1. This oath constitutes a depatrizing act for USA Jews!
(10.18.10)
Yep! Any American Jew who swears this oath is libel to IMMEDIATELY lose his/her USA citizenship. Now what Mr. Netanyahu?!
2. To: No. 1 I will never lose my USA Citizenship - never
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.18.10)
3. Not only Jewish olim, but all Israelis should take oath
Avi ,   Geneva   (10.18.10)
All leftists especially must be put before their responsibility as citizens towards the state of Israel and swear allegiance to it. Likewise "Israeli Arabs" so-called. Those refuse to swear loyalty should lose their citizenship.
4. :: Oh dear...
Matty Groves ,   Fairport   (10.18.10)
...back-pedalling so soon?! ☺
5. #1: whatcha smokin?
david ,   new york   (10.18.10)
there is no US law preventing US jews from swearing allegiance to a jewish democratic state. at present, there are many tens of thousands of dual israeli-american citizens who swore allegiance to israel (such things exist with other countries and the US also) also, its L-I-A-B-L-E, not L-I-B-E-L ("libel" is what you are perpetrating against israel, "liable" is what you meant to say. in either case, you are wrong)
6. Nothing in law that would result in loss of US citizenship
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, USA   (10.18.10)
#1 is just fear-mongering.
7. nu?

what's good for the goose is good for the gander, eh? glad israel chose to uphold its democratic values by treating the minority the same as the majority. kol hakavod for the jewish state on this!
8. good and to #1
David ,   Haifa, Israel   (10.18.10)
as a zionist... i will take the oath. as an israeli i will take the oath. as an oleh from the USA... i will take the oath... i am very proud to be an Israeli
9. It's a sound change. In this way, should
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (10.18.10)
we get another wave of (questionable) Jewish immigrants as we got when we took in so many Russians, we are more assured of who we are getting and possible recriminations if such immigrants do not live up to their commitments. As to the international community, these leftist ashamed-of-themselves Jews should stop pandering to that mob and stop trying to explain themselves. This has been the trouble for ages. We are Jews; we ough said.
10. To: All
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.18.10)
The post at No. 2 is not mine.
11. #5 let me explain...
#1   (10.19.10)
at the moment USA law allows for the bestowal of Israeli citizenship upon Jews. However the moment that Israeli citizenship requires an oath then it is no longer bestowed and it falls outside of the range of USA law and becomes a depatrizing act. I am a dual national and I would really love to know what you are smoking...because I never swore alligance to Israel, I just went in declared I was Jewish and lo! under the law of return the State of Israel bestowed citizenship on me. BESTOWED and that was that! Thank you for the grammar correction there you are correct. With respect to the rest...go get yourself educated because you don't know diddly about the issue!
12. YES!
Jennie ,   Us/Israel   (10.19.10)
Couldn't be more proud to be an Israeli Citizen ! Col Hacavod, Bibi !

I hold passports from the UK, Israel, and The USA in that order. Oy gevalt. I'm proud to be a Scottish, Israeli, American Jew. I'm even prouder to be a Mensch (according to my Maw,Ima, Mom.
15. TBers NB #1 is 100% correct here's the US law
Sally Forth ,   Jerusalem of course!   (10.19.10)
From the current USA Immigration and Nationality Act SubSection 349 Loss of citizenship by expatriating action: "taking an oath or making an affirmation or other formal declaration of allegiance to a foreign state or a political subdivision thereof after having attained the age of eighteen years" P.M. Mr. Netanyahu's proposed amendment clearly calls for advocating that ALL Jews seeking Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return guidelines swear/affirm a loyalty oath therefore he's basically asking all FUTURE USA Olim to commit an expatriating action which will cause them to lose their USA citizenship. Therefore with a special call of attention to #5 and #6, #1 is 100% correct and you my friends are 100% wrong! and that's all I have to say about that!
16. #11 Wrong (stop the FUD)
CIS_1753   (10.19.10)
As an example, UK naturalisation requires an oath of "true allegiance” to the Queen. The US has many dual US/UK nationals many of whom are born in the US and naturalised in the UK.
17. #11 let me explain... you are wrong
zionist ,   miami   (10.19.10)
The presumption is that one intends to keep his or her US citizenship. You only lose your citizenship if you perform an expatriating act with the intent of relinquishing citizenship. see here: http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_778.html
18. # 1 is wrong 2ce, but ..
# me True ,   usa   (10.19.10)
go ahead, keep continuing to make a complete fool of yourself. DUH
19. Loyalty Oath
Gary Dalin ,   US   (10.19.10)
Objectors to the adjective 'Jewish' in the oath see it as 'racist'. For years the UN held that Zionism is racism. Though rescinded finally, there yet remains a significant and loud even Jewish minority who join many in the world who maintain the the word 'Jewish' implies racism. Who cares if this is the opposite of Zionist and Jewish values. Israel is named after Jacob, grandson of Abraham through whom the Jewish Jewish nation emerged. Any Muslim prospective citizen who does not like the term 'Jewish State' has an option: to join any of the 57 Muslim non-democratic countries. You know, the ones that ethnically cleansed themselves of their Jews. In any case: why in the world would any Arab even want to move to Israel to live under Israeli rule in the first place? ... unless, they hope to infiltrate Israel like Europe and eventually rule with Sharia.... that makes sense.... which is reason enough for the loyalty oath!
20. depatrizing????

Must be that medical marijuana......
21. The P.M. is a wet noodle!
safta of 12 ,   Israel   (10.19.10)
22. It is correct that we American olim can lose our
Rachel ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (10.19.10)
US citizenship over Bibi's proposed amendment. The US has always allowed dual citizenship as long as no loyalty oath by a second country is required. Evidently, no one at the Justice MInistry told this to Bibi or that moron Lieberman in advance of its proposal. I am sure Lieberman thinks Israel should just be for Russian olim who owe no loyalty to Russia, but that leaves the other several million of us here out of the loop and now we have to contend with either leaving or swearing to an odious oath and losing our own history--sort of like the Nuremberg laws in reverse.
23. DEMOCRATIC SECURITY STATE
NOKEAM DAAM YISROEL   (10.19.10)
THE OATH SHOULD BE TO GUARANTEE THE SECURITY OF ALL PEOPLES IN ISRAEL .AND TO RECOGNIZE ISRAEL AS THE JEWISH HOMELAND .
24. #1 you need to check the facts - no conflect
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & New York   (10.19.10)
In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship. Pledging to Israel does not fit the requirements. For a good summary look at US Department of State site: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1753.html
25. #1; misled or misleading?
David ,   Flroida   (10.19.10)
It irritates me when people run their mouths and don't check their facts before hand. I checked the above mentioned web site and it says one has to make the intention of giving up US citizenship before any of the conditions would cause one to lose their US citizenship. This Jew would be willing to say, and mean, this pledge or one based on the American pledge. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the State of Israel and to the republic for which it stands one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Just wondering; how many Arabs would pledge allegiance to the Magen David?
26. amusing how all the right wing USA TBers...
immigration lawyer ,   USA & Israel   (10.19.10)
feel they can apply US law selectively for them it might do well to go and review the case titled Kahane vs. USA State Department. M.K. Rabbi Kahane, z"l, took his case all the way to the USA Supreme Court his claim was that he could swear an oath of allegiance to Israel (when he became a Member of Knesset) and that he could still retain his American citizenship. Friends he lost and was forced to give up his USA citizenship. This was unlike P.M. Golda Meir, z"l and former MK, Ambassador, Minister of Defense, & Foreign Minister, Moshe Arens, may he live a long & healthy life, both of whom surrendered their USA citizenship upon swearing loyalty to Israel when they became MKs. In other words these TBs are either wishful thinker at best or plain old uninformed individuals at worst!
27. #25 nice but that's not what is being proposed...
(10.19.10)
by the government of the State of Israel! and just FYI Israel is not a republic! Your TB shouws that you need to check your facts before hand! have a nice day
28. #26 cases are not similar
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & New York   (10.19.10)
As a lawyer you must know that the devil is in the details. Swearing allegiance to a state and swearing in as part of its government are not the same thing. If they were Congress would not need to swear to defend to US Constitution above and beyond their normal pledging allegiance - as they did since childhood. The key factor (as per US State Department site) is intent. Swearing allegiance to Israel does not conflict with pledging allegiance for citizenship to the USA
29. Bibi....Iyiyiyiy
rachel ,   chutz4 now home soon   (10.19.10)
NO! For goodness sake! Every OTHER country requires "new immigrants" to affirm" to some loyalty! Sheeeeesh! Do NOT buckle!
30. gotta love (PM/Mr) Netanyahu!
(10.19.10)
he's figured out he's gone up a tree and now he's looking for ladders to get down! He's counting on the American Olim's lawyers and the lawyers from programs such as Nefesh B'Nefesh to get him out of the FM Mr. Lieberman tree he's climbed into! Here's hoping it will work!
