1. we have to agree....
(06.16.10)
I don't get it, here in the USA we have separate school for the Sephardi and Ashkenazi students, they have many differences in the way they live according to Halocha, i.e. eating rice on Pesach etc. so why can't it be understood in Israel that they need separate schools just like in the rest of the world. Next: in the eyes of the Chradim....who gives the right to the Israeli secular court system to advise the religious Jews as how to educate their children? the court is governed ONLY by those who could not care less about the Torah laws, and the community in Emanuel are Torah observers, the right thing would be to put this situation in the hands of the Gedolim - leaders-Rabbis and ad-hear to their Psak. I think what the Israeli government is trying to do here, is the following; they are trying to get their hands into the religious schooling system (boys and girls) and slowly sway them from the Torah way of life, as the government has done in the past, It's scary but if the court wins on this one, they will continue to destroy all the religious schools in Israel, give them some time and the job will get done, the only choice will be is to close ALL of the religious schools who are supported by the state of Israel, before they have a chance to Chas VeSholom bring down the rest of Klall Yisroel. In my opinion it might be a great idea to consider the idea of Home schooling, this way you know exactly where and what your child is up to. There is no other alternative to this horrible decree. We are in living in the days of the arrival of Moshiach and the Yatzer is doing what ever he can to destroy the small amount of Yiddishkite still left in the world, we have to be strong and Daven to Heshem, ONLY Hashem can and will help us greet Moshiach.
2. The right to choose
Hasidic Parent ,   Jerusalem Israel   (06.16.10)
Haredi Parents have the right to choose the type of education for their children just like every other sector . No school is forced to accept every child that applies if they do not fit into the ethos of the school. In this country we do not have one public school for all , but each stream Secular , Religeous and Haredi has their own stream . Thus this is again the ruling of the secular judicial system using the courts to impose their secular world view on the Haredim rather than trying to find compromise and consensus
3. Disgusting
Yerach ,   Jerusalem,Israel   (06.16.10)
That Sephardic students should be discriminated against. The Chabad Beit Rivkah system welcomes all Jewish girls Ashkenazic or Sephardic & all are together & in unity. This so so un-Jewish!!!!
4. The usual story: State of Israel against its Jews
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim,   (06.16.10)
5. I recently finished Umberto Eco's
Erastus CoupeDeVille ,   Ong's Hat, NJ USA   (06.16.10)
"The Name of the Rose", "Baudolino" and "The Island of the day before"... can I please be governmentally recompensed to spend the next several years delving into the author's obscure references to arcane wisdom? I believe that the search for wisdom would overwhelm all secular needs and desires (daily family needs would be provided by "the deity") and would eventually provide the state with incomprehensible/graduate-student-like BS. Can I grow long sideburns and wear 17th century eastern european clothing in a desert environment to distinguish myself as a scholar of esoterica?
6.  "war on the Jewish character"
Keren ,   IL-BR   (06.16.10)
I believe this should not be a "war"but its opposite. I don't know the Halachic details, but I think that as long as all kids are Jews,a compromise should happen and they should learn all together. Unfortunately,we don't live yet in a pure an perfect world and if those not so halachicly correct(according to the rules of Emmanuel) boys want to attend a school with more rigid rules, that mean that their parents accept in a way or another those rules.So... It is a matter of a bit patience and compromise. Remember:Ahavat Israel! Israel has too much problems;we should struggle to be in peace among ourselves. Unfortunately, the more religious will not be reading talkbacks to,ulai, get some inspiration in flexibility...
7. supreme court ruling
David Teichman ,   New York   (06.16.10)
As an american reading this story I can only come to one conclusion. The one defying democracy is the Israeli Supremen Court. The Court ruled that this is ethnic discrimination. Fine. the parents do not agree so they removed their children from the government supported school and sent the children to a diffenent school. What is wrong with that. In the US we would not tolerate the federal or state government dictating to us which school to send our children to. The problem in israel is that there is no real constitution or bill of rights and the High court feels that everyone has to listen to their rulings no matter how much it is against individual rights,
8. Legalists slam haredi parents' defiance
jacques ,   nsw   (06.16.10)
very sad one nation two different people. one think he is superior from the other. there is 12 Jewish tribe and one tribe in particular is the cause to this friction to this day
9. #1 Excuses excuses
Aharon   (06.16.10)
Nu beemet, do you expect anyone to believe this nonsense? Why do Sephardic and Ashkenazi students need separate entrances to the school? Why are they not allowed to play together during breaks? This is the very definition of apartheid, so don't give us this nonsense about how one group can eat rice and the other can't - you look ridiculous. Next: The Charedim live in the State of Israel. It is a sovereign state, with laws. It has a right to impose those laws, whether they accord with Haredi sensibilities or not. And the Haredim, as citizens, are obliged to follow them. If they are unable to do so, they should leave. It is very simple.
10. ABSURD
TSB ,   Clifton, NJ USA   (06.16.10)
The "end of democracy" is when you have a cabal of unelected judges decide to order parents how to educate their children and force them to send them to a school they believe will harm their children's education. This is Communism! BGTZ, come down from the tree you have climbed on! You have violated basic human rights which are millenia old! Every Torah believing Jew must rise in protest! If this ruling stands, the State owns your children and can dictate their education! (Secular parents should also be concerned. The State is asserting its authority over your children. But most won't be, since they will enjoy sticking it to the haredim.)
11. Police refuse S.C Order everyday on Temple Mount
Yosef ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.16.10)
Everyday the police on the Temple Mount refuse to implement a Supreme Court order, which prohibits discriminating searches and police and wakf escorts for religious Jews. I guess the Haredim are just learning from the police on this one.
12. To #1
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot   (06.16.10)
You have it all wrong. The Passover rullings on the use of rice & kitneyot are and were location oriented rulings. In fact the Rabbis of the time of banning kitneyot were against this ban. But more important Israel is not the Dispora and all Jews must be united as one, just as in the days of the Jerusalem Talmud, before the Babylon Talmud was even started. We need to come togeather as 1 nation and leave the gallut behind. Every effort must be made to prevent those who would perpetuate the gallut from succeeding. We must be Israeli not Sephardi and Ashkenazi.
13. "here in the USA" #1:
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/ Canada   (06.16.10)
It's obvious you don't comprehend the situation in Israel. We need to be united and the children must grow up to recognize that there are other Jews who do not practice exactly like them but are as genuine in their Judaism as they are. Our differences are minor compared to the the Jewish plight vis a vis the Muslim entity in the Mideast. As you reside in the USA, you simply don't understand why it's important to stand together as you are under no threat. Please stop telling Israelis how they should live!
14. To #1
J K ,   NYC, USA   (06.16.10)
Nice try, but these school are accepting money from the Israeli government, and just like in the states, if you accept money from the government, it comes with strings, like not discriminating. I remember the whole hullaballoo here in NY upstate when the Monsey bus was taking state funds and put up the mechitza. It took a plucky Russian woman a lawsuit to get them to amend what they were doing. The issue here is, if the schools want to discriminate as they like, DON'T TAKE STATE MONEY. It's quite simple.
15. Not even the government abides by High Court Rulings
Yishai Cohen ,   TA, Israel   (06.16.10)
When the Government itself openly refused to enforce or abide by the High Court rulings, it effectively rendered their rulings irrelevant, which is why today few if any Israelis respect the High Courts power.
16. Dr Martin Luther King Jr, Dr MLK , Dr MLK
simon ,   USA   (06.16.10)
Since when, is a judiciary ABSOLUTELY right?, Cant a judiciary make mistakes? How about the assumtion that all religious rabbis and judges have have NO fairmindedness? That is also a secular judiciary absolute! The fact is, that seculars do not see religion as a matter of importance, what they see with their vision within people, is racial and materialistic variations only, and therefore they see others judging others, accordingly. Its time for all of us to see the light and integrity of the Torah and its sincere Rabbis. Thank You
17. #1 Difference is - you cant kick them out bec they Sephardic
Sami   (06.16.10)
In America, you cannot simply kick out a kid from school due to them being Sephardic, likewise one shouldn't be allowed to do this in Israel.
18. Insanity!!!!!
Robin ,   US   (06.16.10)
I can see the court saying this is a govt run school accept our rules. But putting parents in jail for deciding to send their kids elsewhere. As a parent YOU decide how to educate your kids, not the courts.
19. Private schools can discriminate against those who dont want
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (06.16.10)
to follow their rules. From those who agree to the charaidi rulebook - about 30% are Sefardi origin. The charaidis are not discriminating based on race, rather by personal choice. This is fair. The supreme court is forcing their personal version of social manipulation. It wont work. The people are threatening to abandon their neighborhood..
20. refusal to followi ruling is democracy at its best.
Lemmings Hotline ,   sd usa   (06.16.10)
Protest is the spirit of freedom, especially non violent protest
21. Throw all of them to jail and throw away the key!
seculatr Israeli   (06.16.10)
22. to #1
Susan ,   Kfar Saba   (06.16.10)
The reason the state can get involved is because these are not private schools, they get state funding. If they want to fund themselves somehow, they can do whatever they want. In the US a public school cannot discriminate, but a totally privately funded one can accept whoever they want. Here in Israel the modern orthodox kids all learn together, there isn't a problem of rice on Passover or anything like that(there is no school on Passover, so food is not an issue). The atmosphere is very nice and the kids are all friends. They learn to respect their different cultures. My daughter liked to go to her Yeminite friend's house and eat their food.
23. T0 # 1
Yehudi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.16.10)
What you do in the U.S. is irrelevant to the situation in Israel. The Charedi Ashkenazim in Israel (Chabad aside) hold strong racist attitudes towards Sephardim and Arabs. I live here and I am totally disgusted and ashamed at the behavior of many, but not all, Charedi groups who purport to speak in the name of "Torah true Judaism." May G-d save us from these ignorant and bigoted people!
24. #1
J B ,   City of Israel   (06.16.10)
I hear what your saying that its important to hold on to our "yiddishkeit" but its your total suspicion that the secular want to take it away and remove your children from the "torah way" that makes you unable to see that the secular court is just trying to end discrimination. something that is a huge "avera" . it says in halacha that you have to follow the rules of the land unless it goes against jewish law... so its the same here too in israel. recognise that you can't live without the state and the state can't live without you. um yisrael chai!
25. Defying the High Courts
Helen ,   ISRAEL   (06.16.10)
The problem can be solved very easily just stop paying them state taxes to their educational system which anyway doesn't prepare them to be independent and contributing citizens of the state.
26. #1 wonderful distortions
Yosi ,   GiloJerusalem Israel   (06.16.10)
unfortunately the paint you are using is the wrong color. This is not about rice and kidniot, this is about racial hatred. My nephew lives in Emmanuel and the attitude of the Ashkanazim is hateful and unreasoning. No one brought up any halacha that would be pertinent in a discussion as to why there should be this seperation. It has been in the past and is now about skin color.
27. I like the ad for the vampire movie
hanina   (06.16.10)
It represents how we are trying to suck blood from each other.
28. 'should be punished' why not DEFINITELY punished?
Talula ,   Israel   (06.16.10)
Time to put an end to their racist disgusting and hateful behaviour - in schools, on the streets and just about everywhere else.
29. If they don't want to obey the laws
Chaya ,   Bat Yam   (06.16.10)
They can leave the country!! The men don't work; they don't serve in the army; they live off of the State!! And now they don't even respect the High Court??? Just leave!
30. Racism
Secular parent ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.16.10)
#2 You have the right to choose but you don't have the right to be a racist and discriminate against anyone because they are not the same as you. I hope the Supreme Court fulfills its decisoon to put everyone in jail. You also have the choice to obey the law and you also have the choice to leave Israel. I would like to see you disobey a United States hight court ruling !!!!!!!
