Two revolutionary changes were introduced by Chazal in defining the "Jewish tribe" or, to be more precise, in defining the religious Jewish community: 1. This fact needs no proof, for anyone who reads the Tanach will find only relationships between fathers and children; for the most part the mother is not even mentioned. This is the lineage of Peretz: Peretz begot Hezron, Hezron begot Ram, Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, Nachshon begot Salmon, Salmon begot Boaz [who married Ruth the Moabite], Boaz begot Obed, Obed begot Jesse, and Jesse begot David. (Ruth 4) If you continue the lineage of David you will see that David married Ma'akah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur and their son was Abshalom (II Samuel 3:3). There are many other such examples in the Scriptures. But Chazal, for reasons known only to them, their time, and their locale, decided to change the situation and ruled a person's being "Jewish" based on the mother, in contrast to the Scriptural rule. To keep themselves from being seen as deniers of the Scriptures Chazal applied the power of "medrash" -- a method of exegesis through medrash which uproots and negates the simple meaning of the Scriptures. It uses the simple language "admitted to the congregation" (Deuteronomy 23:9) without explaining how this happens. Chazal, as was their wont, "demand" that which they wish and decided that the conditions for joining the Jewish religion are circumcision, immersion in a ritual bath, and the bringing of a sacrifice. There are other reasons for the drop in conversions. Two are: many non-Jews here see that they can be full citizens without the need to be a Jew, and also that many of these people do not want to be observant, so why bother to convert? I myself know many converts who observe nothing, so I consider their conversion to be a lie. And, they can always go to Cyprus to marry. We must do everything we can to keep this country Jewish, but that does not mean being so lenient with conversions.

We love true converts because of their commitment and courage. We are suspicious because to make such a great commitment with such courage is exceedingly rare. The wonderful converts I have known are truly dedicated and sincere individuals, par excelence. But there are those who, somehow, got "converted" who have been nothing but a bothersome thorn in our skin. Whoever "let them in" without thoroughly investigating their true motives deserves serious reprimand. The facts of the real world are that many converts enter through other sects of Orthodox Judaism that aren't button-down in line with your sect's set of interpretations. You give the impression that only your sect's converts, those converted by your sect's Orthodox rabbis, are "true" converts. I recognize this may not be your position; but it surely IS the position of many Orthodox Jews and, it seems to me, nearly all Ultra-Orthodox. You don't grasp converts. You should develop a better appreciation for that. First of all, there is no such thing as a "convert." There are Jews (more accurately, Yisraeil), gentiles, and geirim: non-Jews having a special status while in training to convert. Once converted, however, even the most rudimentary knowledge of Halakhah demonstrates that one is NEVER permitted to refer to their conversion again. Halakhah forbids referring to them as "converts." They are Jews. NO different than "born Jews." Any departure from this--which is Halakhah--is racism. This also applies to excision. There can be no distinction between Jew and Jew. Torah requires excision for a number of violations of Torah; NO distinction between Jew and Jew. There are those who converted to marry. THEY are the ones most likely to conform to your (stated) view of "true" converts. They are not oriented to Mosheh and Har Sinai. They are oriented toward their spouse and their neighbors: pleasing you, NOT ha-Sheim. "True" converts? You have a superficial view, peering through distorted lenses. I had a teacher here in Israel warn the converts who were not Dati that they would never be accepted. At the time I was. If you do a conversion in the IDF, you will never be accpted as a convert.
