Yisraeli   (07.02.10)
Dont be to quick to count your chickens. Its a good start that should already have happened a long time ago but better late then never. But dont think they will sit on their hands. They will try anything and everything to undermine the sanctions. Depends on the resolve of the world. They will be tested, lets just hope they hold steadfast and increase the stranglehold until the streets of Iran run wild looking to depose the Mullahs and all theyre henchman including that little monkey. Iranians the time of your liberation is fast approaching make sure you take that opportunity otherwise it may end up with a mushroom cloud which none of us want to see, even on yourselves.
2. Guy Bechor is too optimistic on effectiveness of sanctions
Joe ,   Canada   (07.02.10)
Even american leaders at the highest level have commented that the new UN sanctions won't be strong enough to deter Iran, Additional sanctions by the US & the EU will make economic life more difficult but won't be paralyzing as long as countries like China continue doing business with Iran especially in the field of refinery construction, field development, crude oil procurement & in return the suply of refined oil products. With the progressive withdrawal of US troops from Irak, the Ayatollahs are likely to get increasing support from their Shii friends in that country & it will not even be as easy to monitor what is moving on land as it on the sea where the UN allows inspections on international waters.
3. I think you have it wrong
Gerald ,   USA   (07.02.10)
Iran is an Energy Super power and that is not something many people can ignore. The only thing that has most probably happened is that the sale of iranian gas and oil is being done a bit more in the shadows. While of course the world is making it sound as if they are really doing harm to iran. The EU just signed some pretty lucrative contracts with the regime in iran. Makes you wonder.. Sure, some of the masses would suffer, but does that mean an end to the iranian regime as we know it? N.Korea is pretty much there and kicking,so is Cuba(after all these years) and etc. The Russians and Chinese made sure that the sanctions would be watered to a significant amount. It's really not all that troublesome for the regime.
4. Make it so Number One
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (07.02.10)
Most Iranians hate their regime. Anything else can't be as bad.
5. Turkey Is Next
CantStandYa ,   Canada   (07.02.10)
Mr Erdogan, your people will be next. You will fit in well with Syria, Lebanon and Nroth Korea and of coursae iran and the truly FREE World Will SMILE. I think the World has had enough of your monsterous idology
6. Irony alert: Obama opposed that law that is at last "biting"
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (07.02.10)
"At the end of June, the US Congress and Senate approved by a large majority a law banning global companies engaged in ties with Iran’s oil and gas industry from coming into the US." This is the same law that Obama kept trying to stall while he "engaged" with Iran, the same law he tried to jam full of loopholes and waiver provisions as part of his attempt to win over Russia, China and the EU.
7. or more terror
thommy ,   germany   (07.02.10)
because the iranians dont have to loose anything also china will never be against iran when we stop to build their oil industry china will be happy to do so
8. You are the first columnist whom I've
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (07.02.10)
read, Guy, who has pronounced the Iranian boycotts and refusals to do business to be so comprehensive, so profound and eventually to be so effective. Of course, I hope you are right. If, in fact, if the deathknell is now ringing for the current Iranian government, as you indicate, I would make one correction in your assessment. In the short term, the Iranian regime is more dangerous than ever and will make more provocative moves in its frenzy and irrationality than ever before while experiencing its death throes. So, I would suggest that Israel be ever more mindful at this time.
9. #3 - Iranians believe in democracy and spiritual leadership
redbourn ,   Arad Israel   (07.02.10)
The Iranian regime bases its legitimacy on two fundamental pillars. 1) Spiritual leadership. 2) The will of the people The masses no longer believe that the regime is giving spiritual leadership and they feel that they were cheated in the elections. The Iranian people are easily capable of overthrowing the regime and they were the ones that brought the regime to power. http://www.ourchangingglobe.com/ahmadinejad-has-far-greater-problems-than-u-n-sanctions/ There are no real similarities between Iran, N Korea and Cuba. Michael
10. suffocate,choke hold
Leonard ,   Los Angeles   (07.02.10)
This sounds like what the EU says Israel is doing to Gaza. I can't beleive the EU. is doing such a horrible thing to Iran..lol Israel come send aid to Iran...
11. Even Bill Clinton signed sanctions against iran
Peter ,   Vienna-Austria   (07.02.10)
But guess what,American firms to this day were doing business with iran. You see? This is just to please you and the people in charge know this very well. It's business as usual for everyone(except this time its being conducted on a more classified level)
12. More wishful thinking than analysis.
Terry ,   Eilat - Israel   (07.02.10)
First you mention Cuba. Do I need to remind you that the Communist regime is still in power? Second, you don't mention North Korea. There have been sanctions in place for many years. The regime is still in power, still has a nuclear program, still sells missile technology, & still threatens it's neighbors. And, it has a million-man army. You say Iran is isolated. Not true. Russia, China, Brazil, Venezuela, & others will more or less ignore sanctions. The Iranian regimes cares absolutely nothing for the well-being of their people. They will continue their nuclear program regardless of sanctions. I believe this article was written with only one purpose - to deflect people from calling for military action against Iran. This is Obama's policy, to prevent Israel from stopping Iran militarily. It is probably the view of our Defense Minister as well, you know, that guy who has always been wrong on every issue.
13. Mr. Hospitality
John ,   Boise, Idaho USA   (07.02.10)
How can the world be so cruel toward a man of such dignity and congeniality?
14. Will economic pressure change Iran’s behavior?
Ron B. ,   Lod   (07.02.10)
Ahmadinejad strategic challenge and nuclear ambitions has run Iran’s economy into the ground. Just a day after Ahmadinejad declared prices in decline, the Central Bank reported inflation above 30%. Such figures are still likely low. Both Shahab News and Aftab-e Yazd have noted the tendency of Iranian officials to pull numbers from thin air. 15. Iran mayl start exporting more unrest into the Region
Jonny ,   SA   (07.02.10)
The opposite might happen, that Iran will start exporting more unrest into the region.
16. Wishful thinking
Albrecht Klein ,   Germany   (07.02.10)
The people in North Korea are eating grass and leaves and Kim Yong-Il does not give a damn about it. Mahmoud Ahmaninejad and the mad Mullahs won't either.
17. Yeah, right
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (07.02.10)
This is war. The Iranians knew that the world's only superpower backed by their arch-enemy Saudi Arabia could hurt them. But considering the disparity of power, did the Americans realize how well the Iranians could manage thanks to the racist Obama's inexperience? Did did the US realize that Turkey, Lebanon and Syria would become Iranian allies? That Iran's domination of Iraq is now a matter of time? That the Anglo-American occupation forces in Afghanistan would incur heavy losses thanks to Iranian weapons?
18. Millions of Innocents Suffer from Zionism
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (07.02.10)
For the sake of a few million Jews many millions of innocent Arabs suffer.
19. Gerald @3 Please be more optimistic ha?
James ,   ISRAEL   (07.02.10)
I’ll take your 4th paragraph.i.e Sure some of the masses will suffer? Exactly that is what will make it easier for the Iranians to topple the Ayatollahs regime. Be optimistic rather than think Iran will not suffer. They will, irrespective of China or the lesser N.Korea. it will happen slowly but surely.
20. CantStandYa Turkey is next?
James ,   ISRAEL   (07.02.10)
Right on number 5!.Erdogan will most probably be next. All things considered by Obama's stance.. Well said, unlike some here who think the reverse.Your post was short and to the point!
21. To some here..Shall we be a bit more optimistic>>
James ,   ISRAEL   (07.02.10)
Whatever the journalist wrote truth in essense is this latest may help the Iranian public to rise up as never before,to rid themselves of the shackles imposed upon them by the very restricted mullah ridden desposts,be free once again. This latest could be A NAIL IN THE COFFIN OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC.Think about it people.
22. good news!
abraham ,   toronto   (07.02.10)
its only a matter of tiime. They will crumble like a houses of cards. soon the good persian people will be free and we can find Ahmadinijad in a hole - like Sadaam Hussein
23. Grow Up
lawrence ,   Philadelphia, USA   (07.02.10)
Don't you understand? This will be an excuse for war with the Little Satan (Israel) and the Great Satan (USA). The sanctions as pointed out by several other talkbacks are not enough to really hurt Iran but they will hurt just enough to be an excuse for war. China and russia have already indicated, indirectly, in many ways, that they will support iran as will several other countries. though I think it is unavoidable at this time I believe that Iran will start World War 3. I hope I'm wrong but the peices are in place and the slightest spark can set it off. And this is just what Iran wants to summon the madi. G-D help us all.
24. Guy you should have started this article with ....

25. To Steve@ 18 short reply. GO SUCK A LEMON!
James ,   ISRAEL   (07.02.10)
Bloody fool and with a name like Benassi! We do have some odd Jews don't we?????????????
26. To Jonny , @ SA ..Iran may start exporting more unrest??
James ,   ISRAEL   (07.02.10)
Gee whiz,I don't tink they would have any further capacity for more. They have/are doing enough. With their hands full as it is. I doubt they can exacerbate the situation in the region any further. Their DIE WAS CAST,but it will diminish sooner than later.
27. Sanctions will work...
James Rowntree ,   Vale, USA   (07.02.10)
but only if you are in Tehran trying to ccomplete your nuclear weapons program. Sanctions will not stop the Iranian nuclear nightmare. In fact, they will GUARANTEE that Iran gets the Bomb, because now that sanctions are in place, we must all wait and give them time to work. Just a matter of time...slowly but surely... The fools putting faith in sanctions don't see that TIME is the one thing we do not have. Time is not on our side. The sanctions will end as soon as Iran gets its Bomb. Then what? Diplomacy id Dead. Sanctions are Suicidal for us. Good luck to the IDF. Do what must be done.
28. SUDDENLY, we dont here the strong Iranian rhetoric recently!
Levente ,   Budapest   (07.02.10)
LOL))) Their cheap show, threats are finaly drawing a real picture.....they are liers! all they tried to do is to exploit the Iraq war, by thratening the "west" not to repeat "same mistake".....where is Saddam today, dear Ayatollas?
29. :: #18 You couldn't care less about the Billions suffering
Matty Groves ,   Fairport   (07.02.10)
from Jihad. Go read again your terrorism manual Quran and come back with more such "gems"
30. Though, N Korea was embargoed to the brink of
W. ,   Beirut, Lebanon   (07.02.10)
