They kept my Jewish grandmother 3 hours for questioning once, she was 87 in a wheelchair. They also stripped to her underwear my cousin in a room at the back of the entrance lounge, who was 12 at the time,searching her for drugs poking and prodding at her as she was crying like a young girl in a foreign land would. Luckily 'on this occasion' the 12 year old was not concealing drugs. Maybe its a mix of the staff playing detective and getting off on the power trip, who knows.

I'm a former US Marine, who was involved with aviation, and El Al is now the only airline I will fly on, not just due to the fact that it's the only one with security, but I feel it has the very best maintenance, safety, service, and highest trained personal, back in the US the people working in airport security, are the very bottom of the barrel, and the policies are just plain dumb. South Africa might just want El Al's piece of the pie, because their airlines can't compete, not to mention most people departing from SA these days don't have return tickets, all one ways to Israel, the US, Australia, and Canada.

However, I would like to point out that someone who does not wish Israel well is not likely to dress up in combat fatigues, boots and and a keffiyeh. They are much more likely to be someone's wheelchair-bound grandmother or a twelve year old child. It has happened. That's why the rigorous airport checks. If it's any comfort, these actions help keep you safe during your stay in Israel.

I am a Jewish grandmother, sometimes wheelchair bound. In an airport in Canada with mostly Muslim security guards and travelling on a Canadian airline I was humiliated by the airport staff and forced to wait while able bodied people were allowed to board first, I had difficulty getting to my seat and storing my onboard luggage. And these were not Israelis. Having gone through El Al security several times, quite frankly I prefer it.

Racical profiling is about looking for security risks. Racism is about picking on somebody just because you dont like them over skin colour. I have done security work both in and outside Israel in the past as well as serving in the IDF. Anybody who knows anything about security knows that there are some people who are a possible higher risk than others and so its justified to take a greater interst in them than known lower risk groups. Its a fact that when it comes to Israel 99% of it is carried out by islamic terrorists mainly arab. Its a known fact that in South Africa most violent crime is committed by blacks. They may deny it but I am sure that police officers in South Africa don't keep a closer eye on blacks than whites? So what would be the difference to that and ELAL racial profiling which has gone along way to making it the undisputed safest airline in the world.
