Israel never said anything about toppling Hamas or retrieving their kidnapped soldier, during the current war. The current conflict started for one reason only. Hamas ended the ceasefire and fired rockets at Israel. Now Hamas has been forced to declare a ceasefire, with Israel still inside Gaza. Hamas lost.

The only miltary "victrories" are those concluded by complete total unconditional surrender. In U.S. history the only wars ending in this fashion were our native Indian wars, the U.S. Civil War, the WWII against Germany and Japan. All of these "victories" required sustained and intentional public bombings to eliminate contining public support of the war efforts. Dresden and Berlin did not bomb themselves anymore than did Hiroshima or Nagasagi. All were deliberate intentional actions that brought forth the desired effect. Israel didn't win because it couldn't achieve its military goals of eliminating Hamas and its rocket attacks and Hamas didn't win because it couldn't fight. Or otherwise, Israel and Hamas both won and the victory was over the innocent civilians that died. The unarmed men, women and children were the actual losers!!!!

With victories like this, I wonder what a loss would look like. Actually, I know what it would look like -- it would look like Israel showing none of the restraint that it did in the name of humanitarianism and world opinion (which didn't help in that regard anyway) -- they could have bombed the entire grid of Gaza and obliterated it.
