1. why not simply golan for non-aggression-pact with syria ?

2. Peace can be brokered only if the Golan remains Israeli!
Ron B. ,   Lod   (05.18.10)
If Syria wants peace with Israel, it should offer in exchange the Golan. There is no doubt that for Syria the benefit of peace will be tremendous. The Golan represent for Israel more security than “peace” with Syria. As “peace” with Syria will not happen, there is no reason for Israel to be generous with the Mafia regime of Assad. The Assad family has established a hereditary dynasty shored up by repression within, and confrontation and terror abroad. The rule of the Assads is not aimed at improving the lot of their people or forwarding a particular ideology. They changed ideology from secular Arabism to a seemingly impossible confection of pan-Arabism and Islamist extremism. It is pointless to “engage” Syria in dialogue except insofar as it is possible to confront them with their violations and insist that they mend their ways. 3. The Golan – a paramount strategic asset for Israel.
Ron B. ,   Lod   (05.18.10)
Apart from the clear operational advantage that the Golan’s topography provides the IDF, the intelligence gathering value of the area – particularly the ridge of hills on its eastern fringes and from atop Mt. Hermon (aptly dubbed “the eyes of the country”) is indispensable. There is wide agreement among experts that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to find adequate substitute to compensate for the loss of the intelligence installations stationed there. Nowadays, the Golan is an integrated region of Israel : http://xrl.us/bjvii

19. Good on Syria
Canadian ,   Toronto, Canada   (05.18.10)
As a Canadian, its in my opinion, and the opinion of a good portion of the public that Israel is not acting for peace. I think they show this shamelessly in this case. Israel has no right to discourage diplomatic ties with Iran, Iran is an international signatory of the UN and it is only our lovely Western governments that truly hate Iran. The rest of the world, Asia, Russia, especially seem to side with Iran on a range or moral issues, and honestly seem to have more in common with them than they do the West.
20. GOLAN...IRAN..
Ali ,   villanova -PA- USA   (05.18.10)
Syria will not go for this....and Israel knows this... The Syrians will get the GOLAN sooner or later...HOW..Israel will LOOSE it.. Israel is NOT REALLY interested in PEACE....OPTION....WAR.. The US will stand on the sidelines..
21. Regimes like Syria's & Iran's can't survive in peace
Joe ,   Canada   (05.18.10)
Regimes like those ruling Syria or Iran cannot survive in times of complete peace because they are then judged by their populace on the only thing that maters to the average person: standard of living which is almost never the high point of dictators. So they need scapegoats to distract their people from the real root cause of their miseries & from their loss of liberty. In the case of Syria the Assad family issued from a minrity clan has taken hold of the country like a mafia & tried to stay in power & to get external financial & political suport by playing one country against an other & being a troublemaker for one country or an other. In other words a regime that survives by being a variable but perpetual threat used as a racket at the government level .
22. To Peres
Mike Van Harris ,   Antwerp Belgium   (05.18.10)
Mr Peres we offer you New Hamshire, USA for Palestine .
23. #16 IN RESPONSE SIR

24. End ties (sort of). Get Golan. Reestablish ties.
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (05.18.10)
Israel has legal claim to the Golan both according to the original Mandate of 1922 and by the generally accepted laws of war. Israel *needs* the Golan both for its essential security and to secure its access to essential water. But the very paradigm is so foolish it takes someone like Peres to believe it. Syria's ties with Iran and its terror associates are essential to the survival of the current regime. Yes, there are some on the Israeli side that will believe anything, even accept some fig leaf that they can promote as a sign of Syrian intent. But that just means they need to resign or be relieved of duty.
25. Not a US Puppet
Ralph Levy ,   USA   (05.18.10)
Peres who is also a Obama puppet how is he able to make concessions he was never elected. http://israelprotect.blogspot.com
26. And what do we get?
Golan ,   modiin   (05.18.10)
This is so stupid. Israel is willing to give up anything just to give up land, security, brain cells, future.... In the 1990's they said land is not a strategic asset. in 2006 they found out that only land battles can end missile attacks. To give up strategic land is like giving up armor or air power.
27. The Golan and Peres
shepen ,   Caesarea, Israel   (05.18.10)
Mr. Peres is short sighted and does not reflect the attitude of the Israeli people when it comes to the Golan. Why bdoesn't he throw in hih9s left arm to cement the deal. It sounds poorly thought out and reflects weakness and almost desparation, not strength. It is strength that is respected in this neighborhood.
28. Peres Maneuvers
daat y ,   jerusalem   (05.18.10)
The main point of the article is the continued maneuvers and machinations of Peres. It is against Israeli law for the President to say anything that are government decisions.
29. I OFFER THE SYRIANS PERES
LAWRENCE ,   SAFED ISRAEL   (05.18.10)
There is no fool like an old fool and the syrians can keep him.
30. CANADIAN
NEWYORKONE   (05.18.10)
While you are correct that Iran is an international signatory of the UN, please don't forget that Israel is one also. It is therefore extraordinary that when the president of Iran makes speeches predicting the end of Israel, no action is taken by that body. Israel has the right, as do all states, to take whatever measures are necessary to protect its security. Please note that Israel threatens no one-it is the constant cacophony of Arab and Muslims states that have been trying to destroy her since 1948. As for moral issues, nations that side with Iran are to be pitied. Remember how the recent presidential election in Iran was stolen by the mullahs, and how the population was brutally suppressed? Other nations have a long way to go before they can preach morality. It's better to be in the minority that protects Israel, a democratic country whose opposition freely riles against the government, than such a "rest of the world."
