31. Friend of thruth and peace
Hanne Kj Yndestad ,   Sweden   (11.11.08)
I will try and send the whole speach of a jewish authorwho visited Sweden a year ago: Challenges and opportunities for the Palestinian Arabs in Israel DATE: 2007-05-11 - It is about the occupation of the Palestinian Arab country and culture and the destruction of a people's identity. The issue of the Palestinian Arab situation in Israel noted too infrequently, and an important explanation is the demonization of Israel Critics often have to endure. It said Susan Nathan, author of the book "The other side of Israel", who was visiting Sweden for at the invitation of the Palm Center to talk about her latest book and talk about the situation of Palestinian Arabs in Israel.
32. Not so much
Per Amdreas   (11.11.08)
In the book Støre writes that some stores in Hebron are "marked" like other stores have been marked through history. So he does not explicitly mention Nazi-Germany, and this article should get that straight. Interestingly, Støre also uses his book to call for US leadership in the world. He claims that he "loves" the United States and to a large extent excuses their post 9/11 behaviour. So it is flatly wrong to say that Støre is simply a mouthpiece for Hamas.
33. ...the speach
Hanne Kj Yndestad ,   Sweden   (11.11.08)
Self left her life in London as counselors and exercised its right as a Jewish residence in Israel. But awareness of the deeply unjust treatment of the Arab population made her own move to Tamra, an Arab village, and by his own examples show that Jews and Arabs can live side by side. The seminar was initiated by the Palm Center Secretary Viola Pine Bjelke, who pointed out the courage required by Susan Nathan in efforts to highlight the Palestinian people's vulnerability in Israel. - A work by which she not only gave a voice to a marginalized group, but also highlighted a much-forgotten problem, said Viola Furbjelke. Susan Nathan made clear initially that her speech would not act on the situation in the occupied territories, the West Bank and Gaza. She wanted instead to talk about the reality that the Palestinian Arabs in Israel are forced to live in. - Knowledge of the exact relationship between the state and the Palestinian people rarely discussed outside of Israel and has only recently become an increasingly urgent topic of discussion in Israel, said Susan Nathan. She also suggested that the specific relationship is directly linked to the state of Israel was founded in light of the idea of ethnic exclusivity. As a result, the Israeli government policy directly or indirectly sought to evict its Arab citizens. - The Palestinian citizens now living in Israel represents the remainder of the Arabs who had to flee in connection with the establishment of the State of Israel, and as such consigned to a subordinate status in Israeli society. State policy towards the Arab citizens are an extreme structural discrimination, national oppression, continuous landkonfiskeringar, an unequal budget and resources, discrimination in terms of rights and a constant threat of the movement, told Susan Nathan. She gave a picture of the current situation in Israel regarding the Arab minority's challenges and opportunities for greater equality. - The atmosphere in Israel is currently very tense. Since 1948, the Palestinians have become a minority in their historic homeland.
34. ...speach
Hanne Kj Yndestad ,   Sweden   (11.11.08)
The Jewish majority has a total lack of understanding of the collective trauma and humiliation that every Palestinian knows in relation to Palestine, the erosion of memories, culture and rights. At the same time, not most of the new generation of Palestinians to be second class citizens, said Susan Nathan. - Israel can not be seen as a democracy, there is a etnokrati. It is a system that offers only partial equality for minority and restrict its full access in politics, society, economy and media. Consequently, it is not nationality, not ethnicity, which is the key to the allocation of resources and power, she said. Groundbreaking document As for the Palestinian Arabs' own initiative and the work she wanted to emphasize, however, that she considered to be positive trends in development. - December 2006 published a groundbreaking paper by the National Committee for the Heads of Arab Local Authorities in Israel. Its title is "The Future Vision of the Palestinian arabs in Israel" and is an important starting point for a dialogue with the Jewish state. We see a new era of self-recognition which requires a clear vision of the future, a crystallization of collective identity and social and political agenda as articulated by the minority of the minority. The document has been received very negatively by the Israeli government which has seen it as a declaration of war and believe that the timing is bad in light of the Lebanon war. The negative response, however, is fully in line with the State of Israel's reluctance to integrate the Palestinian Arabs in a way that would allow for true equality, said Susan Nathan. She also made in her speech to a comprehensive description of what the grounds for discrimination in Israeli society looks like. - The foundation is the expropriation of land. In accordance with the law, is owned 93% of Israeli land of the Jewish National Fund, an organization in accordance with its Charter reserve land for agriculture based on jew workforce. This has resulted in the Arab minority, which accounts for 20.5% of the population owns only 3% of the land. The Palestinian people's existence is also of great inequality in terms of budget, which permeates every aspect of life, housing, health, education, infrastructure, the right to culture and the representation of Arabic as the second national language. Nor extends financial assistance and support from the main NGO's to the Arab societies, she said.
35. End of speach:
Hanne Kj Yndestad ,   Sweden   (11.11.08)
Susan Nathan returned finally to talk about the document, "The Future Vision of the Palestinian arabs in Israel", on its importance in the fight against discrimination against the Palestinian Arabs in Israel but also about the backlash it has given rise to. - There is an atmosphere of distrust, and many of the Palestinian Arabs as strangers in their own homeland. The hysteria that has broken out among Jewish elites as a result of the publication of the document is hardly surprising. Some say that it will cause the Palestinian Arabs self-inflicted injury. The reason is that Jews consider Arab demands for equality and recognition as a national minority with the right to institutional autonomy in areas such as education, culture and religion, as a threat to Israel's Jewish specificity, said Susan Nathan. - The document calls for the Palestinian Arabs in Israel in a legitimate and reasonable manner that the state seriously look at the issue of collective national rights, the economic situation and development of a proper and sustainable development, strategic planning and educational vision, the Palestinian culture and Religious issues, along with institutional and public policy efforts, finished Susan Nathan. Similarities with South Africa Efter anförandet ställde Viola Furubjelke en fråga om hur Susan Nathans uppväxt i Sydafrika påverkat henne. - There are, after all, the similarities between the South African apartheid system and structural discrimination that affects the Palestinian population in Israel, said Viola Pine Bjelke. Susan Nathan acknowledged that there were similarities but said that while the Israeli system can not be likened to apartheid as in the case of South Africa. - The structural discrimination in the Israeli system is more a function of law and ethnic discrimination is never explicitly stated in the legislation. This also allows Israel to be projecting itself as the only democracy in the Middle East, "she said. - It is also interesting that many South African Jews, including myself, were deeply involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. At the same time, it has among many of these also been difficult to see, or acknowledge, the obvious similarities between the South African apartheid and Israel's relationship with the Palestinian Arab population, she said. One clear reason may be the psychological and emotional component / aspect of the Zionist ideology, which porträtterar the Jewish people's suffering as unique and fomenting an offering mentality, continued Susan Nathan. Viola Pine Bjelke told me about Palm Center dedication and work with peace groups in Israel and was wondering if Susan Nathan had an idea of how they responded to her work. - The Israeli peace movement does not exist in the sense that it still abides by the Zionist idea of a jew state. The starting point of argument is always the idea of equality, but unfortunately, there is still limited by the dream of an ethnically coherent state, said Susan Nathan. From the audience raised the question of whether Israel's treatment of the Arab minority have created a breeding ground for Islamist movements. - Yes, I see it directly as a response to the marginalization of many Palestinian Arabs feel. It is in many cases that we seek self, dignity and identity in the context of living in a state that does not treat an egalitarian, said Susan Nathan. - I am not optimistic. Moreover, I must say that I personally think more of a one-state solution. My vision is based on Israel and Palestine to create a Middle East Union. It is the only way forward, a democratic and secular state where Jews and Arabs live together, finished Susan Nathan.
36. Never mind Støre
SlaveToThePaycheck ,   Oslo, Norway   (11.11.08)
People shouldn't pay to much attention to Støres points of view in any matter. When the muslims were burning flags and embassies to protest against the printing of some drawings of the prophet Muhammed in Norwegian and Danish newspapers, Mr. Støre went to the arab countries and excused on Norways behalf because we used our right to print these drawings in our newspapers. He excused because we used our freedom of speech! He is a donkey.
37. comments to tahl
ida ,   oslo, norway   (11.11.08)
Sorry Tahl, We hear what you say, we read what you write. We read your papers too (just know), But we also SEE what Israel, as other countries, is doing. In a small, small global world, everybody have to be responsible for human rights. We can't act as an ostrich as you beg us to. Sorry, that to naive. And don't say the norwegian, our FM Støre least of all, are uneducated. Read the history, Tahl, read the history. Good luck.
38. israel
W. von Miese ,   norway   (11.11.08)
Anti-semittism is treating ALL Semittes differently to others. That also means Arabs which belong to Semittes. To me, as seen in both Gaza and the West-Bank, Israeli government followed by bullying settlers, seems to treat Palestinians exactly the same way Jews were treated by the Germans. Evil and dicreminating behaviour seems to be the the god-imitative authoritarian behaviour of states proclaiming that they own the right belief-system, superior to everyone else. Then the excluding acts comes as no surprise. Fascist behaviour starts at home and in religiuos and political tribes, where dogmas have ended intellectual reasoning.

>UNLESS HE ISSUES A FULL APOLOGY IN PUBLIC. yOU KNOW THERE WAS NO SUCH COMMENT ABOUT GAS CHAMBERS WRITTEN OR THE LEFTISTS AND YNET WOULD HAVE ALREADY SHOWN IT. < You sound exactly like a Moslem fundamentalist here yourself!
40. Støre can read english
Oyvind ,   Norway   (11.11.08)
Støre reported graffiti that he saw, written in English. Anyone should feel uncomfortable when reading messages like "gas the arabs". It is obvious that one starts to associate to nazist thought. An outside observer cannot of course prove who wrote it, but should it not be removed?
41. JUSTICE for Jews. Return ALL Stolen Jewish Land & Property
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (11.11.08)
The inalienable rights of Jews to the Biblical heartland must not be violated! No one is demanding Muslims surrender THEIR top religious areas of Mecca and Medina! In 1948, Egypt invaded Gaza, ethnically cleansing all Jews and in 1948, Jordan invaded Judea, Samaria and east Jerusalem, ethnically cleansing all Jews. In violent opposition to G-D, Muslim Jordan destroyed 58 synagogues in Jerusalem. The jihad is against the Holy One. When Israel won the Arab war of aggression in 1967, Jews returned to the areas of their ancestral homeland they had been ethnically cleansed from for 19 years. Anti-Israel propaganda DECEITFULLY calls Jews' legitimate return "occupation". Jews have had a continuous presence in physical and spiritual homeland Israel for 4000 years. Jewish ownership of the land, homes and buildings stolen from the Jews in the 1948 Islamic invasion must be restored!
42. Hanne Kj Arabs Declared Refugees After ONLY 2 YEARS in Pales
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (11.11.08)
Arabs first started calling themselves "Palestinians" in 1967. Egyptian Arafat was the first leader of this new people. Before 1948, Jews were known as the Palestinians. The Jewish newspaper, the Jerusalem Post was called the Palestine Post. The Jewish-founded electric company was Palestine Electric. The Palestinian Symphony Orchestra was all Jewish. During World War II, the British army had a Palestinian Brigade made up entirely of Jewish volunteers. After Jews migrated to Palestine in significant numbers in the late 1800s and miraculously transformed desert and swamps into rich, agricultural land, Arabs came in large numbers from Arab countries for jobs from Jews. The fact that the overwhelming majority of Arabs resided only briefly in Palestine is attested to by a one-time special UN decree: that any Arab who had resided in Palestine FOR ONLY TWO YEARS BEFORE 1948, and then left, would be considered a refugee and so would his descendants! In all of history, people were NEVER regarded as refugees if they had resided in a country for ONLY two years because they were clearly CITIZENS of OTHER COUNTRIES!
43. and what seems to be the problem?
Ina ,   oslo, Norway   (11.11.08)
I am very proud to have such an honest and enlightend foreign prime minister as Støre. What is the problem with these statements? Is there no Media freedom in Israel? Why shouldnt he react after seeing what he saw in Hebron? everyone with a heart would have reacted the same way, and made up the same thoughts as Støre did.
44. Norwegians don't take criticism well
adam ,   Oxford, UK   (11.11.08)
I see the norwegians on this thread are very upset. It would be interesting to see how they react if they subjected to the constant vilification which they throw at Israel. Who cares what one piece of graffiti says? Is it typical? No. One can always find an exception - it proves nothing. Perhaps these concerned Norwegians should look at the constant anti-semitism (Jew hatred, for the less educated) in the Arab world, in all types of media. Remember, Norway was the country which established relations with Hamas, the terrorist group which openly advocates the extermination of every Jew on earth (read its charter). What a disgrace!
45. Why are you so shocked
John ,   Fr.   (11.11.08)
Can someone explain why this is a shocking news? Why does it hurt so much. Is it because Støre hits a nerve? Please give me a calm explanation and please do not shoot back without explanation on why you cant see the link, or why it is so shocking...
46. Logically you should then leave the space you live in
Hanne Kj Yndestad ,   Sweden   (11.11.08)
for the indians who owned your land.... And Sweden would be the target for millions of swedes whose great grandparents left during poor times for the America....and all the borders would have to be drawn by the incoming swedes, and the others would have to move and abide.... No, the map in my school called the country Palestine, and we learned it was the country of several nations, among them arabs and jews. They lived there side by side since the time of the old Bibletexts and before. This we learned, how come you don´t know? No offence, but why not read Susan Nathans book?
47. ynetnews, WHO are your sources?
Sigurd ,   Trondheim, Norway   (11.11.08)
When writing such a twisted news article, please mention where your twisted news come from. "A norwegian news agency" could be anything. The spokesperson Yossi Levy is right that this is not what Støre said, it is what ynetnews wanted Støre to have said, to anger Israeli people. And seen from the comments on this article, ynetnews has done a great job to anger Israeli people.
48. Leave the land you are living in, Linda,
Hanne Kj Yndestad ,   Sweden   (11.11.08)
back to the indians, that will be the only logic consequence of your ideas. And it would have to be lots on an exoduses to countries their great great grandparents left for hunger and hardship. Swedes living here today might have to move to let the millions of ancesters from America take over Sweden, their homeland.... Something is very wrong here. The map in my classroom many years ago had Palestine on it, no Israel. We learned that Israel was one of many groups of people that lived there side by side since before the writing of the older books in the Bible. By the way, I honestly think much struggle come with the idea of owning land, an idea the indians will not share. Aggression comes with so called belongings and protecting what you believe is yours. My grandmother said: All we have got belongs to the Lord, all is borrowed. And that is, I believe the plain truth.

SlaveToThePaycheck ,   Oslo, Norway   (11.11.08)
All the norwegian newspapers that has covered this story today, has had almost identical reports from Norsk Telegram Byrå (NTB - whose english name is Norwegian News Agency). And you probably came to Ynet via the link in Aftenposten, which also quotes NTB in their article. Still you can't figure out where Ynet gets their info from? So, this "twisted story" (as you refer to it), comes from our own NTB, and Ynet has translated the article. With your comments here on Ynet, you have done a great job making Norwegians look like morons.
50. Read Joan Peters's book :
Charles ,   P. Tikva , Israel   (11.11.08)
From time immemorial . Now comparing the situation of the "palestinians" to this of the Jews during WWII is at least indecent . Israel's policy is not to MURDER them , as was the nazi policy towards the Jews . I don't think that the goal of the black people in South Africa was to kill all the whites , but they had apartheid . Comparing this to the situation of Israeli Arabs is far of being correct . They have the same political rights , can sit where they want in any public transport , and so on . That they are seen as suspicious , yes , everyone of them could be one of the territories unther their own rule , not an Israeli one . And Israeli Arabs have also murdered Israeli Jews . Yes , their life is not easy , but to be victim of suicide bombers is worse .
51. The twist in the story
(11.11.08)
comes from the Ynet, even in the NTB article Mr Paycheckslave referres to. In Aftenposten they quote the headlines of Ynet, the rest is history.
52. Good night to everybody
Hanne Kj Yndestad ,   Sweden   (11.11.08)
no matter race or nation! We live the same hours, ask for the same respect and peace, room for our lives and no more trouble. Is that too much to ask for? I don´t think so. We can do better tomorrow!
53. no
kris   (11.12.08)
it was in english...
54. Hanne in Sweden
Adam ,   Oxford, UK   (11.12.08)
When did you go to school? Israel has been a sovereign nation since 1948. Why do your maps not mention this? And for your information, there has never, ever, at any time in history, been a country called palestine. Obviously history and geography are not taught well in sweden.
55. "Don't meddle in our business"??!!!
kristin ,   oslo, norway   (11.12.08)
to Tahl Like we didn't have the right to meddle with the issues of germany in 1939? This is not a domestic issue, or like you put it; a privete quarrel between parts! We're talking violation of human rights here (like the people of Tibet as you brought in to this), people loosing their homes, family and lives. And no-one is saying that the israelis have all the blame for loss of human lives on both sides. But it is the israeli state that illegally occupies palestinian grounds. If the UN (including the norwegian general secretay) hadn't meddled in 1949, the jewish people wouldn't have a country at all... The state of israel should leave palestinian grounds alone.
56. Kristin
Adam ,   Oxford, UK   (11.12.08)
1. When did Judea and Samaria become "Palestinian" as you put it? 2. These areas have an Israeli presence because of the genocidal war launched by the Arab states against the Jews. The Arabs lost. If you think israel should return them to those who would gladly exterminate the Jews of the world (read the charters of Hamas and Hizbollah), do you also think Poland should return Prussia to Germany? If not, why not? 3. Israel would exist without Norway. Sorry to disappoint you.
57. Adam, Palestine were the name of the country
Hanne Kj Yndestad ,   Sweden   (11.12.08)
on all the maps at my school. They were old, since before the war, you see. Here´s some info from Wikipedia: The first historically known people in Palestine, the Palestinian indigenous people known as Canaanites who was a city-centered people (and many of today's major cities in the region stems from the time). During the latter part of the second millennium before Christ trängdes their civilization away by the Philistines (Hebrew pelishtim) - from which the Romans gave Palestine its new name - and the Hebrews, who also came to absorb more kanaanéiska cultural features. A period of krigståg began, and only about 1000 BC Hebrews King David could establish a Hebrew large kingdom in the region, however, soon came to be divided into two, northern kingdom of Israel and Judah sydriket. Northern Empire were soon to become a assyriskt lydrike, and the northern tribes assimilated probably. This has given rise to legends of the lost tribes. In 586 BC conquered the Babylon King Nebuchadnezzar both the Assyrian empire and sydriket including Jerusalem included. Nebuchadnezzar displacing the Jews to Babylon. After the Persian king Cyrus the Great conquering of Babylon 559 BC (who let the Jews return to Jerusalem and the surrounding area) belonged to Palestine, the Persian empire up to 330 BC, when Alexander the Great made to the master of the Mediterranean world, to later move into the Roman empire. In 70 AD, after a Jewish revolt, ordered the Roman commander in Palestine, Titus, the destruction of Jerusalem. After yet another Jewish revolt is 135 amended the Roman emperor Hadrian name of the Roman province of Syrian Jude to the Syrian Palestine, and many Jews moved. During the 600 - and 700-century as the area was incorporated in the Muslim culture, under the caliph's rule. That began a period of 1300 years when Palestine was an integral part of the Arab cultural world. Such stability is unique in Palestinian history. The area was divided eventually into five districts, under the generic name Jund Palestine.
58. Kristin, part 2
Adam ,   Oxford, UK   (11.12.08)
perhaps you should look at Norway's disgusting policy of establishing relations with Hamas (a neonazi islamofascist organization which calls for the extermination of ALL Jews) and also your pathetic whaling policy.
59. ida (37) & kristin (55)
Tahl ,   Israel   (11.12.08)
As I said, your country is not the moral compass of the world, and you have absolutely no moral grounds to preach and lecture to Israel what to do, in this holier-than-thou mentality that you have. Just as we don't stick our nose in your businesses, and lecture you about your ruthless whale hunting, for one example. I know your intentions may be good, but you are duped by your politicians and your media, who spread all this disinformation, exaggerations, misrepresentations, and twisted stories about this conflict, without getting the whole picture. When Kristin states sentences like "violation of human rights", or "it is the israeli state that illegally occupies palestinian grounds" as alleged facts, without bringing up any violations from the other side - that is a good example of how this disinformation permeates to your minds, making you impartial observers. With so many slanted reports, no wonder Israel's image in your country is so bad. But you know, reality is more complex than black and white. Kristin - indeed, I don't recall your country meddling with Germany's issues in 1939, to save Jews, on the contrary. So if I were you, I would use better judgment than to bring up this particular example. Anyway, to sum things up: This IS a domestic issue, we DO strive for peace (despite Palestinian terror), your information about this conflict is incomplete, we don't need your help, you have no moral grounds to lecture to us anyway. The Oslo accords are a very painful proof of what happens when Norway (and Europe in general) "helps" the Middle East. So thank you for your kind efforts, I know you mean well, but we prefer to take care of things by ourselves, with better results for all. Shalom.
60. #59 Tahl
SlaveToThePaycheck ,   Oslo, Norway   (11.12.08)
You're totally right. The Norwegian media behaves like a spokesperson for Pallywood inc. The only thing you see in print is anti-Israeli artices, which focuses on the Arabs as the poor victims of Israeli aggression. Normally the articles are produced by Pallywood or your B'Tselem, and NEVER is a critical question asked, or facts checked before it's printed. For example in the Muhammed Al Dura case: HUGE headlines! Lots of cover in the press! NO questions asked, NO facts checked! And then, when the whole thing turns out to be just another fake Pallywood production: A tiny little mentioning in one of the newspapers. No headlines, no discussions, no nothing. Tahl, you must understand that Norwegians always support the underdog, the weakest in a conflict (Israel has better military resources, so they are stronger than the Arabs). It doesn't matter for a Norwegian who is right, or who is wrong. The only thing that matters is who is weakest. And they measure this by counting the dead. In a discussion between Norwegians on Israel - Arabs, someone always comes with the argument that Israelis don't die as often as Arabs - to prove that then the Arabs must be right. And about the ww2: As a matter of fact the Norwegian people helped the Nazis to gather all the Jews in the country, so that they could be sent off to deathcamps.
