61. S Judah , Halachic Rule ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (06.26.09)
This Rav Shermann annulated thousands of conversions made by rav Druckmann . Was he following Halachah ? Did Rav Druckmann NOT follow Halachah ? Yes the Israeli High court can judge in all problems occuring in My country . Be they secular or religious , they are the Supreme authority . And is Halachah always correct ? You certainly know what i think about the Halachic Jew , the past Bishop of Paris , Mgr Lustiger .

we are not talking about a piece of meat here- we are talking about people whose lives have been drastically altered, if not destroyed. Your health Minister is a held by a Rabbi, is he not? So are many other posts...are they not qualified? You seem to equate secular and civil with stupidity and ignorance. There are many scholars and academics that could very well decide if a convert is sincere- as I see it- the Rabbis, trained in Halacha are not doing such a hot job either if things like this can happen. Yes it is a religious issue, but there seems to be some discrepancy as to how this is interpreted- . One Rabbi says one thing, another says another- if they cannot come to an agreement - have you given any thought to the people involved? Oh ya, it was just another woman... ? How about the thousands of converts that are now neither Jewish nor anything else? Is another rabbi going to overrule R. Sherman's decision next week and reinstate all those poor people again? Why not? What is stopping them? Do you still think the religious leaders are competent? I admire your faith and blind trust in religious leadership- but with a secular or civil court, provided they are honest people who cannot be bribed- there could be, should be clear rules- . Nobody is trying to take it away from you- but at least make sure the people in charge of conversions etc. are competent and honest- THAT is what we are arguing about here. You simply cannot play with people's lives and souls- the rabbis involved are playing God- and that is WRONG! Get it together! Shabbat Shalom!
63. S Judah, the issue is even more complicated than halachic vs
David Turner ,   Richmond   (06.26.09)
secular. As you can see in the present situation, all three of the primary actors in this drama are presumable halachic authorities, yet disagree. Put another way, Halacha is a matter of understanding and interpretation, malleable and changes with historical context. And even by individuals at any give time. There is no such thing as a universal Halacha. Never was. So when one such “authority” asserts that another, as in the matter of conversions, one should be wary of the motives of the challenger when his target is the authority of the current and long-time head of the Court, himself highly regarded scholar and authority. What might the motives of the insurgent be? Perhaps he truly believes Rabbi Druckman a “Zionist,” thereby condemning man and conversion under his tenure as head of the conversion court void. But that only raises the question, what make’s Sherman the final arbiter in what is halachic? Perhaps Sherman sees the conversion issue a vehicle for him to replace Rabbi Druckman. OK, so Sherman is ambitious. But at the cost of so much misery for so many lawful converts and loyal Israelis? Where is the heart and soul of Sherman? And by the way, by openly challenging the authority of the conversion court Sherman has thrown into question, and contributed to the destruction of the court, and created a rift in Israel between the anti-Zionist haredim and the rest of the country. And this rift continues today in other areas of Israeli society, as in a Shabbat parking lot for Jerusalem. As to why the secular Supreme Court has authority, it weighed in on the conversion controversy precisely because Sherman violated the rights of thousands of Israeli citizens lawfully converted by the Conversion Court, the legal instrument of the Government of Israel authorized to perform conversions. Sherman’s actions were unlawful.
64. mamzerim
mark ,   jerusalem   (07.02.09)
a mamzer cannot entire the jewish community for ten generations. it is highly probably that one of rabbi sherman's ancestors was a mazer. where does that leave rabbi sherman? oh well. maybe he should look in the mirror! here is the arithmatic. 2 to the ninth power equals 512. highly probable that one of rabbi sherman's ancestors was either raped by a cossak or involved in an illicit relationship.
65. conversion and quality of converts
menorah ,   golus   (07.25.10)
Jews have only one law: Halakha It is the duty of our Rabbis to ensure that any convert goes through a strict Halakha process and do not create "artificial" jews who are not jews. The person who really desires to join the Jewish people for spiritual purposes would never accept a false conversion: in the really of his being that person would stay outside Am Israel . And it is the duty of Rabbis not to allow such kind of trompery on Am Israel.
