1. and flip side of coin
Arie ,   BaGolan   (08.30.10)
How about the continued refusal for the Palestinians to recognize the State of Israel? That's ok? Oslo called for the IMMEDIATE recognition of Israel, yet to this day the Palestinians - Hamas and PA (same thing) still call for the State to be destroyed
2. Justice For Palestine or no peace for Israelis anywhere
Palestine   (08.30.10)
3. Abbas has limited options but can Israel meet them?
Bloodyscot ,   Dallas, Texas   (08.30.10)
The Quartet, Arab League and PA have reached an agreement but is Netanyahu willing to go that far? Ariel and E. Jerusalem will be hard to sell for either side and other war likely if Israel pushed to hard, in order to stop talks if needed.
4. ahaha ALREADY Israel's fault (4-5 days before!!)
(08.30.10)
The best joke! At least all the anti-israeli worldwide will rejoice and will be reassured to know that IT IS ISRAEL'S Fault now, yes now, even before talking. pfiouuuuuuuuu!
5. Oslo Agreement
Wasseem ,   Jordan   (08.30.10)
Oslo called for recognition of Israel & ending the occupation based on UNSCR 242, 338 and UNGAR 194 within 5 years !!!! Read the whole agreement, not only part of it which is for your side.
6. :: It makes no sense to start the talks
Matty Groves ,   Fairport   (08.30.10)
Arabs are already planning to disrupt them and blame Israel for it. Eat your heart out impersonator!
7. abbas complains
alexi   (08.30.10)
Abbas is a lawyer. Act like one. Stop crying before the negotiation, blamiing israel for this or that. Go in and negotiate. If you get a deal, fine. If not, don't cry about it and stop apportionning blame.
8. End the freeze now
Frank ,   Canada   (08.30.10)
Abbas is responsible for his own decisions. If he break the talks, he is the one who bares responsibility for this action.
9. Rabin vs. Netanjahu
(08.30.10)
The following is part of a speech given by the late Mr. Yitzhaq Rabin - the Prince of Peace, dubbed by many around the world - given before the Knesset, Israel's parliament, in October 1995, talking about the shape of a peace agreement as he envisioned it, and that was before the way Israel was attacked from the West Bank, 2000 and after the intensifications of attacks on Israel from Gaza, having left to territory in 2005... 1) Jerusalem will remain united under Israel's sovereignty and will also include suburbs such as Giv'at Zeev and Ma'aleh Adumim. 2) The major Jewish settlement blocs will be part of the sovereign state of Israel. 3) The Jordan Valley must be viewed in the widest possible way of its definition and it too will remain under Israel rule. 4) The future Palestinian state will be demilitarized and its border passes and skies will remain under Israel's control. This contour is more strict than Mr. Netanjahu is likely to propose, and Rabin was a leader of the left of center Labor party. Furthermore, the overwhelming majority of Israel citizens, right, left and center, would agree with Rabin's AND Netanjahu's views of the shape of a future Muslim-Arab state in the regions of Samaria and Judeah. So, when we think of the details of an accommodation of peaceful coexistence between Arab and Jew, between the Muslim-Arab world and the nation-state of the Jewish people, Israel, let us do so with open eyes, ears, mind and heart, shall we...??
10. Wasseem #5 learn to read the UN Charter
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (08.30.10)
It says that UNGARs are RECOMMENDATIONS. They are not legal in any shape or form. I have read the two UNSCRs and guess what they don't say a single thing about 'Palestinians'. The occupation you speak of is by the Arabs of our lands. The Arabs have no legal claim to any land west of the Jordan. We are not stopping any Arab state from talking to us. Look how many years it took you. And then you violate the agreements you signed.
11. free pals from'occupation'
moron ,   galut   (08.30.10)
jordan is 'occupying' "palestone" too-judea and samaria are in fact administered territories-unallocated portion of mandatory palestine-and if this are is jewish as first contemplated by mandate-never mind g-d's plans-then arabs are occupiers and may be freed by expulsion which is more humane than what they plan for the jews
12. "Continued holding of Shalit ruins talks"...
BJL ,   usa   (08.30.10)
How about that for a headline? Or" Legal status for Israel....already recognized at 1920 San Remo conference"! "Judea and Samaria already legally Israel"!
13. Abbas has no legitimacy
zooog ,   US   (08.30.10)
If they dared to have an election in the west bank, Hamas would probably win just as they did in Gaza. Abbas can't deliver on anything.
14. Elephant in the Room
Dallas ,   Canada   (08.30.10)
When has the PA lifted a finger, made any tentative step to facilitate the process? Of course, to continue this charade is Abbas' only option, since it's obvious that for any PA leader to genuinely attempt to make true peace with Israel would mean his end. And the world is terrified to acknowledge this elephant in the room.
15. #2 Palestinian Justice
Dallas ,   Canada   (08.30.10)
We all know what that means. Any land formerly conquered by Islam brings Allah's condemnation unless returned to Islam. So we know what you mean by justice... monolithic Islamic rule and the destruction of Israel, nothing less. Tough position Allah puts you in...
16. #5: That's correct Wasseem
Israeli 2   (08.30.10)
it called for the recognition of Israel like Egypt and Jordan have done. The Palestinians however do not and are unwilling to recognize Israel until they get all of Israel. This is obviously not the way to go. Don't you think? P.S. Jerusalem was, is and will be always the undivided capitol city of Israel and thus we are called Zionists...isn't that great?
17. The two "leaders"....
Shalom U.S.A. ,   U.S.A.   (08.30.10)
The difference between the two is that Netanyahu doesn't have the courage to spell out his intentions, Abbas, on the other hand demanding, Jerusalem, the right of return of millions of terrorists, Judea and Samaria, in short a national suicide. Be ready for another typical Netanyahu move, backstabbing his own people. He's a coward!
18. KEEP IT UP ,ABBAS...
OZ   (08.30.10)
with your lies, half truthes and twisted history.... you never ever had been"a nation", never had a state of your own. heck, you cound'nt even govern gaza for all we know......
19. What occupation Abbas?
Brod ,   USA   (08.30.10)
Judea and Samaria are Israel's historic homeland-Land of Israel since ancient time which Israel liberated from the Islamist-Jihadist occupiers in the 20th century, as Spain did in liberating its historic homeland from the Islamist-Jihadist occupiers in the Medieval. It is time the world rejects the 'occupation' crap of the Islamist-Jihadists. For too long the world has been imbibing the cesspool of Islamist-Jihadist Taqiyya (Deceit) calling the Land of Israel as their land. The Land of Israel belongs to the Jews since 4000 years ago from the time of their forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel). It is GOD-GIVEN and GOD-RESTORED to Israel as a Fulfillment of GOD'S Covenant to Israel. Jeremiah 31:1-17, Ezekiel 36:24-38, Ezekiel 37:21-28, Ezekiel 39:27-29, Amos 9:14-15. The problem is that Islamist-Jihadists everywhere are trying to subdue (by Trojan Horse, Mosque Building, terrorism, wars and Taqiyya), dominate and occupy other countries as commanded by their god Lucifer to turn Dar Al Harb (non-Islamist countries) into Dar Al Islam (the House of Islam or Islamist-Jihadist countries). Adherents of Islamist-Jihadism or Islam are violent occupiers of other countries since they sprouted like Locusts from the Bottomless Pit of the Arabian Desert in the 7th century. Israel should say NO to these dark forces and defend its homeland their usurpation and occupation.
20. This is a joke that is already about to explode
Eyal ,   USA   (08.30.10)
The Palestinians want a 1 state solution, they don't want to recognize Israel as a Jewish State, they want everything without negotiating and they will never convince Hamas. What a waste of time. You have nothing better to do with your time Netanyahu?
21. HEY ABBAS! WHY SHOULD WE WANT TO TALK TO YOU???
stude ham   (08.30.10)
WHEN YOU CAN'T EVEN TALK TO HAMAS? and besides... what have you got to give the jewish people?
22. Lose-Lose for Bibi
blash ,   Jerusalem   (08.30.10)
If he renews settlement construction, talks fail and blame is placed on Israel. If he doesn't renew settlement construction, the coalition breaks down and Bibi is replaced, causing talks to fail as its key Israeli representatives are replaced. These talks are as absurd as the theater boycott. How can Israel have peace talks with the Palestinians when Abbas insinuates day after day that Israel has no right to exist?!
23. The Abbas/PA/hamas commentary
Arie ,   BaGolan   (08.30.10)
appears to have been written by Levy and the Haaretz editorial board
24. It will be Abbasses fault
sean ,   jerusalem   (08.30.10)
For being stubborn. There's nothing to stop him from negotiation while building is going on. Besides, if they want independence, let them go find it in Jordan.
25. #17. The two "leaders"....
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & New York   (08.30.10)
Real difference is that Abbas does not represent anyone, and Hamas has already publicly said that what ever he does is not acceptable. While Bibi has (just) enough support to make peace and make a good deal. These talks are a waste of time and Bibi knows it, he is trying to help Obama from loosing all support while knowing that nothing can happen until the Palestinians reconcile and hold another election.
26. P.S. to my post # 9: Rabin and Netanjahu's approach is based
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (08.30.10)
on UN Security Council Resolution 242, the single one resolution that has been the basis of peace-making between Arab and Jew, the Muslim-Arab world and the nation-state of the Jewish people, including the forthcoming talks. 242, note, passed unanimously at the UN Security Council, was accepted by all relevant parties to the conflict, it has been the basis of ALL talks to date and the basis for the actual peace treaties between Israel and Egypt and Israel and Jordan. It is time to accept Rabin AND Netanjahu's pragmatic and realistic approach to the achievement of an accommodation of peaceful coexistence between Arab and Jew, between the Muslim-Arab world and the nation-state of the Jewish people, Israel.
27. "Israel will bear sole and full responsibility" ...
michael redbourn ,   Arad - Israel   (08.30.10)
Abbas doesn't want and can't deliver peace. "Israel will bear sole and full responsibility"; do statements get more telling? The PA has refused to accept over 90% of the WB Demands East Jerusalem when it's not even mentioned in the Koran. Won't allow Jews to live in the WB Talks of several million Muslims returning to Israel proper. Does the above sound like it's a basis for peace talks? Michael
28. wasted time
tiki ,   belgium   (08.30.10)
This whole thing is NOT about PEACE/BOARDERS/SETTLEMENTS or who get's what. It's about OBAMA and the DEMOCRATES and the November elections. Nothing will come out of it as we all know!
29. Pals:No Peace from the get go- Everytime
EZ ,   USA   (08.30.10)
These will for sure be the last "peace talks" Israel will have to humiliate themselves through with the Pals forever. And the Pals already started the blame game and their antics of shirking responsibility. After all, it's a win win for them. When the talks fail, Israel builds (simply annexing) and the Pals are slowly absorbed into Israel, they'll see a better life anyhow. We're all sick and tired of their waffling and lying, we're beyond resigned, we, the sane, have finally realized there will never be a peaceful two state solution. When these talks fail, only the headache of Gaza will remain with the remaining Pal terrorist groups becoming obsolete and marginalized by the world. Gaza will more than likely remain a Paly enclave filled with hateful people who live on the dole until they move out to other countries to get the life Israel handed them with the 2005 withdrawl...which they blew. In the end, Jordan, Lebanon &Syria will be their 'home' as it always should have been. Border skirmishes will continue, die out and the Pals will have a 'holiday' of remembrence about the 'homeland' they lost. And history will ferment without pity for them but rather, disappointment or loathing at them for lost oppostunities and seeing who they really were and what they really wanted...which was the destruction of Israel. The Europeans didn't want the Jews, we got a sliver of our homeland back, got attacked incessantly by terrorist neighbors with no sensitivity to our plight, calling for our annihilation, the world media (European) still abused us from afar and we stood our ground. We are the worlds scapegoat...or, more accurately, WERE the worlds scapegoat. But no longer. Long live the Jewish people and Israel, shame on our senseless and hateful enemies and may Israel soon see only peace without the problem 'people' who've sought our destruction for ten decades. Time for us to reap the benefits of holding fast to our rights, security and self determination. May the enemy crumble fast and hard...as soon as possible.
30. Hey Abu Mazen,What are you talking about?!!
Salma ,   Palestine   (08.30.10)
Construction of new settlements and expansion of existing settlements were already increasing at the time the Oslo process began in 1993. The settler population was growing by about 10 percent a year, divide the territories into separate cantons surrounded by "Israeli" troops! Mr. President, You must admit that the option of peace has failed :(
