I know now why Ashkenasim do not used the word "כבוד"
2. Sephardic/Ashkenazi
Ros ,   Tel Aviv   (06.27.10)
Such a tragedy to befall the Jewish people! How can Rabbi Ovadia Yosef say there is a difference between Ashkenazi and Sephardi teaching - knowing all the people who follow him and listen and act on his every word - shame on him!!!
3. pffffffff he is funny, what happened when
ghostq   (06.27.10)
a child is hald spfared hald Ashkenaz, this is very racist and stupid, after all jewish mind is jewish mind, instead of unite jews this dumb dumb make everything in his power to isolate his community. If you ask me there souldn't be ashkenaz sphared praying verion, there should be one Israeli Praying verion and all this bla bla will be over, I hope Israelis will come to their senses and return to the real Judaism, much like king david who united the tribes wanted them as whole and for jerusalem, this rabbi betray his own religion.
4. Thank you!!!
Yehoshua Bader ,   Safed, Israel   (06.27.10)
B"H Thank you Rabbi Yosef. Sephardi discrimination is a fact and you said it very diplomatically. And yes, why send our children to an Ashkenazi School? What about our rich tradition? It is time to relcaim it!!!
5. Haredim
Barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (06.27.10)
Let's go one step further with this rigmarole of religious / racial discrimination and enroll Ethiopians into their schools. Segregate the lot of them. Why not even coed ? Any schools that Ashkenazi or Sepharadi want separated on their terms should be privately paid by themselves.
6. Rigt, respond to their racial discrimination with your own
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & New York   (06.27.10)
This is not how to solve the problem of racial discrimination. This is how some African countries went from ruling white minorities to persecuted white minorities. You need to work together to bridge the gaps not dig them deeper.
7. Racism
Best Rabbi Yosef ,   jerusalem   (06.27.10)
Best Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, it is truth so truth that there is racism in the azhkenazim communities around the world (yeshivi/litanians mostly)and here too in Israel, and it is not easy because they are after all a powerful mayority 80% of the jewish population in the world are ashkenazim and they have most of the money. But dearest Rabbi Ovadia, you have to take in concideration that bigamy in the sephardic communities may be an important factor for the down/krash down of the sephardic mizrahi culture. and may have something to do with that things about drugs consumme? Best Sweet Rabbi Yosef, in ashkenazim communities you cannot imagen how corrupted they really are, I know that very well. so please do something about this now! and change renew and take Rabbi Gershon advices/pasuks in concideration, like very wisly sefardim from Spain did a long time a go. Maybe will see some changes for the good inside the sephardic little world. Today I wouldent marry a sephardic jew no matter what, and do you know why Rabbi? because I don't trust in their Torah education, I want to have a good life and peaceful healthy beautiful life as a jewish woman..... But i wouldent marry a nazi either for that matter. be well best rabbi Yoisef G'd bless you and please...Help Us now!
8. i agree exactly
yoheved ,   north miami beach, f   (06.27.10)
i agree exactly with Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ... my father's family were originally Sephardic that came centuries ago to Bilgoray in Poland ... they eventually became 'Ashkenazied' through everything from heder to language - after a few centuries, they spoke fluent yiddish. my great-grandfather got out before the war (thank G-d) ... he was so special in our family... part of that was his sephardic ancestry. even though i am 'mixed' i would have loved if my Sephardic past was known... Sephardic torah and teachings are special. Never lose them ... you might not be able to get them back ...
9. I see "Israel" is killing itself - from within
Nour ,   Palestine   (06.27.10)
No surprise to see racism and segragation being institutionalized - it's what's "Israel" was founded on to begin with. Very soon there will be Haredi school, sephardim school, secular schools, thai worker schools, with barb-wire walls between them. Keep it up folks.
10. Rav Yoseiph is right!
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (06.27.10)
And this has nothing to do with race or racism. It's ALL about the pristineness of Halakhah and faithfulness of traditions to Mosheh Rabeinu at Har Sinai. The traditions, cultures and Halakhah of the Teimanim, Mizrakhim and Sepharadim are MUCH more pristine and faithful to that of Har Sinai than the traditions, cultures, Halakhah--and even language--that has been tainted by assimilation into Europeanism. Europeanism is NOT Torah! Although they took very different paths, there were two primary products of European beliefs of superiority, both ugly: the Reform Movement and Nazism. For Sepharadim, Mizrakhim or Teimanim to descend from their rightful legacy of pristine Torah traditions into Europeanism is a yeridah. Sepharadim and MIzrakhim were on the same page with Teimanim in the time of Rambam. They are today--except when seduced by European supremism. Sepharadim, Mizrakhim-- and paramountlyTeimanim--are the most pristine traditions faithfully reflecting the tradition of Mosheh Rabeinu at Har Sinai. They should be proud and steadfast in that, not making yeridah because of social pressures of European supremism. One is not better than the other, th opposite one and the other gives Am Israel the Taam of co-existence in Shalom & Shalva! How many Ashkenazipolitician go to Mamoona fter Peasach???? Please give Ahavat Chinam a chance to thrive!!
12. Racism
Nathan   (06.27.10)
While I agree there is racism in Ashkenazi Yeshivot, as well as Ashkenazi society in general, we must also be vigilant against reverse Racism. Some of the statements in this article made by Ovadia Yosef are Very Racist. We are all JEWS!! Don't we have enough enemies in the world?
13. Oy Vey.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (06.27.10)
I'm half-Ashkenazi, half-Sephardi - I am more or less secular but I keep customs from both, more by whim than anything else. One thing I have to say is that our religious leaders, both Ashkenazi & Sephardi are quite a disappointment. Rabbis of all sorts generally turn me off big-time. And I'm not talking only of the Orthodox, Conservative & Reform are worse. I love my religion even if I'm not religious, I am firmly attached to our traditions. But I have to say that if anything can chase Jews away from Judaism, it's rabbis.
15. Silly ideas from a silly old man. Accent marks, indeed!
Scott ,   USA   (06.27.10)
16. not racism
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (06.27.10)
Inciting hatred is the easiest thing in the world. It seems some Talkbackers don't want to understand. There are different customs between various groups of Jews. Some people want to preserve their parents' custom, some people don't, it is that simple. An American of Japanese origin is not a racist because she wants to celebrate a traditional tea ceremony without chocolate chip cookies and dance music.

18. Religion slowly poisoning Israel
(06.27.10)
I don't know if this is a poor translation, but how can Ovadia imply that there are 2 different Torahs and how can he claim a difference between Ashkenazi and Sephardic "brains"- this is insane!! Abolish the Rabbinate and SEPARATE RELIGION FROM STATE NOW! Religion is obviously poisoning the country - enough is enough!
19. our Torah is not inferior to their Torah.
Pal ,   Plaestine   (06.27.10)
How many Torahs you have?!!!!
20. Ben-Gurion is to blame
Josh   (06.27.10)
While the Chareidim shortsightedly created some issues nonetheless this racist ideology did stem from the secular Ashkenazic "cultured" Zionists who looked down upon the "uncouth" Sephardim. Ben-Gurion said " I hate Arabs because they remind us of Sefardim".
21. I'm Mizrahi
Mike ,   Los Angeles   (06.27.10)
I am a Jewish Iranian and I think the Rabbi is completely out of line. There is obviously slight differences between teachings of Judaism in different parts of the world but to say there are different Torahs is just plain wrong. We all come from Avraham Isaac and Jacob and that is the bottom line
22. 21 Mike
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (06.27.10)
Do you think the "differences between teachings of Judaism" is not identical to differences in Torah she-B'al Peh? Or do you think that Torah she-B'al Peh is not part of Torah? There are even some differences in the respective Seipher Torah.

25. to #19 you don't have torah
ghostq   (06.27.10)
you have Koran, Torh(also old testament) is actually devided to 5 books: 1.Genesis, 2.Exodus, 3.Leviticus. 4. Numbers 5. Deuteronomy. and yes! jews and chritians pray from the same books.
26. to #20 david ben Gurion never said that
ghostq   (06.27.10)
and seculars weren't askenazis General Moshe Dayan wasn't askenazis, and another president wasn't, and today seculars got interesting mix. it's the ultra jewish orthodox who r racist.
27. to #9 stop blabing the sunis and shiia
ghostq   (06.27.10)
is in much worse shape, in Iraq they commit sucide bombing on weekly basis in each other mosques.
28. # 9
Birdi ,   Israel & proud of it   (06.27.10)
Yeah yeah yeah....as long as we dont have Palestinian schools here, I'll be happy. Btw, barbed wires can easily be cut.
29. #9 Nour.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (06.27.10)
While we may argue incessantly about religious questions, many of which are only exercises in futility or merely a religious figure protecting his ''constituancy'' to maintain influence, we don't murder each other, persecute unbelievers, kill apostates, bomb places of worship because they are supposed heretics. You see, our religion is not a totalitarian ideology. We argue a lot because we have a right to our opinions, we believe in free speech. With a few exceptions, we can argue without hating anyone, we tolerate diversity, we don't require absolute conformity. I can criticise religious figures & guess what? They won't issue a fatwa to kill me.
30. 21 - 22 is right, he even has his own personal version
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (06.27.10)
his own teachings which are foreign to jewish orthodoxy, and he claims to be orthodox. so there you are - you can believe whatever you want, even the cherry-picked teachings of jesus, and whichever interpretation you want and BANG! you are as good as orthodox (or nutzarim, whatever). as for me, i'm a christian but you could call my belief a stream of orthodox judaism. if nutzarim can be orthodox, then anyone can.
