Vey few of the Mizrahi were expelled. They left Egypt and elsewhere because they were made unpopular by association with Israel, which state was actively campaigning to persuade them to make aliya. They were not refugees. The Palestinians who left in 1948 were trying to escape from a war zone, They have the internationally recognised right of return. The Israelis made them refugees when they refused to let them go back to their homes, thus breaking a promise Ben Gurion made to the UN when Israel was allowed in. This right of return is a personal right which cannot be negotiated away by Abbas or anyone else.
35. jewish refugees from the arab lands
yeshua kashani ,   oxnard, usa   (11.11.10)
i am a jewish refugee from a non arab islamic land. pease also sign up people like me. many of us have lost everything.
36. son of palestin, #9
yeshua kashani ,   oxnord, usa   (11.11.10)
all sons of palestine should understand that the right of jews to return to their so called arb and islamic ancestral lands means that they will be allowed full rights of citissenship and will be allowed to live anywher frely. it inclus yathreb.
37. Mizrahi Jews no longer refugees--for one reason
Mikey ,   SomeWhere OverHere   (11.11.10)
They are almost all now at home and succesfully integrated and absorbed in their country, Israel and live among their fellow Jews. They don't want to be repatriated into Arab countries like Iraq or Yemen where they will be minorities amongst strangers again.
38. To Steve Benassi #16
Mikey ,   SomeWhere OverHere   (11.11.10)
Just for your historical edification, not only were Jews expelled and dispossessed from many Arab lAnds, but Jews were also expelled in 1948 from areas of British mandatory Palestine that fell to Jordanian control. Some of my relatives lived in Jerusalem's Jewish Quarter in 1948--they were legal residents of the British Mandate of Palestine, thus they were technically "Palestinians". They then became "Palestinian refugees"--except they were Jews expelled by Arabs (Palestinain Arabs). Fortunately, these Jewish Palestinian refugees didn't stay refugees for long, they were absorbed and given a home in Israel and not kept in refugee camps and encouraged to retain a sense of being a refugee. That is what Israel did for their fellow Jews and what Arab societies failed to do for their fellow Arabs. The "Palestinian" refugees are unique in this regard...Hungarians who fled Czechoslovakia postWW2 have become integrated into Hungary, Muslims who fled India following partition have become Pakistani, etc....why are the so-called "Palestinian" Arabs different? They have a home--in Arab lands, with their people--not in our land.
39. As bad as being a ...
eddi ,   thailand   (11.11.10)
Palestinians have never attacked anyone - Blame Germans for your mass murder , why do you jews always bring the holocaust on table -do you know how many south africans died ?
40. Refugees don't have citizenship of any land
lydia ,   Brisbane   (11.11.10)
Why should Palestinians be responsible for Jewish refugees from Arab country. They are already bearing the brunt of Hitlers Jews and other Jewish migrants from East Europe. Ayalon might have been a refugee but once he took Israeli citizenship he i no longer a refugee.
41. Israel's leverage: no PA state unless ALL refugees are equal
Dr. L. Brnd ,   San Diego, USA   (11.11.10)
Abbas doesn't have to agree to anything. There isn't going to be any of this idiotic "Arab right of return" to what is now israel, they go to PA state or stay where they are. Zero are going to Israel, PERIOD. The US (even the Obama regime) is crystal clear on this, and what the UN or EU think doesn't matter. As for a "just settlement of the refugee problem" as part of an overall peace agreement, Israel can and must insist that there will be no Israeli withdrawal to create a PA state unless "solving the refugee problem" includes exactly equivalent property compensation treatment for Jewish refugees from the Arab world as an equal part of this. No matter who pays into the fund. The US Congress has already dictated to the Obama White House that any peace deal on Mideast refugees must include this - so demanding this is hardly creating a further "obstacle", as the article foolishly tried to imply.
42. to #13 Adeni refugee and all Zionists/
Arabi ibn Arabi ,   the Free world   (11.11.10)
don’t call yourself a refugee if you don’t want to go back from where you came from or “kicked out.” Palestinians wants to return to their homeland. the whole refugee issues between Jews of Arab lands (Mizrahi) and Palestinian Arabs started with the founding of the so called Zionists “state.” so the Zionists started this issue not the Arabs. for Mizrahi so called refugee, there must be 2 options for them. either they return or get paid for your lost if they have prove, but you must leave Palestine because it is not your land. why should the Palestinian pay for what Zionists (European so called Jews) did. every one should go back to where he or she comes from.
43. #16 Steve - Borrow a Book on the History
Dallas ,   Canada   (11.11.10)
Start with Martin Gilbert's "A History of Israel". Of course it is quite thick and factual, but it does take quite a bit of real effort to learn the real dynamics of the region. About time one of the Israeli leaders brings up this very important issue, which in one step makes the Arabs' "claim of return" a complete non-starter.
44. Excuse me, but I am confused
Israeli 2   (11.11.10)
What is this all about? Mizrahi Jews and ashkenazi Jews are all Jews! If monetary compensation is given, it should be given evenly to all Jews. If the compensation is to specific families, then Jews will feel divided and different. We all suffered equally. The pain is felt by us all. Hitler or Ahminijad would care less if our names were Waksberg or Yosef.
45. Nonsense, Israel settled with Egypt & Jordan
Legal Eagle ,   USA   (11.11.10)
Why should the Palestinians recognize Jewish refugees? Israel has signed final settlements with the responsible parties without addressing the issue. Declassified documents prove that Israel has shamelessly used the assets of Jewish refugees living in other countries as a bargaining chip to offset its own liabilities. It could care less about reparations.
46. refuges
boris ,   nyc, us   (11.11.10)
the problem is almost resolved: all jews are at home; now all arabs from israel, gaza, judea and samaria should be send home, to the countries where jews were expelled.
47. #9 And how are you barbarians gonna guarantee their safety?

50. # 42
Linda ,   Poltava, Ukraine   (11.11.10)
You collection of ideas is absolutely brilliant, but must be brought to the logical end. The fact is that the whole humanity had originated from a single group of people (a few thousand) from Africa. So you if you are to be consistent and honest, you should show an example and relocate yourself to one of the African countries, say, Somalia, Niger, Congo, Zimbabwe (similarly advanced countries on that continent are abundant). They badly need knowledgeable and well-educated people.
51. Is there or is there not an Arab Nation?
Bat Zion ,   Centre, Israel   (11.11.10)
Is there or is there not an Arab Nation? Are the Saudis kin with the Yemenis? Are the Iraqis kin with the Kuwaitis? Are the Syrians kin with the Lebanese? Are the Palestinians kin with the Jordanians? Do they guaranty for one another?

observer   (11.11.10)
have the Mizrahi refugees been recognized by Israel? Arab Jews (Mizrahim) were seduced or forced by Zionists to leave their homes, while the Palestinians were expelled by the same Zionists. The Mizrahim who arrived in Israel ended up in agricultural work, 10-12 hours a day in conditions of disease and squalor. Their high death rate was explained by one Zionist official as a “common and natural thing”. Today Mizrahim constitute around 50% of the Israeli population. Palestinian Arabs make up another 20%, so the total non-European population is about 70%. Mizrahim were spatially marginalized by the Israeli settlement project, whether in the isolated periphery or in poor and stigmatized neighborhoods of Israel’s major cities.
54. To 45
Carl   (11.11.10)
Israel did settle with Egypt. There were no Jews in Jordan. However hundreds of thousands of Jews were expelled from other Arab countries. Not during a civil war as in Israel/Palestine 1948, simply ethnically cleansed.
55. To 53# Was it the Zionists who....?
Jake ,   London   (11.11.10)
Took away sitizenship from Algerian Jews overnight. Was it the Zionists who confiscated property and bank accounts from Egyptian Jews? Was it the Zionists who went on a genocidal rampage through major cities in Iraq murdering Jews? Was it the Zionists who were able to convince, seduce or force 99.9% of all Jews from Arab lands to leave? Compare these figures with the Arab refugees, which has grown whereas the Jewish population has been decimated. Sounds like ethnic cleansing to me
56. Arabi ibn Arabi no 42
Adeni Refugee   (11.11.10)
Are your crazy or under heavy drugs? Jews to go back to their home in Arab countries? If you givce me a house made of gold,I will not be prepared to go back to Aden and I will tell you why? The main reason I will not be safe in Aden,I will be treated like sh=t,and I will always be in fear.I remember very well when there was demonstration againt the British for independence, the local Arabs, use to turn things to the Jews, buring Jewish cars, shops, houses, breaking water pipes, and G d forbid if there was a Jew walking in the street, for sure the arabs will kill him. What it have to do with the local Jews? After the Jews left aden, and Aden became independence, the Government have demolished the JEWISH CEMETRY in Maala to make the road wider. There was a very beautiful Synagogue in Street no 3 called MIHLAMA ALKABIRA been demolished, and many small synagogue have been burnt to the ground.NO way I and my family will ever return to Aden.

There is no such place called Palestine?
58. Son of Palestine no 9
JUDAH THE LION   (11.11.10)
Firstly there is no such place called Palestine. The Roman empire have changed the name to hurt the Jews. Read your quran and your quran is our witness which are written YA BNEI ISRAIL.BNEI ISRAIL WERE YAHUD (JEWS) and for a million percent. Unless you dont believe in your quran, then I will call you KAFER
59. Danny Ayalon and Yisrael Beiteinu bring
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (11.11.10)
a fresh perspective into the current discussions with our Arab neighbours and a much needed one as well. Since the demise of Olmert and Tzipi into non-players and second stringers respectively, our government has become increasingly aggressive as opposed to cowtowing and appeasing every European and American country. Just reading Mr. Ayalon's proposal gives me new confidence in our nation.
60. We welcome ther mizrahi back in Lebanon
JUDAH THE LION   (11.11.10)
If you really lovethe mizrahi Jews, why on earth you have started trouble with them.I am sure if you have treated the Jews in good manner, the Lebanese Jews would not left Lebanon.Any mizrahi Jew whio return to the Arab lands, must be mad.
