31. This is Kosher
vered ,   israel   (02.11.09)
The Bible literally says, "Do not cook a kid in its' mother's milk". Chickens do not breastfeed their babies, and chickens are not the babies of cows or goats. By the same token, one is allowed to mix milk with fish. Chickens aren't even mammals!
32. Kosher by Rabbinic Standards??
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (02.11.09)
How about mayo on a pastrami sandwich? Makes one ill to even think of it. But then, you can always put butter and milk on potatoes and mash 'em up with a nice piece of steak. Great meal, not kosher still great. By the way, rabbinic Judaism is not Judaism, merely whatever the rabbis happen to think on any particular moment what Judaism could or should be. The food on EL AL is not considered kosher by certain travelers. Yet, when those self same people travel on another airline, they order "kosher" food and it becomes "kosher" enough for them to devour. Seems that there is more than one definition of "kosher".
33. Chickens don't bear milk - CUT THE CRAP!
5th generation ,   Israel   (02.11.09)
This corruption of Leviticus was the result of schmucks bringing mystery meat into Israel, and continues to be enforced in modern times by ignorant, bored, less-than-useful kashrut rabbis who love to incite like any good Islamist. Since you charge so G"D much to supervise meat, WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? NOT DOING YOUR DAY JOB?
34. to Jimmy 25 & #23
Wise Jewish Locavore   (02.11.09)
Actually, pigs are biologically fairly similar to humans - which is one reason that they are so often used in organ transplant research, etc. Even their pink and brown skin color is similar to ours. I and many others agree with #23 that the guidelines of kashrut often end up supporting sustainable ecology, which also includes honoring the "sparks" that exist in all things, certainly in all beings, and maintaining a healthy, habitable environment -- and this from someone who doesn't keep kosher but more and more sees the wisdom in eco-kosher guidelines.
35. Egg (baby) cooked in/with (mother) Chicken - how's that okay
G-d'sCommonSense ,   BetterThanRandomRebi   (02.11.09)
Makes 100% no sense that, to rabbis, it's a scandal to cook chicken in cow, sheep, goat, giraffe milk; but considered perfectly okay to baste a hen with egg yolks or whites, to eat chicken egg-drop soup, or make hamim/cholent with chicken, chicken broth, and eggs. I trust the spark of G-d within me, more than some arbitrary and nonsensical rabbic (human) decision, and that little light o'mine says if you can eat duck eggs with duck breast, chicken stuffed with eggs, caviar (fish eggs) with lox or whitefish, then poultry must be parve, not fleshic. And fish do have blood, by the way --- ask any fishmonger (or walk around a wholesale fish market where fresh-caught fish are butchered).
36. #19 - observer, Where in the Tora...
Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (02.11.09)
Where in the Tora DID Moshe eat dairy & meat?
37. Dont get it
Struggling ,   NZ   (02.11.09)
Can someone explain please, feel free to email me directly how chicken is meat? its poultry plus we dont have goats milk with meat from the same animal but have chicken with eggs from it. Sorry I just dont understand where the line is drawn
38. Habayit shelanu - good name for a new political party
Kent ,   NYC   (02.11.09)
We could probably use 3 or 4 more parties, there are so few at present
39. #36 thank you, that's exactly what I meant to
observer   (02.11.09)
40. #37 but u can eat diary & fish meat after kashrut slaughter
observer   (02.11.09)
41. There IS an old rabbinic opinion that poultry is parve
It's true ,   NY   (02.12.09)
42. The Kosher Laws Are Advisery, Not in Stone
Dav Lev ,   Burbank. CAUSA   (02.12.09)
Ultra-Orthodox don't go into the Israeli army. The male spouses don't work, except at creating more Haredi. In the USA, Mrs. Madoff, author of a kosher book, just stole 20m before her husband's crime was revealed (50b ponzie scam). Jack Abramoff, with his fidora, is eating kosher food in prison for a few years, after gauging millions from the US indians. I am a proud Jew that is not per se kosher..even though I do avoid eating meat and milk. Jews should focus on more meaningful aspects of Judaism..and get away from the trivial, meaningless kosher laws. 90% of Diaspora Jews are NOT KOSHER.
43. 41 - Hard to tell if it's a sin or not?
israeli   (02.12.09)
Either eating poultry with dairy is a sin against God and Jewish identity, or it is perfectly fine. I like the diversity of though within Judaism, as if the Rabbis can agree on much of anything. Hard to believe guys like that and trust what they say when you can find an opinion you like if you only look around.
44. Wow.. there are still people observing these, that's funny.

45. Boiling a calf in his mother's milk is forbidden
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.13.09)
So , if you take it literrally , you could boil a calf in milk that is NOT from his mother ?
46. They don't have proofreaders?
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (02.16.09)
47. Chicken and noodles with feta
Josephine Bacon ,   London, England   (02.17.09)
It is obvious what really happened. The Afikim Advertising company simply pinched the recipe from somewhere else and it was translated into Hebrew by someone who knows little or nothing about food, probably doesn't even know what feta is. But it makes a very funny story! Now if they had suggested chicken with bacon....
48. Josephine # 47
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (02.17.09)
If they had suggested chicken with bacon ....you would not be here to write it
