61. Gaza supplies
Ernest   (06.02.10)
Articles written make it sound like Gaza is getting what they need. Is it possible to get information about this from inside Gaza? And, Gilad Shalit should be freed. There have already been men and women let free from Israeli jails. Men that are or were Hamas legislators.
62. #3 - but no one dying from starvation there
William ,   Israel   (06.02.10)
If 100 trucks get in and it meets their needs, albeit not to the level that they want, then it's enough trucks. Per Intl Law, Israel does not need to provide any more aid except that will is necessary to sustain life. That means it can and should cut the fuel and electricity back. Part of the issue of this flotilla is that they did NOT want their aid inspected, which necessitated a boarding. My guess is that flak jackets, night goggles, etc. are NOT necessary to sustain life there. Besides - Gazans voted for Hamas. They support their war crimes and genocidal goal on Israel, so why not share in the suffering of their esteemed leaders?
63. #26 - cite the place in the Talmud
William ,   Israel   (06.02.10)
or do you expect us to just believe your lies because you say so?
64. #27 - the aggressor is the flotilla
William ,   Israel   (06.02.10)
they were used with the intention of breaking a military blockade during war-time. That justifies and obligates a boarding per San Remo Convention outlying exceptions to protection of ships at sea. Had they just accepted coming to Ashdod for inspection, they could have continued onward to Gaza - people and all. They rejected it. A clear provocation.
65. #6, are you for real? you are confusing Israel and Hisbollah
(06.02.10)
66. Sorry too simple
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (06.02.10)
The Arabs have lied about everything. They get up in front of the World Health Organization and claim that we invented AIDS, created DNA based weapons, poison wells, etc and the world ALWAYS believe each and every moronic lie. The world doesn't care about the facts. As long as 'The Jooosss' are involved they will rewrite international laws and history.
67. to #2 - Mohammed
Gabriel ,   Montreal   (06.02.10)
No Mr. Walt is NOT Angry. In fact is in a VERY Festive mood. Arabs give him a WONDERFUL opportunity to show to the world that being a liar and deceitful is part of Arab Mentallity and Culture. We are so Diffrent Mohammed. THat is exactly why we dont call ourself Mohammed!!!! Yet I agree with you the author do NOT care about arab well being... The arabs can manage themselves.
68. I nominate VIDEO for Oscar(Best Cinematography)

69. Culture of lies?
London man ,   London   (06.02.10)
The author talks of " the Arab culture of lies" and "this Arab mentality prevents any genuine process of self-reflection". Let's just ask the big question. This culture of lies and the mentality prevening any self-reflection is really applicable to the ideology of the Zionist state where a great proportion of the Jewish residents completely, totally and absolutely refuse to acknowledge that there was a "nakba" or catastrophe in 1948, they refuse to acknowledge that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were expelled, that the indigenous inhabitants of the land owned assets and land, they refuse to acknowledge that these hundreds of thousands of people were anything more than "squatters on the land". When it comes to talk about the price of lies, let's look at Israel's policy of assassination (surely Mossad have lied about their involvement), about the siege of Gaza ("it's not a siege") about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza ("what humanitarian crisis"), about the civilian deaths in Lebanon ("what civilians?"), about the civilian deaths during operation Cast Lead ("what civilians"?), etc, etc ad infinitum. It is perfectly clear that no side has a monopoly on the truth - but for this author to imply that in the game of realpolitik it is only the Israeli state which tells the truth is patent nonsense. To go further and imply that somehow this is part of the "Arab mentality" is really no more than a piece of nonsense. To prove that the "Israeli mentality" is more polished at presenting lies as truth, we only have to ask any Israeli politican about Israel's nuclear arsenal. I would suggest that the policy of public ambiguity on the matter is, in any other words, a lie - a lie that has been repeated every since Mr Vanunu presented proof to the Sunday Times. So - lying? Look to put your own house in order.
70. :: Famous last words
Matty Groves ,   Fairport   (06.02.10)
"And so, the Gaza-bound thugs got nowhere close to the Strip. Soon they will be swept aside and forgotten in the Mideastern maelstrom, as bigger news take over" There are already news reports of a second, much large flotilla being organized to sail to Gaza in a few weeks. The people of Gaza will not be forgotten so quickly and people all over the world are determined to keep the issue of Israel's illegal siege of Gaza on the World agenda for a long time yet. I would also add that Erdogan has stated that future flotillas bound for Gaza territorial waters under Israeli threat would be accompanied by a military escort to ensure their safety.
71. A lie repeated often enough can become believable.
Ron B. ,   Lod   (06.02.10)
In the tradition of Goebbels, whose approach was that a lie repeated often enough can become believable, the Hamas web site FreeGaza.org is bringing hearing aids for Gaza children whose hearing has been impaired by… rockets that Israel is firing at Arab villages in Gaza. It may be hard to imagine that after eight years of Gazans firing Kassam rockets at Sderot and the Western Negev, the FreeGaza.org support network, now firmly established in Gaza, will try to convey the opposite message, and convince the world that Israel is murdering the children of Gaza. To understand what is a irreconcilable enemy : http://xrl.us/omz3z
72. those thugs
sonia ,   Jerusalem israel   (06.02.10)
will certainly be forgotten as bigger news takes over. Pals are going nowhere unless they humble themselves and admit they need the power of Hashem and the chosen people.
73. Change the game plan
harveygarfield21@aol ,   LONDON   (06.02.10)
Place the Palestinians / world on 12 month notice that the blockade is to be lifted .At the same time make it clear that Israel is no longer responsible for the provision through its borders of goods ,food ,medicines , electricity gas, oil ,etc water and that henceforth everything has to come in through Egypt . The madness that currently sees Israel providing its Islamist enemy with sustenance is beyond parody . 12 months is more then enough time for the UN to get their act together and make alternative arrangements for this terrorist enclave. Of course when the first rocket lands ,Israel can then take appropriate measures without the usual fools gallery crying foul as Gaza would no longer be under blockade .
74. And Israelis don't lie????...
Mikesailor ,   Miami, FL   (06.02.10)
Anyone who believes this writer is willing to believe anything. Truly Pathetic. The inability of Israelis to face the truth, to embrace reality is endemic. Of course, it must be the entire world that is wrong, never Israel. Israeli contribution to your own problems is never examined. It is always the fault of the 'other', 'leftists', Arabs, Europeans, Turks, self-hating Jews' etc. The list of your 'enemies' is apparently endless and, according to the weak-minded Israelis, theu are all guilty of 'lying'..
75. well well well
marco delaoro ,   Nahareeya   (06.02.10)
Nice to read about this issue and beeing able to get opinions from different sides. It is already a good thing. I would add only two things: 1/ why is the border closed with egypt brothers? with jewish part, understood but with egypt? why they close the door? 2/ muslims and jews should unite in huge strength of right to left writing people, of people who do circumcision and believe in one God and get rid of western influence.
76. Arab or Muslim lies
JUDAH THE LION   (06.02.10)
in the koran it is written that muslims are allowed to lie and to decieve to kafers (INFIDEL).
77. Matty
John ,   Herzliya, Israel   (06.02.10)
Eh, Matty, Matty..When you will get clear with one thing: the problem is Hamas and their agenda of destroying Israel and not people of Gaza. But, continue with your leftist propaganda, as I said, I just hope that one day you will have Hamas in your garden. I would like to hear you then.
78. # 73
John ,   Herzliya, Israel   (06.02.10)
This sounds to me as one of the best possible solutions.
79. no 58 from Jordan
Rick   (06.02.10)
What old argument? When you wanted Israel to leave Gaza, they finally did. They were met with 5000 missiles over the next year. They pulled out their settlers and army, which everybody said they should do. All Hamas had to do was leave them the hell alone. Bashar, let me ask you what you would do if you pulled out completely and they shelled your towns? What choice did they leave Israel? But most importantly, again, what would you have been able to do differently?

83. Bashar from Jordan (roots)
Rick   (06.02.10)
I did not ignore your comments and would never ignore legitimate questions. However, are you ignoring the main question I am asking in #79 as many of my Arab acquaintences and friends (yes, that's true) so do? I have yet to see an anti-Israel individual provide a logical answer to "what would you do if you were Israel"? (Of course, may have said such useful things, such as "I would jump into the sea", "I would move to American", etc). Have a nice day.
84.  ..... continued from previous
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (06.02.10)
(sorry -- accidentally hit "submit") .... the legend as the Arabs tell it has grown to over 400 heavily-armed Jewish settlers attacking 10 unarmed Arabs. Of course, the legend goes on to say that they fought valiantly and killed many, many Jews -- with their bare hands -- and over time, the legend grows. This same affliction is the genesis for the mythical olive groves and mythical orchards and mythical vineyards. Self-delusion. We saw it in the Six Day War, too. Egypt was defeated in the opening hours of the war -- their air force completely destroyed -- but the news on Cairo radio went something like this: "At this very moment, our brave pilots are punishing Tel Aviv and Haifa. Akko lies in ruins. Our glorious troops are advancing with no resistance, and by nightfall we shall join with our brother Hussein at the Jordan River." They also managed to turn 1973 into a victory. Not quite sure how -- I'm not Arab and I'm not a psychiatrist. But if their delusions of grandeur and inability to recognize reality for what it is benefits Israel -- and it does -- while creating ever increasing fragmentation in the Arab community -- and it has -- then I really don't have a problem. Let them have all the mythical victories and bravery in the face of "overwhelming odds" that they want. Let them plant ever more mythical olive groves. The truth is readily available to anyone who reads history and first-hand accounts. Says something, though, that Israel preparing to march on Cairo and Damascus in Israeli gunsights in 1973 is interpreted as a "great victory." I wish them many, many more such "victories."
85. I am disgusted [a re-post].
k1w1 ,   NZ   (06.02.10)
The massacre of civilians by the IDF and the way it has been handled in Israel, the way it has been related in the Israeli media and the Israeli public reaction in general, is nothing short of absolutely despicable. The IDF attack in international waters on unarmed civilians who had posed no threat to anyone was an atrocity by any account, and in any normal, decent country, the government responsible for committing such an act would have reason to be concerned about the internal reaction. But not in Israel. In Israel there has been near universal support in the media and from the public for this criminal act. The confrontation has been termed a “battle” and the IDF commandos have been described as “heroes” who were “ambushed” in a “trap” and had to defend themselves from being “lynched” after they were confronted with “extreme violence” by an “armed” crowd of “thugs” or “terrorists” who posed a threat to the security of Israel. And the “proof” is that the activist defended themselves. The only thing the flotilla posed a threat to was the illegal siege imposed on Gaza by Israel and Egypt. But in Israel the activists on the flotilla, who include an 81-year-old US Ambassador and an 89-year-old Holocaust survivor, have been portrayed as “militants” in “league with Hamas and al Qaeda”. It’s ludicrous. Following the aspiration of a building a moral, egalitarian, democratic society in the middle east distinguished from its barbaric neighbours, an outpost of western civilisation, Israel has now gone native, is now of a character with those who surround it rather than of those who support it, a country where a thuggish brute like Liebermann is the Foreign Minister and whose citizens condone and applaud every act of state terrorism. As for the international reaction to this latest atrocity committed by Israel: a lot of noise but really not much else. The US response has been predictably pathetic, while the UNSC statement (thanks to the US) didn’t even name Israel. Every country with nationals aboard the flotilla who were kidnapped and forcibly taken to Israel should have demanded that their citizens be immediately released without condition and withdrawn their diplomats from Tel Aviv until such time. And those responsible for ordering the attack on an unarmed, civilian vessel sailing in international waters should at the very least face charges of piracy and kidnapping. But don’t hold your breath. By and large, with US complicity, Israel will get away with this crime relatively unscathed, and the people of Israel and it’s supporters around the world will continue being proud of Israel’s crimes and will continue to support the dark regime that perpetrates them. Good one, Israel. I am disgusted.
86. To # 2
Brad ,   USA   (06.02.10)
The reason for the article is that the truth needs to be told. It needs to be told over and over again. You say you agree with what Yigal Walt has to say, but you chastise him for saying it because it won't make the Arabs improve. So what? The world needs to see and hear the truth because the mainstream press hides it. If you truly agreed with Walt, you would've commended him for exposing the truth without criticizing him with your sarcasm.
