31. Forget about peace
Richard ,   New York, USA   (11.19.10)
Although I agree with your suggestion, the assumption that the world will ignore the Palestinians as soon as they have a state is wrong. As long as a Jewish State exists , the world will continue to demonize it. If all the Jews in Israel move to Antarctica there would be a sudden European wide reawakening of interest in the inalienable rights of penguins and their oppression by the Jews.
32. YNET wasting their money on nonesense!
Eric ,   Toronto, Canada   (11.19.10)
Why is YNET hiring this man to write such an idiotic piece of garbage is beyond comprehension! Isn't it obvious to any objective mind that a new state in the West Bank will soon become a terrorist state like Gazza? How many times Israel has to pay for horrible mistakes?
33. Flaw in the argument
Brod ,   USA   (11.19.10)
Faulting the Right more seems to be a flaw of the writer's argument. The writer is putting too much weight on America. His rusty warehouse spare part argument is false. The fact is Israel has existed since 4000 years ago long before there was America or Islam. Contrary to his argument, the world needs Israel more than the other way round. Most of the high tech products in the world were invented by Jews. The top scientists in America, Europe and Russia are Jews. The fact is the world cannot function well without Jewish brains. What is obvious is that there is no need for peace in a region where Israel's enemies hate peace. The 'peace' of the Islamist-Jihadists is the destruction of Israel which they proudly announce to the world through their Charter, School Textbooks and Maps. So, why waste time talking peace with the wolves and tigers of the region that do NOT know peace and are NOT nation builders?
34. Lapid's analysis is correct
Rob ,   Paris France   (11.19.10)
While it may be comforting to read each others self-reinforcing comments, all those who disagree with Lapid would do well to listen to his arguments (Kadima was the largest vote-getter this last time, so one guesses Kadima voters don't read Ynet - they sure aren't commenting here). Israelis have become increasingly deaf and tone-deaf when dealing with the U.S. and the rest of the world. There's plenty of disgusting, visceral hatred of Israel. That's not the point. But don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Israel needs friends. There are plenty out there who are turned off by what is seen as a short-sighted, provincial, navel-gazing, opportunistic, even corrupt political class that seems to be incapable of producing a visionary leadership who will lead the country on a risky path away from near-pariah state status. The religious right may be necessary to form the umpteenth mediocre coalition, but let's be clear: FoxNews will not be enough to support Israel when the chips are down. The U.S. may eventually impose a real two-state solution because the voices in the States that are fed up with the "hopeless situation in the Middle East" are gaining ground fast. How almost all the geniuses in the polItical class, especially Netanyahu, are missing this crystal-clear development, is hard to understand. It is in Israelis' interest to change the paradigm now.
35. Hey Marc, you need to stay for a while in
Robert Haymond ,   Israel/Canada   (11.19.10)
some of the Westbank Arab villages and witness not only how the UN supports the Arab people but how Arabs pay no taxes and, at the same time, work, oftentimes on Israeli construction projects or on Israeli production units. Your sentiments about the "poor" Arabs and socalled violations of their farming (olive trees) is also more dribble from a foreigner who refuses to investigate and note how much of this propaganda is set up and perpetuated by these "abject" Palestinians themselves. Instead of cloyingly articulating leftwing propaganda and moralizing to your heart's content, why don't you actually investigate the situation, as we say, on the ground?
36. US will never impose a Pal state on Israel
Claudia ,   Tampa USA   (11.20.10)
Israel is a sovereign nation and it is not up to us to impose anything. Obama will threaten and Congress will shut him down. They know America supports the Jewish state and we know that that bastard president hates us Americans as much as he hates Israel. Because of that he grows weaker and more dangerous by the day. Concessions by Israel have not succeeded in peace and never will, certainly the idiotic Gaza pullout should show not just Israel but the world that the Muslims never intend there to be peace. Israel was respected when you stayed true to G-d's gift, and to yourselves, that Israel belongs to the Jewish people. Do not forget that. Lapid is just another brain dead liberal that is generally wrong about everything and everyone yet tries to distance himself from that, until his conclusion is the same old pipe dream. Concessions do not work for Israel!
37. #10 therein lies the problem
Dan ,   Canada   (11.20.10)
"2/3 are not religious". Being the Lord's chosen people, you have an essential duty to obey Him and follow Him, more than any other people. So when you turn away the punishments are more severe. How many prophets, well, all of them, and how many punishments before you get it. 40 years in the desert for an eleven day journey, captivity into babylon, destruction by the romans, the Holacaust, etc, etc,etc...and soon Gog into the land of unwalled villages, where a remnant of you will again remain. Trust in the Lord, and He will fight your battles.
38. #34 Rob. America can't and won't divide Israel.
Chaim ,   Israel   (11.20.10)
#34 Rob. Those "voices" in the U.S., which want to inflict the evil Two State Final Solution on Israel, are the voices of the Obama regime. Americans recently passed judgement on this horrid regime. The result was the biggest midterm shellacking since 1948. Israel is infinitely more popular among Americans than Obama. Nobody can divide Israel and America is, in it's vast majority, far friendlier to Israel than the current U.S. regime.
39. Yair ignores the reason the Arabs want a Palestinian state
Jay3 ,   Israel   (11.20.10)
Their Charter makes it very clear. They want Israel destroyed, and fools like him and the left support the Arabs cause! Why cant any politicians say the truth. There is no such thing as a distinct Palestinian people. Palestine is nothing more than a name for a geographical area. Next the Arabs will want their own states called Europe or Asia!
40. Most Americans support Israel, even in War
DANNY ,   America   (11.20.10)
The only ones who don't are teens who know nothing or college fools. I went to college and couldn't believe what passes as fact. Most people here support and believe in Israel's right to this land called "whatever". Just because we don't always vote we do think and pray and will not let our leaders betray Israel. If we do it's the END OF THE WORLD and hang on to your butts!
41. The most important factor is missing from the analysis
Seppo ,   Finland   (11.20.10)
Hashem controls the future of Israel, not American help or anybody else's help. He has given to man a free will and therefore He lets people fool around doing all kinds of mistakes and errors. If Israeli government makes wrong decisions they are guilty of results. First description of today's events are in Deuteronomy 30. Wars are coming at the time Hashem allows. He will also take care that Israel will be invincible. He said very clearly of this time "...bring thee into the land which thy farthers possessed, and thou shalt possess it". The problem is that Israel does not want to possess the land, they just want to GIVE it away. Hashem has organized international law for possession. According to decisions made by the League of Nations in 1922, confirmed by the US in 1924 and UN in their Chapter, the Jews have right to build and live anywhere west of the river Jordan. DO IT. Israeli government and western world seem to think that Jordan occupation 1948-1968 changed the land to be Arab land. That is plain Arab propaganda which everybody believes. When a lie is repeated enough many times it becomes "truth"
42. Oil money is problem
Alex ,   UK   (11.20.10)
Good analysis, but too defeatist on "impossible to win" clause. Israel needs to hold until oil replacement technology is found (and that is inevitable). Because this oil is a fuel of the conflict. Arab and Iranian oil money buy both arms for terrorists, and media support. They also propel Islamic immigration and eventual takeover of the West. By blackmailing by street violence and political assasinations, and by bribing, Arabs/Islamists force the West to pay multi-million ransoms to PA/Hamas. Look what happened in Shri Lanka, in 2 years who now remembers Vellupilai Prabhakaran and bloody tigers. They just didn't have oil money behind their backs.
43. Cease blaming ourselves and open your eyes to...
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (11.20.10)
It never ceases to amaze one of the blind spot some, seemingly intelligent people, have to a certain aspect of reality: Consistent Muslim-Arab rejectionism since 1917 of an accommodation of peaceful coexistence between Arab and Jew, and later between the Muslim-Arab world - not the Christin-Arab world, not the Druze-Arab world - and the nation-stare of the Jewish people, Israel. 1917 - Balfour Declaration, rejected 1920 - San Remo Conference, rejected 1922 - League of Nations decisions, rejected 1937 - Peel Commission proposal, rejected 1947 - United Nations partition, rejected 1948 - Israel's peace offer, rejected 1948 to 1967 - Instead of setting up an independent state in the entire territory now demanded by the Arabs and proclaiming eastern Jerusalem its capital city, all "cleansed" of the former Jewish residents and totally ruled by Muslim-Arab, the Muslim-Arab, instead, set up the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1964, three full years before Israel captured the now disputed territories in the Six-Day War. Which part of "Palestine" was this organization to "liberate"...?? 1967 - Israel's peace offer, rejected 1978 - Begin/Saadat offer, rejected 2000 - Barak/Clinton offer, rejected 2008 - Olmert/Bush offer, rejected 2009/10 - Netanjahu's offer for direct talks, rejected There is a single common denominator to all of these rejections: The refusal to accept the RIGHT of an independent Jewish political entity, state, to exist on any parcel of land between the River and the Sea. Thus, instead of attempting to find shortcomings with the Jews, their leaders and the nation-state of the Jewish people, it is very high time people looked carefully at the pattern of rejections by the Muslim-Arab world and its underlying cause and demanded of the Muslim-Arabs, now into the 21st century, to simply accept Israel's RIGHT to be, to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people, since without such an acceptance no peace will ever come to this region... and then perhaps this is precisely what the Muslim-Arab leadership hopes for...??
44. #42 Alex you have put it EXACTLY as it is.
Linda ,   Poltava, Ukraine   (11.20.10)
45. #11 Jason
Lazerbenabba ,   London, England   (11.20.10)
Your simplistic title does not due justice to the content of the talkback. Please be aware that being an Atheist does not automatically imply that one has the leftist agenda, very far from it; being an Atheist frees a person from the the extremes of religious fanaticsm both from the Islamists and unfortunately from also our own brethren. The frequently extreme brutal and fanatical control of all aspects of life in Israel by a minority of rabbis, whether it be marriage that does not quite fit their notion of Jewishness or the choice of how to live ones life is causing almost as much grief and antipathy to the Israeli state as the external enemies. To be democratic means definitely to be even stronger than a dictatorship both in the military arena but also in the eradication of intolerance which unfortunately is so prevalent amongst the haredi(with notable exceptions).
46. Reasons to be simple - #12 Marc
Harvey ,   London   (11.20.10)
Marc the reason why the Palestinian cannot listen to Bob Dylan is because it is subversive Western music and anyway Dylan is a Jew. As for white phosphorus ,that would be the exhaust trails of Kassims heading for Israel. If he got a job instead of relying on UN Hand Outs he could buy the IPOD himself . I agree with you regarding the Olive tree. Mind you he always has Uncle Salims Car Breaking business , the one that uses stolen Israeli cars for spare parts.
47. Peace?
Leon Rogson ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (11.20.10)
The story of Gaza shows that the proposed solution is also unfeasible. Gaza has not ceased to be a problem simply because we have withdrawn completely. why would we expect from the West bank to be different? We need to realize this is a generational problem, we need to wait for a generation that did not know Arafat. Until then we are for an eternal fight. Leon
48. The Israelis hate the Jews.
sk ,   USA   (11.20.10)
The elite stratum in Israel sees itself as Israeli first, not Jew first. A poster boy for this stratum is Yair Lapid, who is trying now to be at the top of the political dung heap. Yair et al. are terrified of the high Jewish birth rate, and thus target the "national religious" community. That is part of why the conflict between the Muslims and Israel continues to endure: the Muslim are useful to the Israeli elite as way of jettisoning the Biblically central parts of the Land. If Yair et al. had any love for Jews, he would have seen the handwriting on the wall and would have partitioned Eretz Israel into Medinat Israel and Medinat Yehuda, two states for two peoples: Israeli and Jewish.
49. The price of peace
i ,   jerusalem   (11.20.10)
The solution can be had, but it is not pretty. The Arabs must be flushed out and beaten so badly that they do not raise their heads for 1000 years. This is the "peace" that the west achieved in southern Europe, Yes, it involves dead civilians, refugees, population transfers, and other not-niceties, but with the poison that we face, that is the medicine. Some in the west will need to repeat the performance of reconquest, or succumb. The next 100 years will be the tipping point for big caliphate or none.
50. Sounding like Kahane
Zneg ,   Ramat Aviv Israel   (11.20.10)
In trying to be clever, or maybe arrogantly believing himself to be above it all, Yair states a simple fact that Kahane got banned for saying - THERE CAN BE NO PEACE WITH THE ARABS! Whatever we do, as long as even a small number of us are here, claiming our historical and legal rights to the land, they will work to do away with us There will not be peace - Not because Kahane and the rest of us don't wish for peace, but because of exactly the cultural and ideological reasons Lapid lists. Lapid should remember an old saying: "If you try to walk in the middle of the road you get run over from traffic in both directions."
51. This is the most deluded rubbish I've read
Smith ,   TA, Israel   (11.20.10)
This work is pure rubbish and has several glaring factual errors. I presume the editorial committee let them pass because they want Lapid to embarrass himself. For example, there are several democratic Muslim states and Israel is embroiled in a very public spat with one of them: Turkey. I mean, don't we regularly use lines like, "since Erdogan was elected Turkey sucks" and so on? I don't hear anyone saying, "since General Erdogan took over in a violent military coup".... Does Lapid think that a Palestinian state will get the world off our backs? Has he not heard of Timor-Leste or Kosovo? I guess he was too busy making sweeping generalizations about Muslims, Leftists, Rightists and admiring the sunshine shining out of his you know what to bother to check if anything he was writing was actually true. Mr. Lapid, if you run for office I'll join a political party and my job will be to fact check every letter or word that comes from your pen or mouth. The last thing Israel needs is a avant garde charlatan like you; we're doing just fine with our regular charlatans. Thank you.
52. OK but...Lapid fails to internalize the American peoples
Rightist ,   Israel   (11.20.10)
support for Israel. Were Israel to lay out in consistent stark terms the facts that: *Israel cant commit suicide at 8 miles wide, which is what leaving Judea&Samaria (aka west bank) entails. Therefore the palestinian state has to occur historically eastern palestine *78% of the palestine mandate lands is modern day Jordan *80% of Jordans population is palestinian *the rulers are a overwhelming minority- less than 1% of the population are hashemites *the rulers asre also non native british imports from mecca with zero historacity to the land they rule *the current prince of jordan is palestinian becuase his mother is. That meanS THE NEXT KING IN JORDAN WILL BE A PALESTINIAN. This is factual and logical and the majority of America will support Israel with this line of reasoning. Israel just needs to put it out there. Or perhaps Jews' need to put it out there and then the government will follow and take credit, as governments do. Revert Jordan to Palestine!
53. Nice Try
Rube Vogel ,   Jerusalem   (11.21.10)
Good start pointing out the basic problem that neither left nor right have a solution. However, thinking that the declaration of a Palestinian state (on the 67 borders!) will make things better for Israel is nonsense. If the UN recognized such a state, the settlers would become invaders and Israel would be under even more pressure to withdraw.
54. to 3
sana ,   jerusalem   (11.21.10)
the last 40 years ..hahaha of what ..of 62 years it is like my age .. i think till now i can not say that iam talking the real thing that it is true and it is in my heart .. yesterday he said ... if a man will live forever and does whatever he want so the man will be a god .. i believe it is one god who can manage the strugle and the man ... if it is not a religouse thought .. the struggle will manage evry one .you can not controle the struggle by the gun how it will be controled by talking ..
55. Lapid: Right and Wrong
Reuven Brauner ,   brauner1@actcom.net.   (11.21.10)
The first part of the article was right. The second part was wrong. The assumption that "two states" will solve some of the problems and make it easier for us to manage the Arabs is unworkable and false. All two states will do is create new, no-less-severe problems, it will not, in any way, lower Arab desire to throw us in the sea, and it will further box the Jews into a very small sliver of land with no room for growth and development.
56. Suicide is not the answer
Alex ,   Jerusalem   (11.21.10)
Mr. Lapid, like many others is tired. Tired of the conflict. Tired of the responsibility of caring for the holiest spots in Israel. And, the best thing to do for him, is merely cash out. Commit suicide, and get the 70 virgins we have all been waiting for. Well guess what. A PA State is not even as pretty as Lapid makes it sound, which is not that pretty. Also, Mr. Lapid goes on a diatribe labeling his opinions, as facts. Come on. It is really hard to take you seriously when you do that.
57. no.34
hebrew prophet ,   israel   (11.21.10)
Your points are very good Rob but you didn,t mention how to change the paradigm so come back with what you reckon is the way to go ,please ?
58. As I started liking to read Ynet......
Harry ,   Jerusalem   (11.21.10)
and even started telling friends, why I seem to open Ynet before JPost or even Arutz7.....until -back to the old issue the "TRUTH" All I have ever written in a TalkBack is the Open Truth, Ynet, at first, it would seem, could not handle, and refused to post my TalkBack. Someone on Staff at Ynet, reconsidered, and all my TalkBacks were printed, until Friday. The TRUTH about Yair Lapids article was to much for them. I will still try, to share the Naked TRUTH.
59. Dear Mr. Lapid, we are not neutral switzerland....
zabarbie ,   r   (11.21.10)
the right wing is the present threat, the end ot democracy and the state of israel/ The choice is not dreaming of peace under an olive tree or hitting palestinians. Its not enough "to face reality" but its 5 minutes to 12 , and the the time has come to decide wether to be a moral human being or not ...
60. Yair Lapid is on the right track
Clear Thinker ,   Haifa, Israel   (11.21.10)
Yair Lapid is moving in the correct direction. But an independent Palestinan state will tremendously elevate the level of war between us and the Palestinians, because most of them want sooner or later to destroy Israel, and with independence they will have more weapons to carry out their dream. Yair, read Bogie Ya'alon's book for more ideas on what to do in the absence of peace.
