1. more leftist incitement
Ben ,   Gush Etzion   (09.27.09)
Yom Kippur means a day at the beach for them, no G-d, no asking forgiveness, and certainly no toleration for those who DO believe in G-d. They invent "facts" that have not been researched or verified. All to vilify the religious. May their children all do teshuva and become chareidim!!!!
2. Thank the religious parasite fanatics in the Knesset.
Tahl ,   Ashdod, Israel   (09.27.09)
There is no sense in having winter time so soon, it is totally depressing to have darkness by 6pm. The argument about Yom Kippur is completely stupid and ridiculous - either way it's a 25 hours fast. Who cares what time it is when it starts or ends? Either way it's from sundown until the first three stars. This is definitely a case of the religious fanatic parasites in the Knesset flexing their muscles and making the seculars aware of their power (and hate them even more, by making our lives miserable). By the way, I don't hear the religious Jews abroad complain about summer daylight savings time, when fasting in Yom Kippur... So if Jews abroad can do it without whining, so can Jews in Israel. So enough with the fanatic religious coercion. Aren't we supposed to be an enlightened Western country? These religious fanatics make us look more like Iran than anything Western.
3. Make it easier ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.27.09)
Winter or summer tiime , the fast lasts for around 25 hours . Is the fast for Jews in the USA and Europe so difficult ? And there the fast lasts also 25 hours and even ends much later as here .
4. even if it is a "vIctory" for ultra orthodox, who cares?
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (09.27.09)
it's all part of societal give-and-take, a healthy exercise in a diverse and complex population. it is silly and childish to regard something minor that doesn't go your way as a "surrender". get over yourselves, people.
5. Yes, it's still a 25 hour fast.
Roman ,   Lod, Israel   (09.27.09)
Except for one minor detail... with DST, there's one hour more spent in the hardest part of the fast - IE, the evening toward the end of the fast. Those of you saying that it's still the same 25 hours should actually try to fast during DST time. The start of the fast, from the eve of the previous day to nightfall, is the easiest part - you've recently eaten, drank, you're pretty much set to go. The next morning you're already weaker and a bit dry, but nothing too bad yet - sleep isn't really taxing during the fast. As the hours move on, though, it gradually gets worse. Add to that the fact that the Yom Kippur prayer is mostly standing up for hours, and it simply gets worse. Poraz's comment is quite silly, by the way - we *can't* start the prayer an hour later and just rest for an extra hour at night, we have to start the morning prayer while its still permissible to say the morning Kri'at Shma. Those times depend purely on the sunrise-sunset interval, not on Poraz's whims. As for prayers abroad... perhaps those saying it should realize that the 0.01% Jews in various countries can't really alter daylight saving time laws to suit their concerns? Here in Israel, we can. So we do.
6. looking for trouble and hatreed
p ,   Jerusalem   (09.27.09)
some people are just looking for any chance to stir up hatreed ! Disgusting !!!
7. Two hours of summer time
Sagi   (09.27.09)
and leave it that way all year long. I remember the days when there was no such thing as moving the clock back and forward. Life was much better then, no interference from capricious sectorial groups who want to control others life and thoughts and dictate to the State.
8. END DST FOR GOOD!
stude ham   (09.27.09)
DST IS AN ARCANE ANACHRONISTIC RELIC OF THE HORSE AND CARRIAGE VARIETY... AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN STOPPED MANY YEARS AGO.
9. Daylight Saving Time
Ginette Golden ,   Toronto, Canada   (09.27.09)
Again I am shocked to read that T.A. residents would spend Yom Kippur day at the beach. This is not what this day mean and I tend to agree with Ben #1. I really don't understand what the fuss is about. In my little head, if the daylight saving starts earlier it would mean we can end Yom Kippur service earlier and eat at an earlier time; even if it does not really matter in the end because it's the same amount of time fasting (25hrs). There is more to worry about than what date to start daylight saving time. Yom Kippur is a favorite time for Arab extremists to attack Israel unexpectedly. The whole country is always in my prayers along with my family. I wish you all a safe Yom Kippur, amen!
10. democracy seems flawed to extremists
Ilan ,   Ariel   (09.27.09)
Like any other democratic decision this matter was decided in the Knesset. I note that people who would throw Jews from their homes as in in disengagement or bring in armed terrorists as in Oslo, or put a radical leftist court over the country have no problem with even the thinnest margins in the Knesset and with bribes to boot. Only when they perceive that the 'other' benefit and not them do they raise an upcry. They have no shame.
11. , Thousands of Jews fast abroad
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.27.09)
And i know it having lived there and even had to fast . But it's not deadly , i assure you . But talking to you is to no avail , when confronted to true facts , you disappear .
12. Ben , and others
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.27.09)
only those who have sinned need to pray and fast . Fine seculars can eat and go to the beach .
13. # 9 Please do not be shocked
Sagi   (09.27.09)
because every person is free,or should be, to do as he or she thinks fit. Every person must be free to decide how he or she wants to conduct his or her life. He who wishes to bow down to imaginery supernatural entities and he who wishes to bathe in the sea. Religion and Gods are all figments of man's vivid imagination, nothing more and nothing less. I am prepared to respect anyone and everyone,on one condition only, that they have respect for me.

NYC Girl   (09.27.09)
That was exactly my father's philosophy. He always told us the best thing is never to do anything you'll need to atone for. So my father ate his usual ham sandwich for lunch on Yom Kippur, but he and my mother continued to do a lot of good work helping people who weren't as fortunate as they were.
15. To #9: aren't you duplicitous?
Dino Saur ,   Bnei Brak   (09.27.09)
The highest mitzva of all is to populate the Eretz Israel. I am shocked you live in Canada and have the temerity to lecture the Israelis on what to do on Yom Kippur.
16. Daylight Savings Time Is Meaningless
emanon ,   USA   (09.27.09)
Just as the Jewish Calendar is based on a lunar cycle, the times from lighting Shabbat candles, beginning and breaking a fast and other commandments are based on the either the sun's position or the visibility of stars. Agrarian based workers will still be basing their sleep cycle on the waking habits f their animals, not a man-made division of time. I've lived places that do not observe daylight savings time and it is easier to deal with than changing clocks twice a year for some purpose no one really understands or cares about.
17. To #4 Mike: Yes, we give and they take!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (09.27.09)
What do they give? They leech on the country, don't serve in the army and don't want to have to fast a little longer because of DTS. The whole country goes onto Winter Time becuase of a few who will not compromise on anything whether its "bones" found and so delaying the building of the railway and highways or burning trash because a parking garage is opened on Shabbat. It is time that we, the silent majority, started voicing their opinions to their MK's like Israel Beiteinu who sold them out! As for Netanyahu, he will sell the country to save his Government!
18. haridim
colin   (09.27.09)
These idol believing paasites do evry possible move to force thier religion on the majority. They believe they are sinners!!!!Give a bit to the poor and sickly. I love this day of fating they demand. It gives me time for a timeless wonderful tasty barbecue at the beach with quiet from these parasites, I know that from that day the parasites get nil from seculars, not taxes,no taxis no donations NILL and they are all locked up praying to the idols.
19. Roman #5
Tahl ,   Ashdod, Israel   (09.27.09)
First, just because "you can" doesn't mean it is justifiable that the whole country has to suffer from an early nightfall because of special consideration for you people. Second, your argument is not convincing. In a summer clock, there is no "one more hour spent in the hardest part of the fast". It is EXACTLY the same as in winter clock. In either case, the fast is based on an absolute time, regardless of what the clock shows: from sundown until the first three stars. To illustrate my point: in summer time, you'd start the fast just after 6pm. Let's say you finish your prayers at 10pm. You go to sleep at say 11pm. You wake up, at say, 6am and pray, and then wait until 7pm until three stars are out for your fast to end - that's 13 hours. In winter time, it is exactly the same, only with a one-hour shift. You start the fast at 5pm, finish your prayers at 9pm, go to sleep at 10pm, wake up at 5am, and wait again 13 hours until three stars are out for breaking your fast. Hence, the difference here is fictional and psychological. If you're still bothered by it, simply remove your watch and all other clocks on Yom Kippur, and schedule yourself according to what other people do. This should solve your problem.
20. My 11 adressed to Roman
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.27.09)
21. Daylight Savings Time
Kay ,   USA   (09.27.09)
Really? I can't believe all of you! Have you nothing better to occupy your shallow minds with than to rant and rave and whine over this? What difference does it really make either way? I suggest you all get a life.
22. Why does no one dare to tell the truth...
RAGUSA   (09.27.09)
the fact that the US and Europe is ending DST a month later than Israel is the result of an anti jewish conspiracy ! ! !
23. # 14 NYC Girl
Sagi   (09.27.09)
That tale about your double sinning Father,(ham+Yom Kippur), will no doubt evoke some expletives after the sinners fast and repent and the three stars kick in.
24. # 19 Tahl, you said a lot but
Sagi   (09.27.09)
one word of yours sums it all up,psychological. I have sympathy for religious cranks and nutcases, from all creeds, they are pathetically misguided individuals with behavior bordering on idol worship and beliefs so nonsensical and illogical that they eventually indoctrinate themselves and alienate themselves from mainstream society. I feel very sorry for them sometimes but on the other hand I detest their tactics of coercion and their attempts at determining the nature of society and trying to control others. They practice a form of terrorism. By the way, I do not eat, and never have eaten ham, and I respect Yom Kippur by staying quietly at home. This respect is because Yom Kippur is a National event and I respect the laws of my Nation and not the dictates of individuals or sections of society.
25. The REAL reason for opposing DST.
Stewart ,   U.S.A.   (09.28.09)
When daylight savings time was conceived many decades ago in the U.S., the farmers opposed it because they claimed it disrupted the cow milking schedule. I decided to look into this. Sure enough when I checked the cows in the pasture across the road, they where all trying to fiddle with their wrist watches so they could be sure they could adjust them back when standard time started. Seeing how those poor cows struggled with those wrist watches, I think the farmers had a point.
26. #16 DST is not meaningless.
Tahl ,   Ashdod, Israel   (09.27.09)
And exactly how many people in society, are agrarian based workers?... The majority of the population clearly is not, and work in regular 9-to-5 jobs, and thus daylight savings time DOES have a significant meaning. Savings of electricity is one, but much more important is the number of light hours. Daylight is very important. It is very depressing to have darkness fall early, it gives you much less opportunities to utilize the daylight. And you cannot adjust yourself only based on the sun and stars... If you work 9-to-5, you cannot change it all of a sudden to 8-to-4. You cannot change your bus or train schedules. You cannot change your children's school hours. All of society adjusts itself to the winter clock, and obviously you cannot continue living in a summer clock. Thus winter clock forces you to waste an hour of daylight in the morning, which you pay for in the evening. However, I would agree to have a single clock throughout the year: simply avoid winter clock at all, and use summer clock all the time (I.E. GMT +3 instead of +2).
27. 17 - not completely
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (09.27.09)
on shabbat the airport functions, restaurants and shops are open, parking garages next to the old city are in business. there are stores that sell pork, nudity on television, secular public education, ambulances on yom kippur, and so on. sure the orthodox take a lot, but they do not have final say on everything. this place is far from being an orthodox paradise. far from it.
28. # 21 Kay, I have a life
Sagi   (09.28.09)
the problem is that others interfere with it all the time. The issue is one of great principle and therefor your comments as to whining, ranting and raving etc.are way out of line. Would the American public put up with an Administration that decided to enact the rules and regulations of the Aimish,if they demanded it,which of course they would not, as they are decent law abiding citizens, unlike our unruly, rioting religious weirdos.Think about it. We take it very seriously.
29. No. 23 Sagi
NYC Girl   (09.28.09)
I know this won't do anything to ameliorate the anger of the people who think my family bought a one-way ticket to hell, but when we lived in a neighborhood where we had some Hasidic neighbors, we didn't drive, my mother didn't smoke, and we absolutely weren't permitted to eat anything outside of the house on Yom Kippur. So, while my family wasn't observant, we were careful not to offend the sensibilities of our religious neighbors out of respect, and also because our neighbors didn't feel compelled to force their Orthodox beliefs on us. So, perhaps the moral to this story is that if my atheist parents and our Hasidic neighbors didn't feel it necessary to try to impose their beliefs on each other, maybe that's the model for co-existence in places like New York and Israel, where people from opposite ends of the religious spectrum sometimes find themselves living side by side.
30. They are egoists .
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.28.09)
They say : i don't want my tax money to subsidise buses on Shabbat . But when you ask : And my money ? don't i have the right for buses on Shabbat ? They disappear [ that's for Roman ] Yes , the last hours of the fast are the most difficult , it's true . All the Jews in West Europa and USA have the end of the fast at around 8 PM . Not deadly . Rav Elishav said that Yom Kippour must no be confortable . But here they make it easier . Some contradiction , not ? What a comedy for some . The whole year they eat everything , do everything on Shabbat , but Yom Kippour ! That's holy . Superstition !
