS
charles ,   petach tikva   (03.03.08)
46. Common Courtesy
Paul ,   London England   (03.03.08)
The "orthodox" man should have been ashamed even to ask. Common courtesy and respect for one's fellow citizen are not compatible with such religious bigotry. The simple reply, albeit none is called for, in such a situation is "nuts"!
47. A painful bus ride
Golan   (03.03.08)
It's time to send these Aatolias packing. They can't be real Jews , they certianly don't know anything about Jewishness. They act as the mullas of Iran or Hamas and its time to get rid of them
48. # 28 Tsk, tsk, Rivkah - you've been watching tele.
mother of four ,   Bnei Brak Israel   (03.03.08)
What would the Rabbis say to that.
49. We should expel these anti semites from
jason white ,   afula,israel   (03.03.08)
our Jewish Zionist land. There should be guards on the buses that will use maximum force against these primitives.
50. #8 - It's people like you
Chaya ,   Bat Yam, Israel   (03.03.08)
who drive me away from being religious!! If this is Judaism I want nothing to do with it!!
51. all red indicators flashing
B. S. Detector   (03.03.08)
The heroine is either not religious, not well mannered, an out of towner, or a figment of the editors imagination. There are bus lines well known to all locals as segregated buses. It is the local custom, and it is just plain boorishness to ignore, and push your way through it . There is no comfort issue between the front and the back, this is hogwash, and a perrenial subject in this rag. The thugs that challenge here are no less thuggish than she.
52. SCANDALOUS PRACTICE!
Tom ,   San Francisco (USA)   (03.03.08)
You must contact the free legal services (Reform, Conservative ones included) and ask them to support a law that makes it illegal to have such a practice in Israel. Otherwise, it will keep being done again and again! The Orthodox are very often a shame to G.od and to Judaism. Women are the most sacred being on earth because they give the gift of life and all of us were born from a woman and therefore a woman should feel valued and respected to the highest degree. A man speaking!
53. # 32 Roniet AMEN!!!
petra ,   usa   (03.03.08)
There would be no men if not for women. ROSA PARKS brought down the segregated south over this same mistreatment of both being black and a female. Perhaps women could unite in Israel and outnumbered the religious bigots on the bus? This sort of ignorance and hatred of women embarasses me all the way over here. Until these ill mannered "Rabbis' learn to act like more civilized gentlemen, I shall not visit Israel . Whatever happened to a gentleman offering a lady his seat? Such arrogant bafoons. This is the WORST advertisement for Israel yet.
54. what she should have done was
eliezer ,   jewrusalem   (03.03.08)
to be democratic and move her big ass to the back. Is this not a democratic country, and did not the majority of those who rode that bus want segragation? good so segregate, its democratic and stop being anti Jewish even though there are religious theives, there are also religious smucks and ladies like your sort.
55. #14 - What difference does it make???
Chaya ,   Bat Yam, Israel   (03.03.08)
Whether she was an Orthodox woman, a secular woman, an Arab woman!! They had no right to tell her to sit in the back of the bus!!!!!!! For my part, I will call her Rosa Parks!!! Everybody, call Egged and express your indignation at this!!!
56. The reason that it's the women that are
mother of four ,   Bnei Brak Israel   (03.03.08)
supposed to go to the back of the bus is so that the weak-willed are not unwillingly compelled to have lascivious thoughts induced by the involuntary view of the backs of our (bewigged) heads. Though how these poor men manage to control themselves as we pass by their seats on our way to the back I really can't figure out. Of course really it's only a power trip. But we can't possibly admit that one can we?
57. to # 17
Moshe ,   Jerusalem   (03.03.08)
Well done to this wonderful lady. If the men did not want to sit together then they should have done the most gentlemen thing to do and sit at the back of the bus but these men are no gentleman to humilities the woman in such a way which is forbidden in Jewish Law. As far as I know men and women don't sit togther for the purpose of praying and when ones wife is in Nider having her period but there is no reason not to sit next to a stranger. And as for women giving Torah study, I am blessed to have heard many women giving excellent talks in Torah.
58. Andras! She is religious in an other way
Euriel ,   Budapest, Hungary   (03.04.08)
Andras! Why do you think she is not religious? She is probabely not ultra-ortodox, believes that women and men are equal creatures in the eyes of haShem... Maybe she belongs to an other stream of Judaism... Jewish pluralism has always existed, even in Talmudic times! Let her be religious and protest against ultra-ortodox apartheid if she thinks this kind of humilation is unacceptable!
59. Good idea petrola #53-Don't come to Israel!
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (03.04.08)
We don't need more antisemits disguised as Jews lovers.Stay away you nabatean!
60. Taliban Jews
guy ,   los angeles   (03.04.08)
Shameful behavior on the part of the men who apparently would feel more comfortable living with the Taliban...
