While freedom of speech is important, that freedom must never include the right to lie about others in an effort to harm or discredit them. To allow it to continue while saying it is not a big deal is a terrible mistake. Our fellow Jews in Sweden should understand that the hatred spread by a few in Sweden toward Jews reflects on all Jews. In this case, I agree with Israel. I will add that I do not always agree with the Israeli government's actions.

Sweden has plenty of Anti Semitism which they all know comes straight out of their Muslim population which no one there would dare try to reign in since they would then be accused of Islamophobia which is seen as racist and fascist and would be cause for attacks. Yes, freedom of speech, but the Swedish government should distance itself from this distasteful, libelous article. The real issue is the anti-semitic feelings in Sweden, which is constantly displayed. The response from Israel should simply be at this point to deny press passes to this particular reporter. From the viewpoint of the jews in Sweden the debate was going the right way, the pressure was on Aftonbladet. When Lieberman started to pressure the Swedish Government to condemn Aftonbladet the debate was lost. Then it became about not succoumbing to foreign pressure. Even several hardline pro-israeli blogs were complaining about the Israeli government. It is a copy of the Swedish debate about the Muhammed Caricatures. The Swedish Government did not want to condemn the publication of Muhammed caricatures when pressured by arab countries and people in Sweden thought that was a good position. I hope you can see the Swedish debate in that context.

I attended the pro-Israel rally in Malmö. It is correct that the police did not do their job the first time. However, we arranged a second rally and the police really showed that they had learned their lesson. We could carry out the rally and when the arabs tried to interrupt us the Malmö police came in full force to break up the anti-israeli rally. Parliamentarians from the liberal party, member of the Goverment coalition, spoke at our rally and in support if Israel. A Swedish member of teh European Parliament did the same. I was and still am a proud Swedish citizen and Jew.

I was born and raised in Sweden, and I wish I hadn't been. I left as soon as I was able to, and I hope I never have to return again. It's not about anti-semitism, it's about ignorance. Sweden is probably the most ignorant industrialized nation in the world. The fact that you can be prime minister and not even have a university degree ought to tell people something, but it doesn't. You cannot expect these people to understand the holocaust or anything else if it is not being taught properly. The fact that they have a highly irresponsible immigration policy that has led to muslims being the fastest growing population in Sweden might have something to do with it. Now they are more concerned with offending muslims than actually standing up for what's right. That is unlikely to change. Frankly, Nazis taking over as the ruling party would be an upgrade over the Social Democrats and the Moderates, at least they have a backbone. It's not my problem anymore, and I'll spend the rest of my life trying to forget about ever being affiliated with such ignorance and denial. If you're intelligent, Sweden is not for you.

The fact is that if the Swedish government would review this news article, this would be a violation of the Swedish constitution. Swedish politicians may express their personal views on the matter but not the opinion of the government. It is the editor of Aftonbladet who is responsible and who this rage should be directed against. My personal view is that the article should not have been published unless the journalist had very good evidence to back it up. Which does not appear to be the case. On a second note: yes anti-Semitism exists in Sweden as in many other countries. Such views are, however, not widespread as suggested by some on this forum. This is simply untruthful and absurd. Anti-Semitic views are considered extremist in Sweden. Sweden is a secular country where extremist views in general are uncommon. It is true that many Swedes are sympathetic to the Palestinian cause as they are now experiencing much the same hardship as the Israeli people previously has. This support does not mean that Swedes in general condone Palestinian terrorist attacks, quite the opposite. Sweden has long been involved and supported negotiations to try to find a lasting peace.
