1. Ad campaign was
Jared ,   Toronto, Canada   (09.10.09)
intense and perhaps to forceful but the problem is real. Instead of getting angry over the videos it would probably do the Jewish community well to get angry of the problem of assimilation and inter-marriage. But it's easy to get mad over a video then to address fundamental problems in thinking and behavior so I can understand why people don't think more.
2. Diaspora Jews are always offended.
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem Israel   (09.10.09)
Anyway the commercial is intended for an Israeli audience, hence it's only in Hebrew. Why don't they come up with a better plan to stop assimilation? They obviously aren't giving it too much effort.
3. JJ Goldberg completely misses the point
Randi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.10.09)
the campaign was not trying to win over the children of mixed marriages. The campaign was trying to prevent more children of mixed marriages. t
4. #3 completely misses the point
Igor ,   Germany   (09.10.09)
Whatever the campaign was trying to do, its EFFECT was to alienate mixed couples and their children from Israel.
5. @ #2
GHook93 ,   Chicagi   (09.10.09)
We are citizens of the country we live in and no other. Most American Jews are offended because we see ourselves as Americans first and everything else 2nd! I personally find it offensive when an immigrant groups comes to the host country (much like the muslims are doing all over Europe) and refuse to assimulate! Its insulting to the host country!
6. Religious Coercion and the Lost Jews Ad
Menachem ,   New York City   (09.10.09)
This is a classic case of religious coercion by US and Israeli Liberal Jews against the rest of world Jewry. They have denied the Jewish Agency's right to freedom of expression and religion on the grounds that the LOST Jews Ad offends their religious sensibilities. The Liberal Jews are univerlastic/plutaralistic coercers. They have the chutzpah to tell the Pope what he can believe about Jews and to decide what sacrements the Mormons can or cannot follow in order not to offend the Liberal Jew's sensibilities. Suppose the missing posters in the LOST Jews Ad had pictured semi-clad women and men instead and the Charedim would have complained that their religious sensibilities were offended. The Liberal Jews and the talking heads of the Israeli and Jewish MSM would have had a field day, screaming "religious coercion" and "there goes Israeli democracy". Would Lapid, Goldberg and Yoffe have called for the Jewish Agency to pull those ads. I do not think so.
7. Why the assimilationists are freaking out
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (09.10.09)
Most of the time, assimilated, non-observant persons of Mosaic extraction don't give a rat's all about Israel and Judaism. Suddenly, they are all outraged. Over what? They're the center of attention, they should be enjoying that!
8. Rabbi Laura Baum? how is a women a rabbi?
not such thing as a ,   female rabbi!   (09.10.09)
you cant just change religion to be how you see fit. either follow the rules or dont but dont make them up.
9. Diaspora
Albi ,   Ashkelon   (09.10.09)
Here we go again sending know-it-all Israelis or even Russians to tell North American Jews how to run their lives. Why should an American or Canadian Jew, who is free as a Jew to pray how he or she sees fit, whose religion is non political, non racist, non prejudiced, take advice from so called 'experts' whose religion is corrupt, violent, whose kashrut and conversions are rife with bribery even listen to these jokers who don't understand the people or the culture they are trying to influence. Native Jews do not have to worry that someone will cruelly stop their wedding at the last minute because some cleric decided the bride hadn't spit properly in someone's face according to his 'halacha'. Furthermore, the character example set by masses of Israeli yordim only serve to distance local Jews from the snakeoil you are trying to sell. Get realistic and look at yourselves first. Just observing the religious situation here may very well indicate that the future of Judaism as a universal religion lies elsewhere.

12. Assimilation
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (09.11.09)
I bet, if any sector of “Goydom” were to run ads to discourage and decry assimilation with anyone else, there'd be worlwide screaming and hollering about every “Anti-ism” under the sun. Maybe Judaism suffers from the same “ailment” as every other religion: Education. It's hard to keep believing the stories in “Holy Books,” when there's more and more proof that a lot of them are sheer nonsense, self-promotion, and wishful thinking; implying that God either didn't have a clue of exactly why He/She created a universe, occasionally screwing up so badly as to have to drown, explode, implode, and shove down black holes a few parts and start those from scratch, not to mention having been so inept and befuddled as to “inspire” chapters in one part of those holy books that promptly contradict themselves a few chapters later. Jews lie, steal, cheat, bicker among themselves, kill, and are prejudiced like everybody else. So what exactly is special about being Jewish other than someone with an agenda insisting that it is? Unfortunately, that kind of attitude always produces other groups with other agendas, who insist that they're even more special and here we go again. Maybe there'll never be peace on this planet until there are no more relgions, when human beings are simply thankful for the gift of their lives, treat each other with kindness and respect, and not give their origins of whatever mixture a second thought.
13. marry outside their faith?
observer   (09.11.09)
racists!, what has marriage to do with faith?
14. faith conflict
observer   (09.11.09)
to be assimilate is to humiliate the Jewish faith?
15. No add can have an effect one way or the other.
leo ,   usa   (09.11.09)
16. Many American Jews supported this ad.
anti-intermarriage ,   America   (09.11.09)
Then only Jews offended are the ones in intermarried households who have non-Jewish children. They infortunately made the biggest fuss and got all the press. The truth hurts and that's why they whined like a bunch of babies.
17. "Rabbi" Laura Baum actually endorses intermarraige.
anti-intermarraige ,   America   (09.11.09)
Beside being a phony Rabbi this woman encourageous intermarriages. It's really sick what secular Judaism has become.
18. Unavoidable consequence of leaving the ghetto behind
Cameron ,   USA   (09.11.09)
Intermarriage will only increase with each passing decade. Some of the offspring will identify, & see themselves as Jews, others will not. I saw this process in high gear during my years in Chicago. I had two Jewish girlfriends there, and I do not honestly recall the issue of my Irish-Catholic identity, and their Jewishness, ever becoming a negative, or problem.
19. Why not have more children
Eli   (09.11.09)
israel as a nation face a big problem, if they dont start to have more children the palestinians are gonna outnumber them soon and they are aware of this. but why arent the gouverment helping those who want more children?
20. Anti-assimilation ads yanked over uproar
Daniel Bassiouni ,   UK   (09.11.09)
Massa & The Jewish Agency are happy to take donations from diaspora Jews with a smile & a thank you. Now they are vilifying the same people who extended a hand to help them. I am going to stop my donations to any JA campaign from now on.
21. #2 Nick
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (09.11.09)
We hate intermarraige !! At the same time we hate the desire to live in a vacuum of rebbinic rhetoric. We see quite clearly what assimilation can do, and by the same token we see quite clearly what orthodoxy is doing to Judaism. No TV, only read the orthodox press, computers are evil. Your methods are just as destructive if not more so than assimilation. Orthodoxy does not want Jews that think, just robots who will do exactly what their leadership tells them. Sad.
22. 5. I have a couple of thoughts on ur points
(09.11.09)
1. Being citizens of a country does not mean that we should lose our responsibility to our people. Our main responsibility is to NOT destroy am israel, the Jewish people. Sadly assimilation is destructive. Our first responsibility cannot be to our personal happiness alone as that is also destructive and next to impossible to find. Personal contentment and happiness is always found in the greater good. It is a difficult concept to express, so I hope that I have done a reasonable job. 2. There truly is NO comparison to holding on to one's self and the destructive, aggressive and expansionary behavior of the Muslims of Europe. Please rethink your analogy. 3. Regardless to the loyalty and love the diaspora has for their home countries...and it is great, without Israel we have NOTHING. Don't forget that and if you have it is time to read Jewish history.
23. The "Jewish" Forward
Frank ,   Oakland, USA   (09.12.09)
The "Jewish" Forward (JJ Goldberg's publication) is the most ANTI-ISRAEL American "Jewish" publication, an extremist "progressive", in league with George Soros' J STREET. It pubishes the most outrageous anti-Israel articles, and actively propagandizes against American support fot Israel. Why anyone would quote him on Jewish matters is beyond me.
24. 21. Ben....
Words of Wisdom   (09.13.09)
I am not orthodox...nor extremely religious, but try to know my history and feel a great responsibility to my people. Further, I too disapprove of intermarriage as in doing so we damage the Jewish people irrevocably. With that said, I believe that it is important to note that "Orthodoxy" is a large umbrella with many under it and your incrimination of it is too sweeping. The "orthodoxy" are certainly entitled to their life style, and even have the right to tell me they disagree with mine. What they don't have, is the right to forcefully control me. Quite frankly, many are not forcefully controlling anyone and are only guilty of the first two "crimes". Nor do the secular have the right to insist the "orthodoxy" is less than, if they choose not to live as we do. Please remember that tolerance is a two way street and those of us on either side of religion, who nonetheless are Zionists, do a disservice to Israel when we are intolerant of one another. We all need to stop cutting off our noses to spite our faces.
25. #3 100% right. #4,You miss the point. Nobody cares if EFFECT
L ,   Israel   (09.13.09)
alienates the children of mixed marriages (if the mother is the non-Jew, that is) because those children are not Jewish. You cannot remove something that has already been removed (the parents did the damage). The campaign is trying to increase JEWISH love of Israel. Sorry if that makes all the guilt-ridden abdicators of their childrens' religion feel baaaaaad. Sometimes guilt is a good thing -as the campaign is attempting to elicit- but for the "outraged" it's probably too late. They are beyond alienating.
26. Paranoid
Ruth C ,   Israel   (09.13.09)
The ad never mentions intermarriage, it means assimilation. That can mean having two Jewish parents but not being connected to Judaism in any other way. So what's all the yelling about intermarriage?
27. Ruth 26 , not paranoid .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.13.09)
Assimilation brings intermarriage . People who are assimilated don't give any Jewish education [ not necessarely religious ] and this brings intermarriage . Children go to state schools , then to univ , always in a Gentile environnement . They hardly know any Jew , fall in love and got married to a Gentile .
28. # 24 Words of Wisdom?
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (09.15.09)
What wisdom? Yes, orthodoxy is a large umbrella. Yes, orthodoxy tries very hard to influence all others to follow in their hatred of the non-orthodox. Certainly they have the right to live and practice Judaism in any manner that suits them. HOWEVER they lack the right to force others into their mold. We see quite clearly how they distort the teachings of Torah to suit whatever they claim is Judaism. As a secular Jew, I have no need to denigrate the orthodox way of life. The orthodox do that all by themselves. You are correct, tolerance should be a two way street. HOWEVER, have tried many times to make the orthodox respect the idea of "live and let live" but was always repulsed by those who insist that only their ways were the correct ways. Have yet to find any orthodox person willing to respect "live and let live". It is a shame, but orthodoxy only respects orthodoxy. Unfortunately, your "words of wisdom" are falling on deaf ears and closed minds.
29. True
MN ,   Israel   (09.15.09)
I thought that the ad was excellent. It brought up a real problem. The truth is that aside from the Orthodox, the rest of the Jews in the Diaspora will disappear as Jews in another generation or two.
30. Ben , in Monroe . No wonder that you were repulsed
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.15.09)
Who would appreciate you with your hate towards the Orthodox . I , a TRUE secular Jew , had'nt and have'nt any problem wit Orthodox Jews who know me . I'm received very well in their homes , and they can even eat at mine . We have discussions , of course , they sometimes try to convince me , but we always stay very polite , and respectfull to each other . And of course , i'm not always attacking the Rabbanim as you do .
