5. mitchel got personal vandeta against Israel
ghostq   (01.10.10)
it's not the first time he got froidian slips, since the begining of his career, he should tell what he really thinks cause we all know he is just pretending to be a man of peace and a friend of Israel, he just hate when obama send him to deal with Israel, cause until now it's in the last priority in the must to do list. just save all the pretending we know what your up to.
6. to #4 USA doesn't give money
ghostq   (01.10.10)
she gives loans, and collect with intrest basically today she enslaves the Israeli market and security while trying to ruin it.
7. It's about time!
fankaar ,   USA   (01.10.10)
Both Israel and the Palestinians are being too stubborn; they need to realize that the longer this conflict drags on, the more innocent lives will be lost, and they need to work together and arrive at some sort of compromise.
8. Wait till the 2010 elections, #2
Cameron ,   USA   (01.10.10)
Then you'll be able to make that kind of statement with confidence.
9. I Dare You
Ari ,   Los Angeles, USA   (01.10.10)
Cut aid to Israel and Israel should retaliate by selling weaponry to US adversaries all across the world. Cut aid to Israel and see the US eclipsed as Middle East power broker as Israel gets support elsewhere (ie, France/Russia) and the US is no longer able to mediate. Cut aid to Israel and see the hypocrisy of US power: every other US ally from Taiwan to South Korea to Poland/Czech Republic has had to wake up to the perils of dependency on the US when the US forces dictates upon it. Cut aid to Israel and see the ripple effect around the world as US allies see that Washington is not a trustworthy ally but rather a backstabber. Cut aid to Israel and see building and settlements GROW. Cut aid to Israel and watch an epic drama in Jewish history unfold before our eyes.
10. No diplomatic mistakes
Mea   (01.10.10)
The seed was tossed into the air over fertile ground. Who do you think you're kidding Mr. Mitchell? Here it is in a nutshell: OBAMA OUT IN 2012!

Alkalai ,   USA   (01.10.10)
Doesn't Obama and his team of anti-semites in the WH get it yet???????? Don't mess with Israel
13. Well, that didn't take long
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.10.10)
The U.S. administration can backpedal as quickly as it can, but the damage has been done. We know exactly what was said, and we know the context in which it was said. No matter how fast the administration scrambles. Does Obama realize that he is not particularly welcome in Israel? As far as I am concerned, the only real choice is whether Israel should simply tell him not to bother, or if it would be more fun to allow him to show up but have him met at the airport by the chief janitor in the Knesset in a Subaru and simply have Netanyahu snub him. That's certainly one way to drive home the point that Israel's policies are made in Jerusalem, not in Washington D.C. Even someone as dense as Obama should get the point.
14. Mitchell's foolishness
Judith ,   Rishon, Israel   (01.10.10)
How dare Mr. Mitchell threaten Israel with sanctions. The US cannot treat Israel as it should its enemies. What is happening to the United States?
15. Spiteful talk, Ari
Cameron ,   USA   (01.10.10)
Don't compound the problem with moves that will stack yet more difficulties on Israel's back. Hunker down, and play it smooth and cool till we can send the fellow on his way in 2012. You'll simply have to wait this one out.
16. Enough
(01.10.10)
As #9 says, the US "aid" helps America more than Israel. Keep it, we don't want it, it just corrupts Israel and its politicians.
17. Pharaoh
Yehudi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (01.10.10)
And a new Pharaoh arose in Egypt who knew not Joseph (Ex. 1:8).
18. Pressure
Mark of Lewiston ,   Lewiston USA   (01.10.10)
Israeli pundits and gov officials have complained about US pressure from before Obama was sworn in. And he hasn't yet pressured anybody. Even in the interview, Mitchell's not pressuring anybody. He answered a question. George Mitchell had no reason to lie. The power to pressure both sides exists. It hasn't been used yet. Israeli gov protests to the contrary, Israel has done NOTHING to bring the PA to the table. Israel has ignored its own Roadmap responsibilities. If you don't like it, please tell the US publicly to go; that you have no interest in any US aid in achieving anything. The US can find a way to accommodate you. Though when you face a single bi-national state, don't say you weren't aware of what your policies would result in.
19. Annual $3B in military aid does not make or break Israel
Yaniv ,   Israel   (01.10.10)
What we need from America mostly (what we MISTAKENLY think we need) is US vetoes against anti-Israel UN resolutions. Israel's GDP is $280B so we're not exactly desperate for a handout. The $3B is more like a discount coupon for all the military toys and logistics we buy from the US and that also commits us to a list of things that we are only allowed to buy from America. It's all business as usual. How did you think the America became so wealthy?
20. mitchell
joe ,   nyc usa   (01.10.10)
And when Mitchell was done, he said "salam alekam" to Charley the Jino Rose and went off to a hookah bar. Meanwhile Rose got a ""tingle" and called his broker to short the Tel Aviv Exchange.
21. He couldnt tell the truth? Israel is NOT refusing to talk.
Rebecca ,   Modiin   (01.10.10)
Israel has not only asked the PA to come back to the Peace talks table on many many occasions, but we've also removed road blocks, put on a partial building freeze etc. It's the PA that is refusing to talk, and each time the US backs them they put up another "condition for talks". Why could Mitchell not just tell the truth?
22. Pressure
JM Gomez ,   Kerala, India   (01.10.10)
The root cause of Al-Qaeda's success in sowing terror worldwide is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The world is fed up with the slow pace of progress, if any,in resolution of this conflict. Israel's on-going policy of building settlements on land grabbed from Palestinian's is not helping the situation. The screw must be put on its leaders.
23. Mitchell's Big Stick
James ,   Jerusalem   (01.10.10)
Dispite the diplomatic retraction, George Mitchell articulated the real American policy toward Israel: claiming to be a friend but forcing dangeous concessions with an iron hand and making use of blackmail. It is not possible to consider the American envoy as an honest broker.
24. Well then, just stop taking it and sucking up to us...
George ,   U.S.A   (01.10.10)
Face it,your so called tough guy's in the IDF wont stand a chance without US military hardware. With out us,you are finished. There would be a lot of good coming out of that money,IF it would be spent wisely. And oh,cut the crap about giving us technology and all...
25. mitchell shows cards
tom ,   toronto, canada   (01.10.10)
despite the diplomatic doublespeak, this really is the thinking behind american middle east policy - paternalistic bullying. and it is the reality of american "foreign aid", which benefits america's military-industrial complex more than israel. witholding aid is a short-term tactic, not only because israel's american supporters will rally to oppose it, but also because israel can and will adapt. going "cold turkey" is unpleasant, but the last thing that a drug dealer wants is to shatter the illusion of dependency. perhaps the white house felt that it was safer to show this card than to play it - somewhat like the way obama never played the "race" card during the election. this was no accident, and george mitchell will be expendable if necessary.
26. Boeing and Lockheed Martin called
The Dude   (01.10.10)
The fact is that this statement from Mitchell is quite a devious and plainly stupid one for four reasons. 1. American aid guarantees are not supposed to be linked to anything. As an agreement they are meant to bolster Israeli military strength and to keep a qualitative edge because the US 'supposedly' views us as an ally who would help to keep regional stability and basically keep Anti-American forces in this area i.e. Hamas, Syria, Hizb'allah, and whatever alphabet soup of terror groups you got. 2. This threat is being watched very closely by numerous American allies. NATO, SKorea, Japan, and so on. The fact is that after the debacle of Georgia, where the US and NATO literally left the country, 'supposedly' an American ally as well, it makes a very clear statement to them as well. Were friends, but don't expect help in your time of need. And the fact is that now more and more countries are whispering whether they should build new alliances. Obamas attempts to wreck Israel, is going to be a disaster for other areas of American influence. I wouldn't be surprised to see Russia, NKorea, China, and Iran start to do more military adventurism, because hey one of the most 'famed' American allies in Israel is being ditched, why not E Europe & the Caucuses, SKorea, Japan, and the rest of the middle east as well? 3. The US does not have the power house economy to threaten things that could cause a large loss of jobs. America needs to keep as many domestic jobs as it can. 4. And finally this isn't for some noble cause, this for the facists, homophobic, racist, anti-semitic society of "Palestine". The people who danced on 9/11, who handed out sweets that day because it was 'great'. These people aren't American allies and aren't in American interests. The fact is that most people who support them aren't American allies as well and generally seek the destruction of the US after Israel. Why would you want to support such an effort? The US should be leading the way, especially with its history of exceptionalism, as a force where freedom rings! Not someone that views a society such as the Palestinians where its okay to 'honor' kill a woman because she dated a man of the wrong religion, clan, or nationality, versus Israeli society where we regularly hold the gay rights parade, women hold high positions of public office (one was even the PM!), and a place where African refugees run Egyptian bullets just to have a taste of freedom. The fact is that the ultimate sign of the best societies to live in are where people seek to be refugees. While the Palestinians try to portray as something viscous, the boatloads of African and at one time Vietnamese refugees speaks volumes! Oh by the way how many refugees are seeking to go to the Arab world?
