34. Israels leaders know but dont even want to make it an issue
zionist forever   (07.10.09)
Nobody ever remembers the losses of the jewish refugees. Even Israels own leaders never bothers with them they just sit with the Americans and discuss what we will do to solve the palestinian refugee issue and how they can be economicly compensayed via an international fund if they gave up right of return demands. The only PM who has on the record told the US that jewish refugees must also be compensated is Arik Sharon. Rabin & Peres, Bibi, Barak, Olmert. All these people who have had detailed peace process talks in the past have never been interested in the jews. The man who wouldn't talk said jews deserve something as well. The Iraqi president warned his parliament against demanding compensation for the bombed nuclear reactor because Israel had threatened to ask for compensation for jewish refugees if they did. So the Israeli government is saying we wont ask you to compensate the jews. Everybody knows in Israel, the arabs & the west know there are jewish refugees out there deserving compensation but non of them not even Israel have no plans to try and get money for anybody but palestinians and Israel even uses the fact we wont ask for money as aa bargining chip to avoid compensationg Iraq for the destruction of their nuclear reactor. I DARE BIBI TO MENTION THE JEWISH REFUGEES TO OBAMA AND TRY GET THEM COMPENSATION. The jews have had one nakba and now if Obama gets things his way there will be a second because by the time he is finished with Israel after giving to the muslims at the expense of the jews. All that will mean all thats left of Israel will be the 6 million jewish refugees from the state they no longer have.
35. No 23. Antisemites denying Jewish Suffering
EgyptJewRefugee ,   Geneva, Switzerland   (07.10.09)
No 23. As usual the antisemites lie and deny Jewish suffering.
36. Our enemies say we left because we wanted to
IraqiJew ,   London, UK   (07.10.09)
We the Jewish refugees of Arab lands must fight the lies thatsay we left because we wanted to. We were harassed and robbed. That is why we left.
37. Israel to blame not to have mentioned our suffering
JewfromLibya ,   Rome, Italy   (07.10.09)
Israel is to blame not to have mentioned our suffering. The Ashkenazis do not seem to have cared.
38. Jewish Nakba !!!!!!!!!!???????????
Prof. Fouad Nabed   (07.10.09)
Prof.Aharoni attempting a cheap shot at re-writing history for reasons well obvious to any enlightened reader. Just ask the Jews of Iraq how they were "Convinced" to move to Israel. Jewish agents bombs were good reason....... and the list goes on and on.. How could you fall so low... Ada..
39. Fouad Nabed, 38, Are you really a professor?
Darren ,   Oakland, CA   (07.10.09)
Are you really so misinformed and misled by your own ideology as to ignore the historical events that led to Operations Ezra and Nehemiah? For one, google the word "Farhud" and read all about how Muslim riots killed scores of Jews and destroyed the livelihoods of even more Jewish families. Google the words "Dhimmi Laws" and read about the 1600 years of Muslim oppression and apartheid that led to the Jews' return to the land they are native to. It's precisely people like you who mislead people by presenting historical fiction as fact that led me to abandon your cause. Is it too much to demand intellectual honesty from a person who calls himself a professor?
40. john, 29, The real question is what village is Umm Khaled
Darren ,   Oakland, CA   (07.10.09)
built over? The world did not begin in the year 1900, regardless of what the Palestinians think and say.
41. not even going to bother to read...

thats of course after I've read the first sentence and rolled my eyes..
42. Palestinians will go home it does not matter how long takes
3009   (07.10.09)
43. #29, you know calling people names
Danny   (07.11.09)
isn't a substitute for argument. Are you claiming that in 1947-1948 the Palestinians followed by the armies of Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq didn't attack and try to eliminate the nascent Israel. You also trying to claim that had those armies won the Jews living there would have been allowed to stay in their properties unharmed?
44. #38, why don't you actually ask a few?
Danny   (07.11.09)
as opposed to repeating Arab lies? If I claimed that all of the Palestinians ran away because of a couple of hand grenades and nothing more - ie claimed there was no war going on, claimed that there were zero cases of Israelis expelling arabs, there were zero cases of Palestinians being told to leave by their elders or other arabs, that there were only a couple of grenades which were throw by other arabs but actually no other violence during that period.... then would you consider me credible or not? Again I ask you, if a couple of grenades was all it took and the Iraqi government was asking Iraqi Jews to stay - like what happened with the Yishuv government asking Arabs not to leave Haifa - then why did they leave then and not when there was far greater violence in 1941?
45. #26, here is a little research project for you
Danny   (07.11.09)
Why don't you find a Yemenite Jew, just one, who either: a) Wants to go back to live in Yemen, where presumably they were treated with respect and love b) Wants to swap with a Palestinian who lives in a camp in Syria or Lebanon, where their arab brothers have lovingly ensured they lack for nothing until they return home. Let me know the result.... Shouldn't be hard with love and concern fellow arabs shower on Palestinians and the abject racism of Israel. Wouldn't be surprised if the first Yemeni you meet says yes to both....
46. #30, Arabs weren't a majority
Danny   (07.11.09)
in original partition plan. But hey who cares about facts right?
47. #41, of course not
Danny   (07.11.09)
how else can you keep your ideology pure of any reason?
48. #5 - Don't you have that backwards?
William ,   Israel   (07.11.09)
It was Arabs who caused the Palestinian Nakba AND the Jewish Nakba. At the very root of this issue, it was Arab racism that begun in violence, with a goal of genocide against the Jews, and ended with Pals in refugee camps where they are treated as sub-human, with no rights to education, employment, decent security, even reliable water....at the behest of Arab leaders!! Since the days Mohammed walked this Earth, hate and racism has been the foundation and what drives them today to destroy Israel and block peace efforts that don't meet that goal.
49. #18 - Naftali or Ahmed - That narrative has been disproven
William ,   Israel   (07.11.09)
Many times over! It's a narrative Arabs use to paint themselves as victims and Zionists as initial instigators - even blaming WWII on them. Give it a rest. How many Arab Jews have you spoken to? I know plenty and not one will cite their family's move to Israel as a love of Zion. ALL of them cite threats and leaving in the middle of the night with the clothes on their backs, running for their lives, leaving much property, businesses, and a life behind - Iraq, Syria, Tunisia, Iran! My wife's family is Persian. They came to Israel and raised a family in dignity on a farm in the South. Though some Arab Jews have experienced racism, it's not so different across the world at that time in history. It still occurs between Arabs and non-Arabs on a ridiculous level. For Israel, that chapter has been dealt with and closed back in the 1980s. We're very proud of our ability to pull people from across the world, and live in one place, some different religions, in relative harmony. While most of the world cling to racist, homogeneous views of themselves.
50. #22 - "Who needs Israel's explanations? No one"
William ,   Israel   (07.11.09)
"We Leftists and pro-Arabs have made up our minds. We hate Jews. They are bad, they start wars, they spread disease, and I'm pretty sure they caused the green film on my pool. There is no explanation necessary because we believe what we believe and no facts or compromise will change that. If we wanted facts, we wouldn't need the BBC. To hell with Jews!" - Thanks Nora from Tel Aviv
51. #23 - Read it, and so what?
William ,   Israel   (07.11.09)
He really only cited his work inside Israel as a major point of his distaste. Nothing he said about his time in Iraq really pointed to claims of bombings and coercion by the Mossad. Regarding his claim of "stealing" land from Pals, there are two facts that he evidently wasn't aware of or didn't care to remember: 1) most land on which Arabs sat wasn't their's. Either they were settlers after the Sultan was ousted, or they came in the waves of illegal immigrants from Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Jordan in the 1930s. Hence, asking them to leave land that they really don't own shouldn't be a surprise. 2) Surrounding Arab villages were used by the Fayhadeen to infiltrate into Israel and hide from IDF forces while they launched attacks from their bases in Gaza and West Bank. This is well known and documented. These Arab terrorists didn't even target the IDF but went after civilians - much as they do today. They blocked roads, attacked people, and largely had sympathizers inside these cities. There is no reason why a State would not consider moving these 5th columns who threaten the entire population. But, unlike Arabs, the Jews in Arab countries did not threaten the State nor their neighbors, thus were targeted, as today, out of shear racist intentions.
52. #30 - Important to look back pre-1948 for truth
William ,   Israel   (07.11.09)
Pals were considered majority around mid-1940s based on two major injustices: Jewish immigration to land given to them from the Mandate in 1922 was almost completely cut off, while illegal Arab immigration brought tens of thousands from surrounding Arab countries in the 1930s. The true injustices here are: 1) a revised history of Arabs in the land which today marks a narrative that is mostly a lie, 2) an active goal of wiping out Jews from the region while Jews never had that goal over Arabs, 3) a purposeful use of Palestinians by Arab leaders for political goals, forcing them to live in fear and without dignity in Arab countries. These injustices are everything to the current conflict because only with knowing the whole story and bringing truth, will all injustices be given attention and a true peace can be attained.
53. #29 - A page from the Arab propaganda handbook, aka the Kora
William ,   Israel   (07.11.09)
Give it a rest John, who is probably writing from an internet cafe next to the ISM office. Your own post shows your biased racist nature because it leaves out 95% of the factual evidence that surrounds the story. You forgot to mention the large majority of Pals that ran due to Arab leaders instance and fear mongering. Deir Yassin was one of the major lies that was cleared up on a BBC interview in the 1990s. You forgot to mention the Arab villagers who not only supported, but also harbored Arab fighters and irregulars. Explain how an Iraqi soldier is wandering around the Galilee if not to prepare for future attacks? It's completely understandable, and LEGAL, to clear these areas out! I need only one instance to justify our actions of buildings towns over abandoned Arab towns - that golden monstrosity sitting atop MY Temple, in MY city!
54. #51, also remember
Danny   (07.11.09)
that 2/3 of mandate Israel wasn't privately owned land, it was owned by the sultan and most of the land owned privately by arabs was owned by a few rich families. Most of the arabs "kicked out of their homes" were not in "their homes" in the first place.
55. #3 William, the only one
Lisa   (07.11.09)
William, I think you are the only one getting the idea of the article. I agree 100%. What people do not understand they do not support- most of what has happened in the Middle east concerning Israel is not really known in Europe, except for maybe some academics- and then sometimes I question even that. The West must see the whole picture, not just the Arab side- Israel has been too discreet'- .People need to hear the other side of the story. The Araba have been very good at appealing to all the bleeding hearts taking the side of the underdog- Israel wants to be strong and acts that way- good- but how did it get that way-? Thorugh the suffering hand hardship of Jews . Good Luck-
56. #55
m ,   jerusalem   (07.11.09)
sorry to tell you this buddy but israel has never been too discrete about this issue. its actuallt the complete opposite israel is one of the best countries if not the best country at PR to make the world feel sorry for it. I have a solution to this. everyone who has been involved in either the palestinian nakba or if there is a jewish nakba everyone should just be given back the land that they were on prior to 1948. That would make things even jews get back land in other parts of the middle east including some parts of Israel /palestine and the palestinians get back the land they had before they were kicked out of it. this would be a solution unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world
57. "nakba"?
bobo ,   Mechanicsburg USA   (07.11.09)
I didn't read the entire article, but since when did Israel rely upon stealing fake words/sayings/circumstances to respond to Islam's fake circumstances? That is, dosen't Israel have enough brain power to think of their own name for something? Why steal a fake situation the Arabs use to identify your own problems? Nakba? I don't believe there was a real "nakba" for the Arabs that they did not make for themselves. So the term nakba isn't even real. You can call an automobile a boat if you want, but it doesn't actually make it a boat. Why sink to the depths that the Arabs sink to?
58. #54 - Actual number much lower
William ,   Israel   (07.11.09)
According to Turkish records, only 5% of the land in the region was privately owned. The British have no records of land sales from State-held Mandate land (previously Turkish State held land) to private individuals. Turks were also known to move populations around to maintain control which is why a whole city of Sudanese Muslims suddenly appeared on the coast near Haifa 140 years ago. This only underscores the fact that private land ownership wasn't common.
59. #56 - A simpleton solution to a comlex problem
William ,   Israel   (07.11.09)
Your solution isn't one at all. It's a whitewash of history and a knee-jerk reaction to help your own ego regarding the solution, not the people who were involved. There are a great many injustices here and lives go, which makes it hard to uproot people yet again to fix something. We're not potted plants - we're human beings - and your solutions smacks of self-righteousness the same that the West or the Arabs bring to the table - to make THEM feel better. Before any compensation should begin, the major injustice that must be address is the definition of Pal refugees. No one else in the world enjoys such a generous status - only 2 years in the region and all generations share the status. Once Pal refugees are re-defined under the global refugee definition, we can begin. Plus - why should Arabs who illegally enter a country and squat on land be rewarded on the same level as a Jew who arrived and paid top dollar for land?? Why should Pals be absolved for participating in genocidal aggressions, even indirectly, when Jews, who were attacked for racist reasons, receive nothing?
60. ethnic cleansing
Richard   (07.12.09)
I'm catholic and I was aware of the jewish expulsions. The conflict in the middle east isn't about jews or muslims, it's about the US proliferation of democratic fascism. Which is why Israel needs to obtain independence from the US to obtain regional acceptence and resolution of the conflict with the palestinians.
