When in the 1970s I was interested in a summer job with the US Post Office, I had to take a tough exam - only the top ranked got the jobs. (I did.) The same held some years later when I applied for a US civil service position. Only those with top scores and rankings (taking in veterans bonuses) were eligible. (I was.) None of this holds true in Israel apparently when an inspector has a party affiliation and works to advance the interests of that party. Heck, under the US Hatch Act I wasn't even *allowed* to be involved in a partisan campaign. Israel needs seriously to move to a professional, non-partisan civil service. And make clear they aren't permitted to strike, as Foreign Ministry personnel did recently, embarrassing Israel before its invited guests.

The basic subjects include math & English not Zionism. These are basic skills necessary to get a decent job. It is wonderfull when day begins with a prayer, moves on to Talmud, and ends with Ethics,but that´s impossible nowadays. civil servants should be non-participants in the political process. Incidentally, I can never forget that excellent English comedy series on television, "Yes, Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister" about the interaction between the "disinterested" civil servants and the politicians who utilize their skills. Israel will certainly need scientists, engineers, and doctors. As the Haredi are not interested, Israel would be better served spending its funds to educate its Arab students. The Haredi can get a job cleaning their toilets.

Education of our children should be to prepare them for independent adult life. I think most people agree about this. Haredim will be able to get on in life with no knowledge of English (or French, Arabic or Russian for example) but math, basic geography, good Hebrew grammar and writing skills are essential. Also, the Tnach they are taught is carefully selected bits only. This article ( which I wont label as Haredi-bashing), does point out the serious cheating of the State by pretence that Haredi children are getting a good basic education - and the school inspectors MUST be independent civil servants who have a duty to protect the interests of all Israeli school children, regardless of which sector they belong to.

I'm talking about you lot - not the subject of the article Every other day, we read articles saying how more and more hareidim are joining the army, working, have excellent skills etc - and you are all so thankful that finally there are less people learning Torah.
