This business of "lost pride" and macho reassertion is just what has been holding the Palestinians back from following their own interests in achieving peace with Israel. When we start making "pride" a factor in what we do politically we are buying into the same detachment from real considerations that has done them in. Thinking - rather than feeling with our egos - is the only way to solve our dilemmas. And by the way - no one has ever "lost pride" in the IDF. Our soldiers have always been heroes. It's the sometimes-idiots at the top of the command chain (need I mention our former chief of staff?) who have made the mistakes. No one has ever put down the soldiers of the real IDF.

Absolutely. Thanks to all the soldiers, pilots and naval forces who stopped the rockets and risked their lives. Yes, Hanoch Daum is right to emphasise that the biggest risk is to go on foot as the soldiers did and fight the enemy. For 8 years Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the PRC believed that they could fire rockets into Israeli towns and all they had to worry about was a very limited response by Israel which was trying to avoid 'widening' the conflict. Finally that strategy failed when Hamas rejected a renewal of the 6 month truce and launched even more rockets,even further into Israel confident that they had little to fear. Yes, the world's sympathy is always with the Palestinians whose declared goal is to destroy Israel. That is the reality we have to accept. But the goverment declared that 'Jew-hunting season was now over never to be renewed' . The UN and Europe want to put Israel back in the ghetto and to say how and when we can, if ever, defend ourselves. That is the end of sovreignty. Thanks again to the IDF!

Firstly, the muslims Israel is fighting are not the same as those of Spain. Secondly, Jews explicitly do not have equal status under Islam and never have had so. All they had was relatively better status than their treatment under Christians at the time. As for your original post, Hamas had copious weaponry but they were either too cowardly/too poor at soldiering to fight. They prefered to hide amongst civilians - by the way they proudly state they do this, this is not some Israeli claim - and fire rockets SOLELY at Israeli civilians. But given your utter ignorance, i guess we can't expect any better.

IDF did magnificently, led by Ashkenazi and allowed to do so by the political leadership. The discovery of the gas field off the coast was a nice way to end it. While we mourn for the loss of innocent lives, this was truly a just war, brilliantly fought by IDF. In the future, this Gaza war will be seen as the first major global blow against Iran and the Islamists, that will eventually result in Islamist destruction and a secure, peaceful Israel.
